VII.1.

TOWARD HALF A CENTURY OF PRESENCE AND FUTURE PROSPECTS (2024–2026)
VII.1. Half a Century of Presence in the United States:
From Community Memory to Historical Consciousness
The year 2026 marks fifty years of GĐPTVN’s presence in the United States. If 1976 is taken as the starting point of the process of organizational reestablishment following displacement, then this half-century represents more than a span of time measured by the calendar; it is also the journey through which a Buddhist educational tradition was transformed as it moved from its Vietnamese homeland into the social environment of the United States. Over these fifty years, many generations of Leaders and youth members have come of age; numerous local units have been established, developed, and subsequently entrusted to succeeding generations; and many upheavals have occurred both within Vietnamese Buddhist life and within Gia Đình Phật Tử itself. Nevertheless, the current of its educational ideal has remained continuous, sustaining one of the most enduring Vietnamese Buddhist lay communities overseas.
From another perspective, 2026 carries particular significance because it coincides with the 75th Anniversary of the GĐPTVN Name (1951–2026). These two milestones meet not merely along a chronological axis, but also within the deeper course of history. If 1951 marked the unification of the name and the establishment of a shared identity for the Gia Đình Phật Tử movement throughout Vietnam, then 1976 opened the process of rebuilding Áo Lam life under conditions of displacement. In this sense, 2026 becomes the point at which seventy-five years of tradition and fifty years of presence converge, where memories of the homeland meet a history that continues to be written on American soil.[152]
From a historiographical perspective, the greatest significance of the fifty-year milestone lies not in the number itself, but in the transformation of the organization’s understanding of its own history. During the first decades after 1975, historical documentation was undertaken primarily to preserve the memories of the founding generation and to prevent the loss of source materials. By the period of preparation for the 2026 Commemoration, that need had developed into a more explicit consciousness of preserving documentary heritage, systematizing organizational records, establishing archives, and writing history according to research-based methods. This reflects the maturation of an organization that has not only made history, but has also begun to recognize its responsibility to preserve and interpret its own history.
This transformation carries long-term significance for GĐPTVN in the United States. An organization truly enters a stage of maturity when its memory no longer depends entirely upon those who personally experienced its history, but is transformed into sources, documents, and scholarly works that can be transmitted to succeeding generations. The writing of history, digitization of documents, organization of exhibitions, compilation of commemorative volumes, and preservation of photographs serve the needs of an anniversary while also contributing to the formation of collective memory.[153]
Seen at this deeper level, the 2026 Commemoration is both an occasion to remember the past and a moment for the organization to review the full course of its journey, identifying the values that must continue to be preserved and the responsibilities that must be transmitted to the future. In precisely this sense, half a century of presence in the United States becomes a milestone of historical consciousness rather than merely a marker of time.
VII.2. The 2026 Commemoration and the Formation of Heritage Consciousness
In preparing for the 2026 milestone, the Guidance Committee of GĐPTVN in the United States planned the Commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the GĐPTVN Name (1951–2026) and the 50th Anniversary of GĐPTVN in the United States (1976–2026) as an event whose significance extends beyond that of a conventional anniversary observance. The Commemoration was situated within the organization’s broader historical continuum, both to honor the generations that contributed to building Gia Đình Phật Tử and to create an opportunity to reassess its achievements, limitations, and the questions confronting its future.
The decision to bring the two milestones of 1951 and 1976 together within a single Commemoration reflects an awareness of historical continuity. The year 1951 is associated with the unification of the name Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam, marking an important stage in the organization’s formation in its homeland; 1976 is adopted as a conventional marker for the process of reestablishing and developing GĐPTVN in the United States following the events of 1975. Placing these two dates alongside one another indicates that the history of GĐPTVN in the United States is not understood as a separate history, but as the continuation of a tradition formed in Vietnam and recreated under new historical circumstances.
As part of preparations for the Commemoration, numerous activities were proposed to serve two purposes simultaneously: commemoration and historical preservation. Programs involving photographic exhibitions, documentary collection, commemorative-volume compilation, documentary filmmaking, digitization of records, and the development of archival repositories demonstrate that the purpose of the Commemoration is not limited to staging a large-scale event, but also extends to creating a body of sources capable of supporting future research and education.[154]
Here, the concept of heritage must be understood in a broad sense. The heritage of GĐPTVN is not limited to documents, photographs, insignia, songs, or artifacts preserved across generations. More importantly, it encompasses a system of educational values, a tradition of Buddhist study and leadership training, a spirit of service, and a community memory transmitted from one generation of Leaders to the next. These tangible and intangible elements combine to constitute the identity of the organization.
