Sen Trắng: 50 năm GĐPT Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ, nhìn về quê hương và Giáo hội

Năm mươi năm, khoảng thời gian đủ để một thế hệ trở thành lịch sử, ký ức trở thành di sản và một cuộc ra đi không chỉ được hiểu thuần túy là địa lý. Đối với Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ, nửa thế kỷ hiện diện trên quê hương thứ hai là một thành tựu đáng trân trọng. Từ những gia đình Việt Nam đầu tiên mang theo hành trang tị nạn sau biến cố 1975, những đơn vị áo Lam dần được dựng lại nơi những ngôi chùa Việt. Từ vài đơn vị khiêm tốn giữa một cộng đồng còn bỡ ngỡ nơi đất khách, một hình thái sinh hoạt giáo dục thanh thiếu niên Phật tử đã được tiếp nối trải nhiều tiểu bang, với những khóa tu học, trại huấn luyện, những thế hệ Huynh trưởng và Đoàn sinh trưởng thành giữa hai nền văn hóa. Nhưng nếu kỷ niệm năm mươi năm chỉ để nhìn lại những gì đã xây dựng được trên đất Mỹ, có lẽ chúng ta mới nhìn thấy một nửa hành trình. Nửa còn lại nằm bên kia Thái Bình Dương. Đó là quê hương và sâu xa hơn quê hương như một địa vực, đó là Giáo hội, là Tăng-già, là những thế hệ áo Lam vẫn tiếp tục con đường giáo dục tuổi trẻ trong nước; là một lịch sử Phật giáo Việt Nam mà dù trải qua bao nhiêu phân ly, danh xưng, cơ chế và hoàn cảnh chính trị, chúng ta vẫn không thể tự cắt mình ra khỏi đó mà không đồng thời đánh mất một phần căn tính của chính mình. Người lưu vong có thể xây dựng một quê hương thứ hai, nhưng một truyền thống không thể có hai nguồn cội.

Biến cố 1975 đã tạo nên một cuộc phân tán chưa từng có trong lịch sử hiện đại của người Việt. Cùng với những đoàn người rời quê hương, Phật giáo Việt Nam cũng bước vào một hoàn cảnh mới. Chùa Việt xuất hiện tại Hoa Kỳ, Canada, Úc, châu Âu. Tăng Ni và cư sĩ mang theo những truyền thống tu học. Gia Đình Phật Tử theo những gia đình Việt Nam bước vào đời sống lưu vong. Vì thế, lịch sử GĐPTVN tại Hoa Kỳ vốn là một lịch sử đặc thù. Như là một nhánh cây được mang đi từ một thân cây lớn hơn, nhưng gốc rễ đã được vun trồng từ phong trào chấn hưng Phật giáo đầu thế kỷ XX, từ những thao thức giáo dục thanh thiếu niên của cư sĩ Tâm Minh Lê Đình Thám và những tiền nhân cùng thế hệ, từ Gia Đình Phật Hóa Phổ, rồi từ cuộc vận động thống nhất dẫn đến danh xưng Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam năm 1951. Thấy như thế, năm mươi năm tại Hoa Kỳ không phải năm mươi năm của một tổ chức được sinh ra trên đất Mỹ mà là năm mươi năm của một nhánh cây sống xa gốc. Và chính nơi đây xuất hiện câu hỏi quan trọng nhất của một đại lễ kỷ niệm: sau năm mươi năm, khoảng cách giữa cành và gốc đã gần hơn hay xa hơn?

Khoảng cách địa lý ngày nay gần như đã bị công nghệ xóa bỏ. Một buổi lễ ở California có thể được nhìn thấy tức thời tại Huế, Đà Nẵng hay Sài Gòn. Một lớp học có thể nối những Huynh trưởng ở nhiều châu lục. Một kho kinh sách, tài liệu huấn luyện hay lịch sử tổ chức có thể được chia sẻ trong vài giây. Nhưng nghịch lý của thời đại là khoảng cách truyền thông càng ngắn, khoảng cách tâm thức đôi khi càng dài. Chúng ta biết nhiều hơn về nhau nhưng chưa chắc hiểu nhau hơn; nhìn thấy nhau thường xuyên hơn nhưng chưa chắc đã đến gần nhau hơn. Năm mươi năm, vì thế, không những đặt ra câu hỏi chúng ta đã đi được bao xa mà còn buộc chúng ta tự hỏi mình đã mang theo điều gì, đánh mất điều gì và còn nhận ra con đường trở về hay không.

