Lễ Khai khóa Liên trại Huấn luyện Huynh trưởng
Lộc Uyển VII – A Dục V,
A Dục nhận lấy trách nhiệm.

From Eastern and Western Canada,
a Living Stream of Training Continues
Opening Ceremony of the Joint Huynh trưởng Training Camps
Lộc Uyển VII – A Dục V, September 12, 2026
On September 12, 2026, at the eastern and western ends of Canada, the Opening Ceremony of the Joint Huynh trưởng Training Camps Lộc Uyển VII – A Dục V was held concurrently at Trúc Lâm Temple in the West and Hương Hải Meditation Temple in the East. Across a country marked by immense geographical distances, two practice centers, two regions of activity, and two communities of Huynh trưởng entered the same training program, creating an image of particular significance: physical distance may separate one place from another, yet the educational orientation and living current of transmission continue to return to a common source.
Viewed merely as an item on a schedule, the event marks only the beginning of a training program. Within the tradition of Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam, however, the meaning of opening a training course reaches considerably deeper than the inauguration of a program of study. When a training course begins, the Huynh trưởng also crosses another threshold of responsibility: from participation to understanding, from enthusiasm to method, and from the goodwill of service to the capacity to assume a concrete share of responsibility within the educational structure of the organization.
Lộc Uyển stands at the beginning of that path. Its name recalls the Deer Park, where the Wheel of Dharma was first set in motion. Within the Huynh trưởng training system of Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam, Lộc Uyển provides foundational training, preparing a young Buddhist to enter the life of a Huynh trưởng through essential knowledge and practical capacities: the character and responsibilities of a Huynh trưởng, child and adolescent psychology, applied Buddhist teachings, the history and organization of GĐPT, the Internal Rules and Regulations, methods of conducting activities, and responsibilities within a Đoàn. Traditional training materials identify this as the first step taken by one who voluntarily accepts the responsibility of guiding younger members.
If Lộc Uyển lays the first stones on the path of becoming a Huynh trưởng, A Dục requires a further stage of maturity. Its stated purpose is to prepare Đoàn Leaders, those who directly assume responsibility for one of the fundamental educational units of GĐPT. Before entering A Dục, a Huynh trưởng must already have spent time living, learning, and putting responsibility into practice after Lộc Uyển; that experience then becomes the ground for further study of ideals, educational methods, administration, and leadership responsibilities. The passage from Lộc Uyển to A Dục, therefore, is not an advancement in title or status. It is an enlargement of responsibility.
Seen in this light, a training camp should not be understood simply as a period of concentrated study in which certain lessons are completed and a certificate of successful completion is eventually received. Training in GĐPT is, in its essential nature, a process of educating and forming the human person. Knowledge is necessary; skills are necessary; methods of leadership and administration are likewise necessary. Yet ultimately, what is placed under examination is the Huynh trưởng himself or herself: how deeply one understands the ideal; to what extent one lives what one teaches the younger generation; whether one has sufficient patience to educate, sufficient humility to learn, sufficient discipline for self-regulation, and sufficient compassion to take the more difficult share upon oneself.
The traditional spirit of the A Dục camp describes the purpose of training through three elements: to temper the will, cultivate the spirit, and strengthen capacity. These three dimensions remain fully relevant today. Capacity without spiritual grounding may easily be reduced to administrative technique. Enthusiasm without method may soon be exhausted. Discipline without compassion may become rigid. Compassion without principle may find it difficult to sustain a sound and enduring educational environment. Training is precisely the place where such seemingly opposing qualities are learned, harmonized, and embodied in the life of a Buddhist Huynh trưởng.
This becomes even more worthy of reflection in the overseas setting. Distances between units are greater; professional and family responsibilities exert stronger demands; younger generations grow up in diverse cultural and linguistic environments; and means of communication change almost from day to day. The Huynh trưởng of today therefore cannot merely reproduce, unchanged, every method inherited from yesterday. Yet innovation in means does not require the weakening of foundations. It is precisely during periods of rapid transition that the distinction between ends and means, between what must be preserved and what must be opened anew, becomes all the more important and deserving of careful attention.