From this perspective, historical preservation cannot end with the collection of source materials. Sources truly become heritage only when they are organized, interpreted, and situated in relation to contemporary life. The study of earlier documents serves not only to verify facts, but also to help the present generation better understand how the values it has inherited came into being. A photograph from a training camp, the minutes of a Congress, a Leader’s letter, or an earlier version of the Internal Regulations may all become historical evidence when placed within their proper contexts.
It is from this need that the 2026 Commemoration may also be understood as marking a transition from community memory to heritage consciousness. If memory is preserved primarily through the recollections of those who lived through history, heritage consciousness requires a further step: the recognition that those memories must be preserved, verified, systematized, and transmitted to those who did not directly experience that period. This is an important transition for an organization that has now passed through multiple generations.
The significance of the Commemoration, therefore, does not lie in the scale of its ceremonies or the number of participants. Its more enduring value lies in the possibility of transforming an anniversary into an opportunity for historical self-understanding. When a community is able to look back upon its past with gratitude while also approaching it through critical historical inquiry, it begins to move beyond merely remembering history toward actively preserving and interpreting it.
In this sense, the 2026 milestone does not close a journey. Rather, it raises questions for the next stage: what from the past fifty years should continue to be preserved, what needs to be adjusted, and which generation will assume responsibility for carrying this tradition into the next half-century? This question moves history from the realm of commemoration into that of responsibility, while opening the way to the central issue of the next stage: generational transition and the future prospects of GĐPTVN in the United States.
VII.3. Looking Back on Half a Century:
Tradition and Responsibility for the Future
Half a century of GĐPTVN’s presence in the United States is the result of organizational perseverance and the dedication of many generations of Leaders. Those who laid the foundations in the early years after 1975 had largely come from the GĐPT environment in Vietnam, bringing with them organizational experience, traditions of Buddhist study, and memories of a movement that had already matured before the historical upheaval. The succeeding generation grew up under conditions of resettlement, inheriting that legacy while learning to adapt to life in the United States. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, yet another generation had emerged: Leaders and youth members raised entirely within American society, using English as their primary language and approaching Buddhism and Vietnamese culture from a position different from that of their predecessors.
This transition places GĐPTVN in the United States before one of the most important challenges of its future: how can an educational tradition formed within a Vietnamese cultural environment remain vital among generations growing to adulthood within American society? This is not merely a question of language. Behind language lie changes in lived experience, modes of learning, family relationships, school environments, conceptions of community, and the ways in which each generation constructs its identity.
Looking back over the history since 1975, each period presented a different kind of challenge. The first generation had to reestablish the organization under conditions of displacement; succeeding generations had to develop organizational structures, expand local units, and adapt to a new society; by the opening decades of the twenty-first century, GĐPTVN had to confront generational transition, linguistic change, communications technology, and profound transformations in the educational environment. This history demonstrates that adaptation has never stood outside tradition; rather, the capacity to adapt has repeatedly enabled the tradition to endure.
Yet adaptation has meaning only when the organization clearly recognizes what cannot be lost. For GĐPTVN, this begins with its purpose of educating authentic Buddhists, its foundation in Buddhist study and practice, the ideal of Compassion – Wisdom – Courage, the spirit of voluntary service, and the relationship between the individual and the Áo Lam community. Methods of activity may change, the language of transmission may change, and technology may become a new means of communication, but if these core values are no longer transmitted, continuity of name alone will not be sufficient to ensure continuity of tradition.
It is here that generational transition extends beyond the question of personnel. An organization does not truly achieve succession merely by replacing those who hold office. At a deeper level, succession means transmitting the capacity to assume responsibility, memory, experience, a sense of duty, and the agency to shape the future. The preceding generation bears the responsibility of passing on what it has accumulated, but it must also create space for the next generation to learn, experiment, assume responsibility, and develop its own voice within the framework of the organization’s fundamental values.