Khi nói đến Giáo Hội Phật Giáo Việt Nam Thống Nhất, điều trước hết cần nhận thức là Giáo hội không nên được hiểu thuần túy như một danh xưng hành chánh hay một cơ cấu quyền lực. Nếu chỉ nhìn Giáo hội như một cơ cấu, chúng ta rất dễ mắc kẹt trong những tranh luận về pháp lý, quyền lãnh đạo, tổ chức, hệ phái và những xung đột của lịch sử. Nhưng từ chiều sâu Phật học, nền tảng của Giáo hội là Tăng-già. Sangha có trước mọi giáo hội hiện đại, và Tăng-già là một trong Tam Bảo. Chính ở điểm này, người Phật tử cần đủ tỉnh thức để phân biệt giữa thể tính thanh tịnh hòa hợp của Tăng-già và những hình thái tổ chức Phật giáo xuất hiện trong từng hoàn cảnh lịch sử. Một cơ cấu có thể thịnh suy, một danh xưng có thể trải qua những giai đoạn khác nhau, những thiết chế tôn giáo có thể chịu tác động của xã hội, chính trị và thời đại, nhưng lý tưởng thanh tịnh hòa hợp của Tăng-già, giới luật, Chánh pháp và con đường giải thoát không vì thế mà thay đổi.

GHPGVNTN ra đời năm 1964 trong một hoàn cảnh lịch sử đặc thù của Phật giáo Việt Nam và của dân tộc. Sau 1975, Giáo hội trải qua những biến động sâu sắc, để lại những thương tích chưa hẳn đã được lịch sử giải quyết trọn vẹn. Nhưng nếu chỉ hiểu giai đoạn ấy như một những phân hóa dị biệt giữa những tổ chức, chúng ta sẽ bỏ mất chiều sâu quan trọng hơn chính là nỗ lực bảo vệ tính tự chủ của đời sống tâm linh và phẩm giá tinh thần của Tăng-già trước những quyền lực thế tục. Đó cũng là lý do mối quan hệ giữa GĐPT và Giáo hội không nên được nhìn như một di sản hành chánh của quá khứ mà phải được nhận thức bằng chiều sâu Phật học. Trung kiên với Giáo hội không có nghĩa biến một tổ chức giáo dục thanh thiếu niên thành một phần của những phân hóa giáo quyền; phụng sự Giáo hội càng không có nghĩa bảo vệ mọi quyết định của con người chỉ vì quyết định ấy được thực hiện nhân danh Giáo hội. Trung thành sâu xa nhất với Giáo hội chính là trung thành với Chánh pháp mà Giáo hội có trách nhiệm phụng hành. Khi Giáo hội đứng trong Chánh pháp, người áo Lam hộ trì; khi con người trong Giáo hội biểu hiện những giới hạn vốn có của con người, người áo Lam vẫn kính trọng Tăng bảo nhưng không vì thế đánh mất khả năng tư duy, soi chiếu và hành xử bằng Chánh kiến. Đó không phải bất kính. Đó là sự trưởng thành của một người Phật tử.

Nhìn về Giáo hội cũng chính là nhìn về quê hương, nhưng quê hương hôm nay không còn hoàn toàn là quê hương trong ký ức của năm 1975. Đây là điều cộng đồng lưu vong cần đủ can đảm để nhìn nhận. Một nguy cơ lớn của lưu vong là biến quê hương thành một ký ức đông cứng, rồi yêu thương, phẫn nộ và phán xét hiện tại từ một hình ảnh đã ngưng lại trong quá khứ. Việt Nam mà thế hệ thứ nhất mang theo trong tâm tưởng và Việt Nam của người trẻ đang sống hôm nay không hoàn toàn là một. Năm mươi năm đã trôi qua. Một thanh niên Việt Nam hai mươi tuổi năm 2026 sinh sau biến cố 1975 hơn ba thập niên. Những tranh chấp từng quyết định số phận cha ông có thể đối với em chỉ còn là những trang sử xa xôi. Em đang đối diện với những vấn đề khác: toàn cầu hóa, trí tuệ nhân tạo, mạng xã hội, áp lực thành đạt, khủng hoảng môi trường, sự đổ vỡ của những quan hệ truyền thống, chủ nghĩa tiêu thụ và một thế giới nơi căn tính có thể được tạo dựng rồi xóa bỏ trên màn hình.

Thanh niên Việt-Mỹ cũng đối diện những vấn đề tương tự, nhưng còn mang thêm một câu hỏi âm thầm và dai dẳng đó chính là: Tôi là ai? Tôi Việt Nam đến mức nào; tôi Mỹ đến mức nào, chất Phật tử trong tôi đến mức nào và chiếc áo Lam tôi mặc từ nhỏ có ý nghĩa gì đối với đời sống của tôi? Nếu GĐPT trong nước và hải ngoại chỉ tiếp tục truyền đạt những câu trả lời của thế kỷ XX cho những câu hỏi của thế kỷ XXI, chúng ta có thể giữ được hình thức tổ chức nhưng dần đánh mất tuổi trẻ. Đây mới là cuộc khủng hoảng đáng sợ. Không phải mất một đơn vị, một chức vụ hay một cơ cấu điều hành. Không phải một Ban Hướng Dẫn chia thành hai hay một hệ thống tổ chức phải thay đổi tên gọi, mà là mất khả năng nói với tuổi trẻ bằng một ngôn ngữ khiến các em nhận ra Chánh pháp có liên hệ trực tiếp đến khổ đau, hạnh phúc và sự trưởng thành của chính mình.