The two opening sites in eastern and western Canada thus carry a meaningful symbolic significance. Geographical distance need not become distance from tradition. An educational organization endures not because everyone is always gathered in the same room, but because, even while standing in different places, we remain aware that we are walking the same path, learning within the same educational tradition, bearing responsibility before the same ideal, and looking toward the generations that follow.
From this perspective, Lộc Uyển VII – A Dục V is also a meeting across generations. Those serving today on the Camp Management Board and the Instructional Team were once trainees in earlier Lộc Uyển and A Dục camps. The trainees sitting in class today will one day return to their Đoàn and their local units, stand before younger members, and pass on what they themselves have received. This is how transmission within GĐPT has always taken place: seldom through dramatic events, but through each weekly activity, each hour of instruction, each camp raised and taken down, each small responsibility carried out properly, and each generation quietly preparing the way for the next.
For that reason, the value of a training course cannot ultimately be measured by the number of lectures delivered or the number of days spent at a training ground. Its deeper measure will reveal itself after everyone has returned home: whether a Huynh trưởng has become steadier in the face of difficulty; whether one has learned to listen more carefully to the younger members; whether one understands the organization deeply enough not to substitute personal preference for common principles; whether one can honor the experience of those who came before while remaining sufficiently awake to the new demands of the age; and, most importantly, whether the Grey shirt one wears has become a continuing reminder of personal responsibility.
Throughout the history of Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam, training has remained an essential part of preparing those who will carry the work forward. Training outlines concerning the responsibilities of the Huynh trưởng emphasize that Lộc Uyển and A Dục must help trainees understand the organization’s direction, personal character, duties, discipline, and ethical foundations so that they may be capable of guiding younger members and strengthening their units. Here, the meaning of the term Huynh trưởng returns to its original depth: an elder brother or elder sister who has walked a little farther ahead—not in order to stand above others, but to know the path well enough to guide those who follow.
The Opening Ceremony of September 12, 2026 will eventually pass into the record as one milestone in the calendar of activities. Photographs will become archival materials. Chairs in the ceremonial hall will be put away. Name tags worn by the trainees will likewise be stored. Yet what deserves to remain is a quieter movement: from that day forward, another group of Huynh trưởng has begun to walk a little farther along the path of self-study, self-training, and personal accountability to the aspiration they have chosen to uphold.
From Trúc Lâm Temple in the West to Hương Hải Meditation Temple in the East, the Canadian sky remains vast. Yet between those two horizons, on September 12, a thread of Lam was joined once again through study and training.
Lộc Uyển opens the path.
A Dục assumes responsibility.
The Huynh trưởng continues onward.
And at the far end of that path, there remain the younger generations.
Within this broader meaning, Lộc Uyển VII – A Dục V in Canada also calls attention to a precious reality of Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam overseas: each unit and each Guiding Board may carry out its work under different geographical and social conditions, yet all remain interrelated parts of one living current of education and service. For Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam in the United States in particular, the diligent effort of the Lam community in Canada is not something external to us; it is a shared joy among those who wear the same Grey shirt, inherit the same legacy, and carry the same concern for the continuity of generations yet to come.
On the occasion of this opening ceremony, we respectfully extend our heartfelt wishes to the Guiding Board of Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam in Canada, the Camp Management Board of the Joint Lộc Uyển VII – A Dục V Training Camps, and all camp trainees. May you remain steadfast in your Buddhist aspiration, resolute in study and practice, and diligent throughout the path of training. From the steps being taken today, may a new generation of Huynh trưởng continue to mature in discipline, Tình Lam, and responsibility—so that, whether separated by a national border or an ocean, these lamps may continue to illuminate one and the same path.
