I Love the Grey — In Remembrance and Continuation
As the death anniversary of the late Venerable Thích Hạnh Tuấn—the inaugural Director General of the Department of Youth Affairs of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam in the United States—approaches, we reverently offer our teacher a new arrangement of “I Love the Grey,” composed by Trần Nhật Thành. In loving remembrance, we return to a song inseparable from his affection for the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association (GĐPT), seeking, within its familiar melody, a deeper understanding of a life devoted to companionship, guidance, and the passing on of a cherished tradition.
In a personal reflection written years ago, our teacher spoke of the grey blending with the red of his heart to become the brown robe he wore. That heartfelt image carries a profound meaning: what nourishes us in childhood can remain a sustaining presence throughout a lifetime of spiritual commitment. The grey of his youth became part of his monastic brown through love, memory, and responsibility toward generations to come. Thus, whenever he sang “I Love the Grey,” the song seemed to become a personal testament to a love he had lived, sustained, and entrusted to others.
Returning to this song in remembrance, we recognize more deeply the educational significance of GĐPT’s musical heritage. Through lyrics and melody, the values of love, harmony, respect, and service entered our childhoods, quietly shaping how generations learned to feel and think. The devotion of the pioneering musicians of our Grey Shirt community continues to resonate in daily life: in voices raised together, in memories of a youth camp, in moments of farewell, and whenever we need to rediscover the ideals that first brought us together.
This new arrangement marks the beginning of a project we have cherished for many years: to preserve and renew the musical expression of GĐPT Vietnam’s heritage, with respect for the original works and thoughtful attention to the sensibilities of today’s listeners. Such work calls for careful study, restraint, and humility. Every choice of rhythm, timbre, or melodic development must be considered in relation to the spirit of the composition, so that a fresh interpretation may open another path into the music, helping young people find something of themselves in the songs that sustained earlier generations.
In reverent remembrance of our teacher, we offer this arrangement with gratitude and as a reminder of our responsibility to carry that inheritance forward. May those who grew up within GĐPT hear, once again, the warmth of fellowship in this song; may those just arriving discover a spiritual home whose doors are open to them. And through this meeting of generations, may our teacher’s love for his children in grey continue to be nurtured through the modest, steadfast efforts of the Grey Shirt generations of today and tomorrow.