Điều kỳ diệu trong tư tưởng giáo dục của Gia Đình Phật Tử nằm ngay trong mục đích tưởng như đã quá quen thuộc: đào luyện thanh thiếu niên thành Phật tử chân chính và góp phần xây dựng xã hội theo tinh thần Phật giáo. Hai vế ấy không thể tách rời. Một Phật tử chân chính không được xác định bằng số bài kinh đã thuộc, số lần đến chùa hay mức độ trung thành với một tổ chức. Nếu giáo dục Phật giáo đúng nghĩa, kết quả cuối cùng phải biểu hiện nơi con người nghĩa là, một con người biết tự chủ và chịu trách nhiệm; biết thương mà không chiếm hữu; biết bất đồng mà không thù hận; biết nhìn thấy khổ đau của người khác; biết nghi ngờ chính kiến chấp của mình; biết sử dụng tự do mà không trở thành nô lệ của dục vọng; biết đứng trước quyền lực mà không đánh mất lương tri; và quan trọng hơn hết, biết soi lại chính mình trước khi nhìn lỗi người. Chính nơi đó, Giới – Định – Tuệ bước ra khỏi kinh sách để trở thành giáo dục.

Bởi vậy, GĐPT không nên tự thu nhỏ thành một tổ chức sinh hoạt cuối tuần dành cho trẻ em Phật tử. Trong lịch sử hiện đại Việt Nam, đây là một trong những mô hình hiếm hoi xây dựng được một hệ thống giáo dục Phật giáo cho trẻ em và thanh thiếu niên kéo dài qua nhiều thế hệ. Chính khả năng ấy mới là vốn liếng lớn nhất của tổ chức. Không phải bất động sản, số lượng đơn vị hay cấp bậc Huynh trưởng, mà là kinh nghiệm giáo dục con người bằng Phật pháp. Nếu nhận thức được giá trị ấy, chúng ta cũng sẽ hiểu rằng GĐPT trong nước và GĐPT hải ngoại, dù đang sống trong những điều kiện rất khác nhau, vẫn mang cùng một trách nhiệm. Trong nước, tổ chức hoạt động giữa những giới hạn lịch sử, xã hội và cơ chế riêng của Việt Nam. Ở hải ngoại, đặc biệt tại Hoa Kỳ, GĐPT có một không gian xã hội dân sự rộng hơn nhưng đối diện một nguy cơ khác không kém phần nghiêm trọng: đồng hóa. Một bên phải tìm cách bảo toàn không gian sinh hoạt; một bên phải tìm cách bảo toàn căn tính. Không thể lấy hoàn cảnh của bên này để giản đơn phán xét lựa chọn của bên kia.

Đây có lẽ là điều năm mươi năm ly hương đáng lẽ phải dạy chúng ta về sự khiêm cung. Người sống trong tự do không nên dùng sự an toàn của mình để đòi hỏi người ở quê nhà phải hành xử như mình; ngược lại, những giới hạn của hoàn cảnh trong nước cũng không thể trở thành lý do để tuổi trẻ ngừng tư duy, ngừng sáng tạo hay ngừng tiếp xúc với những giá trị phổ quát của nhân loại. Hai phía cần nhau. Hải ngoại có nguồn lực, kinh nghiệm xã hội dân sự, giáo dục hiện đại, công nghệ, ngoại ngữ và khả năng tiếp xúc với Phật giáo thế giới. Trong nước có chiều sâu văn hóa, môi trường ngôn ngữ, truyền thống cộng đồng, lịch sử sống động và một lực lượng thanh thiếu niên đông đảo. Nếu biết vượt qua mặc cảm lịch sử, những khác biệt tổ chức và sự nghi kỵ tích tụ qua nhiều thập niên, hai nguồn lực ấy có thể bổ sung cho nhau. Khi một người áo Lam ở hải ngoại góp một học bổng để một Lam viên nghèo trong nước được tiếp tục đến trường, khi một Huynh trưởng có chuyên môn chia sẻ kiến thức giáo dục cho thế hệ trẻ quê nhà, khi những tài liệu Phật học được số hóa và trao truyền không phân biệt ranh giới tổ chức, đó cũng đã là những cuộc trở về. Không phải trở về để giành lại một vị trí, mà trở về để nâng một người khác đứng lên.