Accordingly, the responsibility of the present generation is not merely to maintain activities or expand the organization. More importantly, it must ensure that those who follow understand why the organization exists, which values have enabled it to traverse half a century, and why those values remain worthy of preservation. If the succeeding generation inherits only outward forms without understanding the depth of the tradition, that inheritance will remain fragile. Conversely, if tradition is transmitted as a living heritage, younger generations may find within it the resources to create forms of activity appropriate to their own time.
In this dimension, history is no longer a field reserved only for those who study the past. History becomes an element of education. When a young Leader understands why earlier generations built local units under difficult circumstances, why programs of Buddhist study and leadership training were developed, and why certain organizational principles have been preserved across decades, that Leader gains not only greater knowledge of the past but also a clearer understanding of responsibility in the present.
History is also preserved through very ordinary practices: every activity that begins on time, every Buddhist study program prepared with care, every training camp conducted in accordance with its proper spirit, and every occasion on which a Leader patiently guides a young member. It is precisely through such seemingly ordinary activities that tradition is recreated from week to week and from generation to generation. If documents are where history is recorded, the life of the local unit is where history continues to be made.
In this context, the future prospects of GĐPTVN in the United States cannot be measured solely by the number of local units or youth members. Such figures are necessary for understanding the scale and vitality of the organization, but they are insufficient for assessing the depth of its continuity. A more important indicator is the ability to educate generations of Leaders who both understand tradition and possess the capacity to engage contemporary society; who have a foundation in Buddhist studies while understanding the educational environment of young people in the United States; who value the Vietnamese language and Vietnamese culture while also being able to use the language and media of their own generation to transmit those values.
This requires Buddhist study and leadership training to remain the central axis of the organization. After fifty years, the primary challenge is no longer to establish a presence, but to ensure the quality of that presence. An organization may endure in name while weakening in substance if the education of human beings is no longer placed at its center. Conversely, when a new generation of Leaders is adequately prepared in Buddhist studies, educational methods, organizational competence, and the spirit of service, the organization retains the capacity to renew itself without losing its identity.
After half a century of presence, GĐPTVN in the United States has also become part of the history of the Vietnamese community in America. The organization’s story, therefore, is no longer merely the story of the development of a Buddhist youth organization. Across generations, Gia Đình Phật Tử has helped create spaces in which Vietnamese youth can encounter Buddhism, learn Vietnamese, preserve culture, cultivate communal bonds, and develop a sense of service. In this respect, Gia Đình Phật Tử not only educates Leaders and youth members but also contributes to sustaining a heritage of cultural and religious memory within the overseas Vietnamese community.
Situated within the broader history of Vietnamese Buddhism in the United States, the presence of GĐPTVN also reveals a distinctive means by which Buddhist tradition is transmitted from the immigrant generation to generations born and raised in the United States. Buddhist temples and monasteries, the Sangha, and lay organizations all participate in this process in different ways; Gia Đình Phật Tử occupies a distinctive place because young people are the direct focus of its educational mission. It is precisely where younger generations encounter the Dharma, culture, and communal life that the capacity of Vietnamese Buddhism to continue in the United States is tested most concretely.
From this perspective, 2026 marks not only the completion of a historical journey but also the beginning of a new cycle of responsibility. The earliest generations completed much of the work of laying the foundations; succeeding generations built organizational structures and expanded activities; the present generation now bears the responsibility of transforming a heritage preserved through memory into a tradition capable of sustaining itself into the future.
That future will depend upon GĐPTVN in the United States maintaining a balance between inheritance and creativity, tradition and adaptation, Vietnamese identity and American reality, the memories of earlier generations and the lived experience of those who follow. These paired concepts need not be understood as mutually exclusive opposites. The history of the past fifty years shows that it is precisely through the capacity to reconcile such differences that Áo Lam life has repeatedly found a way forward.
The first half-century may therefore be understood as a period of foundation-building and formation. The next half-century will test the capacity for generational succession. If that succession succeeds, the legacy of earlier generations will not merely be preserved in commemorative volumes, photographs, or anniversary observances, but will continue to live in the thought, action, and responsibility of generations not yet born when much of the history recounted in this study took place.