Có lẽ một trong những trách nhiệm đạo đức lớn nhất của thế hệ Huynh trưởng hôm nay là đừng bắt thế hệ sau thừa kế nguyên vẹn những thương tích của thế hệ mình. GĐPT đã trải qua những phân hóa. Phật giáo Việt Nam đã trải qua những phân hóa. Cộng đồng người Việt hải ngoại cũng đã trải qua những phân hóa. Có những vết thương có nguyên nhân lịch sử rất thật và không thể giải quyết bằng vài lời kêu gọi hòa hợp dễ dãi. Nhưng ghi nhớ lịch sử và cư trú vĩnh viễn trong lịch sử là hai việc khác nhau. Phật giáo gọi sự bám víu ấy là chấp. Ta có thể chấp một con người, một quan điểm, một tổ chức và nguy hiểm hơn cả là chấp chính nỗi đau của mình đến mức nỗi đau trở thành căn cước. Khi ấy, ta không còn mang ký ức nữa; ký ức bắt đầu trói buộc ta.

Một tổ chức lấy Bi – Trí – Dũng làm nền tảng không thể giáo dục thế hệ trẻ bằng sự thù hận được truyền từ thế hệ trước. Bi mà không có Trí dễ trở thành tình cảm; Trí mà không có Bi có thể trở thành lạnh lùng; Dũng mà thiếu cả Bi lẫn Trí rất dễ biến thành đối đầu. Chữa lành những phân hóa của GĐPT, vì thế, không phải xóa lịch sử, càng không phải thỏa hiệp với sự thật. Đó là nhìn thẳng vào lịch sử mà không để lịch sử tiếp tục quyết định toàn bộ tương lai. Một tổ chức Phật giáo không thể sợ sự thật, bởi Phật giáo không xây dựng trên đức tin mù quáng. Đức Phật đặt trí tuệ ở trung tâm con đường giải thoát. Trước mọi quyền lực, dù là quyền lực chính trị, tôn giáo hay ngay chính quyền lực nội bộ tổ chức, người Phật tử vẫn phải giữ Chánh kiến. Nhưng Chánh kiến khác với phẫn nộ. Phê phán một cơ chế không đồng nghĩa thù ghét những con người sống trong cơ chế ấy; bất đồng với một tổ chức Phật giáo không cho phép chúng ta xúc phạm Tăng Ni thuộc tổ chức đó; bảo vệ truyền thống GHPGVNTN cũng không đòi hỏi biến những Phật tử thuộc một truyền thống hay cơ cấu khác thành đối tượng đối nghịch. Nếu làm như vậy, chúng ta có thể thắng một cuộc tranh luận nhưng đã thua ngay trên nền tảng Phật pháp, bởi Đức Phật không dạy chúng ta thay một kiến chấp bằng một kiến chấp khác; Ngài dạy chúng ta thấy rõ cơ chế sinh khởi của kiến chấp.

Đây cũng chính là một trong những năng lực quan trọng nhất mà GĐPT phải trao cho tuổi trẻ hôm nay, nghĩa là khả năng suy nghĩ độc lập mà không đánh mất từ bi. Trong một thế giới mà các thuật toán truyền thông đang kiếm lợi từ phẫn nộ, chia rẽ, cực đoan và những phản ứng tức thời của con người, khả năng dừng lại, nhìn sâu, nhận diện thành kiến của chính mình rồi mới hành động đã trở thành một hình thức tu tập. Sau năm mươi năm, GĐPTVN tại Hoa Kỳ đang sở hữu một vị trí lịch sử đặc biệt để thực hiện điều đó. Chúng ta thuộc về Việt Nam nhưng sống trong xã hội Hoa Kỳ; thừa hưởng Phật giáo Á Đông nhưng con em trưởng thành trong văn minh phương Tây; mang ký ức của thế hệ tị nạn nhưng đang giáo dục những thế hệ không còn ký ức trực tiếp về chiến tranh. Chính vị trí ấy từng tạo nên nhiều khủng hoảng căn tính, nhưng nhìn theo tinh thần Trung đạo, nó cũng có thể trở thành một lợi thế. GĐPT tại Hoa Kỳ có thể trở thành chiếc cầu giữa Phật giáo Việt Nam và Phật giáo thế giới, giữa tiếng Việt và tiếng Anh, giữa truyền thống và khoa học giáo dục hiện đại, giữa quê hương và cộng đồng Việt Nam hải ngoại, giữa ký ức của cha ông và tương lai của con cháu.