HISTORIOGRAPHICAL ASSESSMENT
Viewed from the milestone of 2026, the history of GĐPTVN in the United States may be understood as a process of transition from the memory of displacement to the historical consciousness of an established community. In the early years after 1975, the memory of Gia Đình Phật Tử was carried largely by Leaders who had participated in the organization in Vietnam. It was a form of living memory, bound to individuals, experience, and direct human relationships. After fifty years, as that generation gradually transfers responsibility to those born or raised in the United States, history can no longer be preserved through recollection alone. For memory to become heritage, it must be transformed into sources; for sources to become history, they must be verified, contextualized, and interpreted through method.
This transition also places an important demand upon the writing of the history of GĐPTVN in the United States. If one relies solely upon documents produced by governing structures, history can easily become a succession of Congresses, terms of office, decisions, and lists of personnel. Such sources are indispensable for establishing chronology, organizational structures, and institutional change, but they are insufficient to reflect the full life of an educational institution that has endured across generations. The history of GĐPTVN lies not merely in what the organization decided, but also in what the Áo Lam community actually lived, practiced, cultivated, and transmitted.
From this emerges a necessary distinction between the history of the institution and the history of the community of practice. The first dimension enables us to identify the formation of organizational structures and authority, the Internal Regulations and Bylaws, the rank system, National Congresses, and changes in institutional relationships. The second directs attention to the life of local units, programs of Buddhist study and leadership training, camps, rituals, collective memory, educational methods, and intergenerational relationships. These two dimensions are not separate, yet neither can substitute for the other. Institutional structures tell us how an organization is governed; lived practice tells us why that organization has been able to endure over time.
This approach is especially necessary for a history marked by as many upheavals as that of GĐPTVN in the United States. Over fifty years, organizational structures changed repeatedly; relationships with Buddhist institutions likewise passed through different phases; and after 2008, the branching of governing systems made the historical landscape both more visible and more complex. Yet if attention is confined to those upheavals, the historian may overlook another, more enduring layer of history: the continuity of educational activities, the system of Buddhist study and leadership training, Áo Lam memory, and the intergenerational transmission of responsibility. The coexistence of change and continuity is itself one of the most important characteristics of this historical process.
This also demonstrates that the concept of “continuity” must be used with care. Continuity does not mean that every structure, mode of activity, or organizational relationship remains unchanged. A tradition may alter its outward forms while retaining its fundamental elements; conversely, a form may be preserved even while its inner substance has changed considerably. Thus, when examining the continuity of GĐPTVN, the historiographical question is not simply whether the organization continues to exist, but must go further: what has continued, what has changed, and through what mechanisms has an educational tradition been transmitted from one generation to another?
From this perspective, the 2026 milestone carries particular significance. It is sufficiently distant from many events of the earlier decades to permit a measure of historical perspective, yet still close enough for many direct witnesses to provide memories, documents, and corroboration. This intersection creates an important opportunity for historical documentation: to collect memories before they disappear, while at the same time subjecting those memories to verification against documentary records and other independent sources. Oral history therefore has particular value, but it realizes its full significance only when carefully compared with records, photographs, correspondence, minutes, newspapers, and other contemporary evidence.
A rigorous historical study must examine archival materials, organizational documents, memoirs, newspapers and periodicals, photographs, correspondence, minutes, and oral sources together. Each type of source has its own possibilities and limitations. Administrative documents often establish dates and decisions with relative clarity but may reflect the perspective of the issuing body; memoirs provide lived experience but are shaped by individual memory; photographs may confirm the presence of people and events but require contextual identification; oral sources may fill gaps left by written records but must be carefully corroborated. Historiography does not discard memory; it places memory within a framework of verification.
In the case of GĐPTVN in the United States, this requirement is especially important because many sources remain dispersed among private collections, local-unit records, camp commemorative publications, the homes of Leaders, and websites established at different historical moments. The development of an organized archival system, therefore, is more than an act of preservation. It creates the conditions under which future history may be written upon a broader, more multivocal, and more verifiable evidentiary foundation.
This methodology also requires the historian to distinguish among fact, memory, and interpretation. A date recorded in official minutes, a witness’s recollection, and an assessment of an event’s significance do not possess the same evidentiary status. They may support one another, but they should not be conflated. Particularly for recent periods and events that have generated controversy, distinguishing these three levels helps prevent the language of historical participants from becoming, without examination, the conclusion of the historian. Respecting multiple voices does not mean treating every interpretation as possessing equal evidentiary force; methodological neutrality does not mean relinquishing the responsibility to establish facts.