Muốn làm được điều đó, tổ chức phải chuyển từ tâm thức bảo tồn sang tâm thức trao truyền. Bảo tồn thường hỏi làm thế nào để giữ nguyên những gì chúng ta đã có. Trao truyền đặt một câu hỏi khó hơn về điều gì là tinh yếu đến mức phải được mang sang thế hệ kế tiếp, và hình thức phải chuyển hóa như thế nào để tinh yếu ấy tiếp tục sống? Một truyền thống sống không phải là truyền thống không thay đổi. Một truyền thống sống là truyền thống có khả năng thay đổi mà không đánh mất linh hồn. Chính từ nhận thức ấy, câu hỏi “quê hương cần gì ở chúng ta?” cũng cần được trả lời bằng những điều cụ thể hơn những tuyên ngôn yêu quê hương, nghĩa là một học bổng cho một Đoàn sinh nghèo, một chương trình đào tạo Huynh trưởng có chất lượng, một thư viện Phật học số bằng tiếng Việt, một hệ thống tài liệu giáo dục trẻ em phù hợp với thời đại, những khóa đào tạo về tâm lý thanh thiếu niên, phòng chống bạo hành, kỹ năng lãnh đạo, công nghệ và truyền thông; những chương trình trao đổi để người trẻ trong nước và hải ngoại có thể gặp nhau mà không phải đứng về một phe nào trước khi được quyền gọi nhau là anh chị em; một kho lưu trữ lịch sử GĐPT để những tài liệu đang thất tán không biến mất cùng thế hệ tiền bối; và những công trình nghiên cứu nghiêm túc về lịch sử Phật giáo, lịch sử GĐPTVN, trong đó những trang đau thương cũng được ghi lại bằng thái độ của người làm sử chứ không phải bằng cơn giận của người thắng hay người thua. Trên hết, quê hương cần một thế hệ người Việt trẻ có đạo hạnh, có tư duy độc lập và còn biết đau trước nỗi đau của người khác. Nếu GĐPT làm được điều ấy, tổ chức đã phụng sự quê hương mà không cần bất cứ khẩu hiệu chính trị nào.

Và câu hỏi cũng nên được hỏi: Giáo hội cần gì ở GĐPT? Không riêng GĐPT cần Giáo hội; Giáo hội cũng cần GĐPT. Một Giáo hội không có thế hệ trẻ sẽ dần trở thành một thiết chế của ký ức. Một ngôi chùa không còn nghe tiếng trẻ em rồi một ngày sẽ chỉ còn tiếng chuông giữa những mái đầu bạc. GĐPT chính là nơi Phật giáo gặp tương lai. Một em Oanh Vũ hôm nay có thể là một cư sĩ trí thức ba mươi năm sau; một Đoàn sinh hôm nay có thể trở thành bác sĩ, giáo viên, kỹ sư, học giả, nhà hoạt động xã hội, hoặc bước vào đời sống xuất gia; một Huynh trưởng trẻ hôm nay có thể là người gìn giữ mạng mạch giáo dục Phật giáo cho cả một cộng đồng trong tương lai. Bởi vậy, GĐPT không nên được nhìn như một lực lượng phụ thuộc của Giáo hội, mà là một cơ thể giáo dục của cộng đồng Phật giáo, nơi Chánh pháp được chuyển thành nhân cách trước khi nhân cách ấy bước vào xã hội. Nếu Tăng-già giữ gìn mạng mạch Chánh pháp thì giáo dục tuổi trẻ chính là một trong những con đường để mạng mạch ấy đi vào tương lai.

Năm mươi năm trước, nhiều người Việt ra đi với ý nghĩ rồi sẽ trở về. Có người đã trở về, có người chưa từng trở về, có người nằm xuống trên quê hương thứ hai, và có những người con sinh tại Mỹ không biết mình có thể gọi nơi nào là quê hương bằng cùng một cảm xúc như cha mẹ. Nhưng với người Phật tử, trở về vốn không chỉ là chuyển động của thân. Trong ý nghĩa sâu xa của quy y đã có một cuộc trở về: trở về nương tựa Phật, trở về nương tựa Pháp, trở về nương tựa Tăng. Bởi vậy, sau năm mươi năm, cuộc trở về quan trọng nhất của GĐPTVN tại Hoa Kỳ không phải trở về một địa giới, một cơ cấu hay một thời đại đã mất, mà là trở về với lời nguyện ban đầu: tại sao những bậc tiền bối đã dựng nên tổ chức này?

Không phải để tạo thêm một quyền lực trong Phật giáo, cũng không phải để những thế hệ sau tranh nhau quyền sở hữu lịch sử, càng không phải để chiếc áo Lam trở thành dấu hiệu phân biệt người này với người khác. Mong muốn giáo dục tuổi trẻ. Một ước nguyện giản dị đến mức đôi khi phải đi qua ba phần tư thế kỷ chúng ta mới nhận ra hết sự lớn lao của nó: giáo dục một người trẻ biết thương người, giúp một thiếu niên biết tự chủ, trao cho một thanh niên khả năng nhìn đời bằng Chánh kiến, đào luyện một Huynh trưởng biết đặt lý tưởng cao hơn bản ngã. Nếu làm được những điều ấy, Phật giáo còn; nếu Phật giáo còn trong con người, Giáo hội còn; nếu Chánh pháp còn trong cách một thế hệ đối xử với thế hệ kế tiếp, GĐPT còn. Còn nếu chúng ta giữ được tất cả danh xưng, huy hiệu, cấp bậc, nghi lễ và cơ cấu mà không còn khả năng làm cho một người trẻ trở nên hiểu biết hơn, từ ái hơn và tự do hơn khỏi tham, sân, si, thì sự tồn tại ấy dù kéo dài thêm một trăm năm cũng chỉ là kéo dài hình bóng của một quá khứ.

Năm mươi năm GĐPT Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ, vì thế, có lẽ không nên được đánh dấu bằng một dấu chấm than mà nên được đặt bằng một dấu hỏi: chúng ta sẽ cống hiến điều gì cho quê hương, cho Giáo hội, cho những người áo Lam trong nước mà có thể chúng ta chưa từng gặp, và cho những người trẻ Việt Nam sinh ra trên khắp thế giới đang đứng giữa nhiều căn tính, nhiều nền văn hóa và một tương lai biến đổi đến mức chính chúng ta cũng chưa hình dung nổi? Xin được khép lại chuyên mục này bằng một niềm tin rất nhỏ nhưng tha thiết đó là, dẫu thời cuộc còn nhiều biến động, dẫu tổ chức còn những dị biệt và những vết thương chưa kịp lành, mong người áo Lam vẫn đủ thương nhau để không làm nặng thêm những gì lịch sử đã để lại, đủ trí tuệ để phân biệt điều cốt lõi với những hình thức nhất thời, và đủ khiêm cung để biết rằng không một thế hệ nào sở hữu Gia Đình Phật Tử cho riêng mình. Chúng ta chỉ là những người được trao giữ một đoạn đường. Trước chúng ta đã có người đi, sau chúng ta sẽ còn người đến. Điều có thể làm là giữ cho ngọn lửa ấy khỏi tắt, giữ cho chiếc áo Lam còn mang được hơi ấm của tình Lam, giữ cho con đường giáo dục tuổi trẻ còn đặt trên nền tảng Bi – Trí – Dũng, và giữ trong lòng một hướng nhìn không quên quê hương, không xa rời Tăng-già, không lìa Chánh pháp.

Mai này, khi những người đang viết và đang đọc những dòng này cũng trở thành ký ức, mong rằng lớp người đi sau không chỉ nhớ đến chúng ta qua những đại lễ, những hình ảnh hay những dấu mốc kỷ niệm mà có thể nhận ra rằng đã từng có một thế hệ biết cúi đầu trước công hạnh tiền nhân, biết đau trước những phân ly của tổ chức, biết thương quê hương dù sống xa quê hương và, đã cố gắng trao lại cho tuổi trẻ một Gia Đình Phật Tử còn đủ trong sáng để các em tìm thấy nơi đó một con đường trở về với chính mình.

Nếu được như vậy, bảy mươi lăm năm hay một trăm năm về sau cũng chỉ là những con số đi qua. Điều còn lại sẽ là sự tiếp nối.

Và trong sự tiếp nối ấy, xin được thành kính gửi một lời tri ân đến tất cả những người đã đi trước, một lời thương đến những người đang cùng đi, và một lời nguyện âm thầm dành cho những thế hệ áo Lam chưa đến:

Xin cho chúng ta đừng bao giờ vì giữ lấy tổ chức mà quên mất con người; đừng vì bảo vệ quá khứ mà khép lại tương lai; và đừng vì những khác biệt nhất thời mà quên rằng, dưới màu áo Lam này, điều đã đưa chúng ta đến với nhau từ buổi đầu vẫn chỉ là một ước nguyện rất lành — học Phật để sửa mình, thương người và cùng nhau làm cho cuộc đời bớt khổ.

Đó có lẽ là cách khiêm cung nhất để tri ân quá khứ, và cũng là lời hứa đẹp nhất chúng ta có thể gửi về tương lai.