From the half-century examined in this study, another characteristic may also be discerned: GĐPTVN in the United States is at once a Buddhist organization, an educational community, and a space for preserving and recreating the cultural memory of overseas Vietnamese. These three dimensions intersect without being entirely identical. Their intersection explains why the history of GĐPTVN cannot be confined to the organization’s internal history, but must also be studied within the history of Vietnamese Buddhism in the United States, the history of the Vietnamese community after 1975, and the transformation of identity across immigrant generations.
The fifty-year milestone, therefore, need not provide a final conclusion concerning GĐPTVN in the United States. Its value lies in providing a historical vantage point from which one may look back upon post-displacement reestablishment, institutional formation, periods of maturation and coordination, organizational upheavals, the continuity of educational life, and finally the question of generational transition. These periods do not exist as isolated segments of history; they succeed and shape one another, producing a process in which the achievements of one period become both the conditions and, at times, the problems that the succeeding period must address.
Accordingly, concluding this study at the year 2026 should not be understood as marking the end of the history itself. It is merely the chronological boundary of a study undertaken while that history continues to unfold. Many sources have yet to be fully examined; many witnesses have yet to be interviewed; and the transformations of the second, third, and subsequent generations will require greater temporal distance before they can be adequately assessed. Every historical study remains open to newly discovered sources and to new questions that later generations bring to the past.
In this sense, the value of a historical study lies not in rendering a final verdict, but in its capacity to establish verifiable facts, identify the limitations of its sources, distinguish events from interpretation, and open sufficiently precise questions for subsequent research. For GĐPTVN in the United States, this work carries an additional significance: it enables the memories of earlier generations to move beyond reminiscence and become a source of understanding for those who now live—and those who will continue to live—within this tradition.
Viewed from 2026, half a century of GĐPTVN’s presence in the United States is therefore both an object of history and a historical process not yet complete. What has passed must be recorded with integrity; what is still unfolding must be observed with caution; and what belongs to the future must remain open to the generations that will continue to write their own part of this history.
CONCLUSION
Half a century of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association’s presence in the United States has been a journey shaped by circumstances that the generation who first laid its foundations could scarcely have envisioned in full. From the displacement that followed 1975, the first local units were reestablished within an unfamiliar society; from modest beginnings among newly resettled Vietnamese communities, an organizational system gradually took shape, expanded, and matured. Over the course of fifty years, GĐPTVN in the United States has passed through distinct historical phases: reestablishment, institutionalization, maturation, coordination, upheaval, branching, and continuity. Each period left its own achievements, limitations, and unresolved questions, yet together they form a continuous historical process.
Looking back upon that process, what deserves recognition is not the image of an untroubled history. On the contrary, GĐPTVN in the United States has undergone changes in its social environment, organizational structures, relationships with Buddhist institutions, language, generations, and educational methods. There were periods of strong structural development; periods marked by disagreement and branching; and other, quieter transformations taking place within individual families, local units, and generations of youth members. It is precisely the capacity to continue under changing circumstances that gives historical significance to this half-century of presence.
That continuity was created first and foremost by people. Behind the Congresses, resolutions, Internal Regulations and Leaders’ Regulations, Guidance Committees, and training programs stand generations of Leaders who devoted a substantial part of their lives to Gia Đình Phật Tử. Some carried the tradition with them from Vietnam; some came of age during the early years of resettlement; others were born in the United States and received Áo Lam as part of an inherited identity. They did not live under the same historical circumstances, yet they met in a common responsibility: to transmit to the next generation what they themselves had received, while enabling that inheritance to remain alive under new circumstances.
For this reason, the history of GĐPTVN in the United States cannot be read solely as the history of an organizational structure. Structure is necessary for an organization to exist, but it is educational life that gives that existence meaning. A local unit that continues to gather, a Dharma class that remains open, a training camp that is organized, a new generation of Leaders that matures, a young child putting on the Grey Shirt for the first time—these seemingly ordinary moments are precisely where history continues to unfold beyond documents and chronologies. If institutions give the organization its form, education and human beings give it life.