Fifty Years of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in the United States:
Looking Toward the Homeland and the Sangha

Fifty years is a span of time long enough for a generation to become history, for memory to become heritage, and for an exodus to be understood as something more than a matter of geography. For the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in the United States, half a century of presence in a second homeland is an achievement worthy of reflection and gratitude. From the first Vietnamese families who carried with them the burden and memory of displacement after the upheaval of 1975, units of the Grey Shirt community gradually took root alongside Vietnamese Buddhist temples. From a handful of modest units within a refugee community still finding its footing in a foreign land, a distinctive form of Buddhist youth education continued to develop across many states, through Dharma study programs, leadership training camps, and successive generations of Youth Leaders and youth members growing to maturity between two cultures. Yet if the commemoration of these fifty years serves only to look back upon what has been built on American soil, we may be seeing only half of the journey. The other half lies across the Pacific. It is the homeland; and deeper than the homeland understood merely as a geographical territory, it is the Sangha, the monastic community, the generations of Grey Shirts who continue the work of educating young people in Vietnam, and the history of Vietnamese Buddhism itself—a history from which, despite divisions, institutional forms, changing designations, and political circumstances, we cannot sever ourselves without simultaneously losing part of our own identity. An exiled people may build a second homeland, but a tradition cannot have two sources.

The upheaval of 1975 brought about an unprecedented dispersal in modern Vietnamese history. As waves of Vietnamese left their homeland, Vietnamese Buddhism also entered a new historical condition. Vietnamese Buddhist temples appeared throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. Monastics and lay Buddhists carried with them their traditions of practice. The Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association followed Vietnamese families into the life of exile. The history of GĐPTVN in the United States is therefore a history of a particular kind: like a branch carried far from a greater tree whose roots had already been nourished by the Buddhist revival movement of the early twentieth century, by the profound concern for youth education of lay Buddhist Tâm Minh Lê Đình Thám and other pioneers of his generation, by Gia Đình Phật Hóa Phổ, and eventually by the movement toward unification that gave rise to the name Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam in 1951. Seen in this light, fifty years in the United States are not fifty years of an organization born on American soil, but fifty years of a branch living far from its roots. And here arises perhaps the most important question of this great commemoration: after fifty years, has the distance between branch and root grown smaller, or greater?

Today, technology has nearly erased geographical distance. A ceremony in California can be witnessed instantly in Huế, Đà Nẵng, or Saigon. A class can connect Youth Leaders across several continents. Buddhist scriptures, training materials, and organizational histories can be shared within seconds. Yet herein lies one of the paradoxes of our age: as the distance of communication grows shorter, the distance between minds and hearts may grow longer. We know more about one another, yet we do not necessarily understand one another more deeply; we see one another more frequently, yet we may not truly have drawn closer. Fifty years, therefore, ask not merely how far we have traveled, but compel us to ask what we have carried with us, what we have lost along the way, and whether we can still recognize the path of return.

When speaking of the Unified Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam—Giáo Hội Phật Giáo Việt Nam Thống Nhất (GHPGVNTN)—the first thing we must understand is that the Sangha should not be conceived merely as an administrative designation or a structure of authority. If we view it only as an institution, we can easily become trapped in disputes over legality, leadership, organization, sectarian affiliation, and the conflicts inherited from history. From the deeper perspective of Buddhist thought, however, the foundation of the Sangha is precisely the monastic Sangha itself. Sangha precedes every modern Buddhist institution, and the Sangha is one of the Three Jewels. Here the Buddhist practitioner must possess sufficient mindfulness and discernment to distinguish between the essential nature of the Sangha as a community of purity and harmony, and the institutional forms through which Buddhism manifests itself under particular historical circumstances. Institutions may flourish and decline; names may pass through different historical phases; religious structures may be affected by society, politics, and the conditions of their age. Yet the ideal of purity and harmony within the Sangha, the Vinaya, the Dharma, and the path of liberation do not thereby change.

The Unified Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam was established in 1964 within a particular historical context for both Vietnamese Buddhism and the Vietnamese nation. After 1975, the Sangha underwent profound upheavals, leaving wounds that history has not entirely resolved. Yet if that period is understood merely as a series of institutional differences and divisions, we risk overlooking its deeper significance: the effort to safeguard the autonomy of spiritual life and the moral dignity of the Sangha in the face of secular power. For this reason, the relationship between GĐPT and the Sangha should not be regarded merely as an administrative inheritance from the past; it must be understood through the depth of Buddhist thought. Steadfastness toward the Sangha does not mean turning a Buddhist youth educational organization into a participant in divisions over religious authority. Nor does serving the Sangha mean defending every human decision simply because it has been made in the Sangha’s name. The deepest fidelity to the Sangha is fidelity to the Dharma that the Sangha bears the responsibility to uphold and embody. When the Sangha stands within the Dharma, the Grey Shirt community supports and protects it; when individuals within the Sangha reveal the limitations inherent in the human condition, the Grey Shirt community continues to revere the Sangha as one of the Three Jewels without surrendering its capacity for reflection, discernment, and action grounded in Right View. This is not irreverence. It is the maturity of a Buddhist practitioner.