This also helps explain a defining characteristic of these fifty years: tradition does not endure through immutability. From the moment it was reestablished in the United States, GĐPTVN had to adapt. It had to function within a different legal system, in a multicultural society, across a vast geographical territory, and within an immigrant community undergoing continual change. Over time, the language of youth members changed, family environments changed, technology changed, and the ways young people approached Buddhism also changed. If GĐPTVN continues to be present, it is because the tradition has repeatedly found ways to pass through those transformations without entirely losing the foundations that constitute its identity.
From this point, the important question for the future is no longer simply how much longer GĐPTVN in the United States can survive. The deeper question is: what will continue under that name? If only the name, symbols, and ceremonies remain while the educational purpose fades, continuity will be largely formal. Conversely, if the Buddhist foundation, the ideal of Compassion – Wisdom – Courage, the spirit of voluntary service, the tradition of Buddhist study and leadership training, and the responsibility to educate younger generations continue through methods appropriate to the times, then the tradition will retain the capacity to renew itself without losing its roots.
The milestone of the 75th Anniversary of the GĐPTVN Name and the 50th Anniversary of GĐPTVN in the United States therefore carries significance beyond that of a commemorative occasion. It places the present generation before an inheritance created through the efforts of many generations, while also imposing the responsibility of deciding how that inheritance will be passed on. Commemoration acquires its fullest meaning only when memory becomes understanding, understanding becomes responsibility, and responsibility is transformed into action for the future.
This study has been undertaken with the awareness that the history of GĐPTVN in the United States still contains many gaps requiring further investigation. Important sources may remain in private collections, local-unit records, and the unrecorded memories of witnesses; some events remain too recent to be assessed with sufficient historical distance. Sources discovered in the future may supplement, revise, or further illuminate some of the interpretations presented in this study. The author’s hope is to contribute toward laying a foundation for the study of GĐPTVN history in the United States on the basis of historical evidence, scholarly comparison, and respect for the multiple voices that belong to the same historical process.
If this work can help the present generation better understand the path traveled by those who came before, recognize the values that enabled the organization to endure periods of upheaval, and at the same time perceive the limitations and unresolved questions that remain, then the study of the past will have acquired meaning for the present. History is not written to keep people bound to the past; history is written so that those still traveling may know where they have come from and more clearly understand their responsibility toward the road ahead.
The year 2026, therefore, is not where the journey ends. Fifty years are merely a span long enough to look back and recognize the footprints of many generations that have passed this way. Some of those who opened the road are no longer with us; those who continue it today will, in time, also hand over their responsibilities. What endures is not the name of a particular term of office or generation, but the capacity for that educational ideal to continue being received by those who come after.
If 1976 was the moment when one generation carried Gia Đình Phật Tử within the baggage of displacement and rebuilt it in a new homeland, then 2026 is the moment when those who inherited that journey may look back and understand that they stand upon a path built through half a century of effort, sacrifice, and service. Behind us lies the heritage. Before us lies the responsibility.
And the history of GĐPTVN in the United States, at this point, has still not come to a close.
In truth, this is only a moment of stillness within a current that continues to flow—a current passed from the hands that built Gia Đình in the early days of displacement, to the hands preserving it today, and onward into the generations of Áo Lam members yet to come.
Homage to the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Forest of Merit.

[152] The Commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the GĐPTVN Name (1951–2026) and the 50th Anniversary of GĐPTVN in the United States (1976–2026) was identified by the Guidance Committee of GĐPTVN in the United States as a historical event of both retrospective and forward-looking significance. Documents prepared for the Commemoration consistently emphasize the continuity between the tradition formally established in 1951 and the development of GĐPTVN in the United States beginning in 1976.
[153] On the concept of collective memory, see Maurice Halbwachs, On Collective Memory (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1992). In this study, the concept is employed to explain the process by which the memory of a community is transformed into an organized body of sources and historical consciousness; it is not intended to equate Gia Đình Phật Tử with the specific social formations examined by Halbwachs.
[154] Planning documents for the Commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the GĐPTVN Name (1951–2026) and the 50th Anniversary of GĐPTVN in the United States (1976–2026) identify a range of programs related to the collection, preservation, and presentation of historical materials, including photographic exhibitions, commemorative-volume compilation, documentary and media projects, and the systematization of sources concerning the formation and development of GĐPTVN in the United States. These activities are treated in this study as evidence that the commemorative undertaking has become associated with an emerging consciousness of heritage preservation and the development of historical resources for succeeding generations.