To look toward the Sangha is also to look toward the homeland. Yet the homeland of today is no longer entirely the homeland preserved in the memory of 1975. This is something the Vietnamese diaspora must have the courage to acknowledge. One of the great dangers of exile is the tendency to freeze the homeland into memory, and then to love, resent, and judge the present through an image arrested in the past. The Vietnam carried in the consciousness of the first generation and the Vietnam inhabited by young people today are not entirely the same. Fifty years have passed. A twenty-year-old Vietnamese in 2026 was born more than three decades after 1975. The conflicts that once determined the destinies of their parents and grandparents may now appear to them as distant pages of history. Their concerns are different: globalization, artificial intelligence, social media, the pressures of achievement, environmental crisis, the erosion of traditional relationships, consumerism, and a world in which identities can be constructed and erased upon a screen.

Vietnamese American youth confront many of the same realities, yet they also carry another quiet and persistent question: Who am I? How Vietnamese am I? How American am I? How deeply Buddhist am I, and what does the Grey Shirt I have worn since childhood actually mean in my life? If GĐPT in Vietnam and abroad continues to offer twentieth-century answers to twenty-first-century questions, we may preserve the outward form of the organization while gradually losing the younger generation. This is the crisis we should fear most. It is not the loss of a unit, a position, or an administrative structure. It is not that a Board of Guidance may divide into two, nor that an organizational system may be compelled to change its name. The true crisis is the loss of our ability to speak to young people in a language through which they can recognize that the Dharma bears directly upon their own suffering, happiness, and maturation.

The remarkable depth of GĐPT’s educational vision is already contained in its familiar purpose: to train young people to become true Buddhists and to contribute to the building of society in accordance with the Buddhist spirit. These two dimensions cannot be separated. A true Buddhist is not defined by the number of sutras one has memorized, the frequency with which one attends the temple, or the degree of one’s loyalty to an organization. If Buddhist education is authentic, its ultimate result must become visible in the human person: a person capable of self-mastery and responsibility; capable of loving without possessing; of disagreeing without hatred; of recognizing the suffering of others; of questioning one’s own attachments to views; of exercising freedom without becoming enslaved by desire; of standing before power without surrendering conscience; and, above all, of examining oneself before searching for the faults of others. It is here that Sīla, Samādhi, and Prajñā—Discipline, Concentration, and Wisdom—step out of the scriptures and become education.

GĐPT, therefore, must never reduce itself to a weekend activity organization for Buddhist children. In modern Vietnamese history, it represents one of the rare models to have developed a sustained system of Buddhist education for children and young people across generations. This capacity is the organization’s greatest inheritance—not property, not the number of local units, not ranks within the Youth Leader system, but the accumulated experience of educating human beings through the Dharma. Once we recognize this value, we can also understand that GĐPT in Vietnam and GĐPT abroad, despite profoundly different conditions, bear a common responsibility. In Vietnam, the organization operates within the particular historical, social, and institutional constraints of the country. Abroad, especially in the United States, GĐPT enjoys a broader sphere of civil society but confronts another danger no less serious: assimilation. One side must seek to preserve the space in which it can function; the other must seek to preserve its identity. We cannot simply take the circumstances of one side as the standard by which to judge the choices of the other.

Perhaps this is what fifty years of exile should have taught us about humility. Those who live in freedom should not use the security of their circumstances to demand that those in the homeland behave as they themselves would. Conversely, the limitations of circumstances within Vietnam cannot become a reason for young people to cease thinking, creating, or engaging with the universal values of humanity. The two sides need one another. The diaspora possesses resources, experience in civil society, modern educational methods, technology, language skills, and access to global Buddhism. Vietnam possesses cultural depth, the living environment of the Vietnamese language, communal traditions, an immediate relationship with history, and a large population of young people. If historical burdens, organizational differences, and decades of accumulated suspicion can be transcended, these two reservoirs of strength can complement one another. When a Grey Shirt Buddhist abroad contributes a scholarship so that a disadvantaged GĐPT member in Vietnam may continue an education; when a Youth Leader with professional expertise shares educational knowledge with a younger generation in the homeland; when Buddhist materials are digitized and transmitted without regard to organizational boundaries—these too are forms of return. Not a return to reclaim a position, but a return to help another person stand upright.

Perhaps one of the greatest moral responsibilities of today’s generation of Youth Leaders is not to compel the next generation to inherit intact the wounds of our own. GĐPT has endured divisions. Vietnamese Buddhism has endured divisions. The Vietnamese diaspora has endured divisions. Some wounds arise from very real historical causes and cannot be healed by facile appeals to reconciliation. But remembering history and dwelling permanently within history are not the same. Buddhism understands such clinging as attachment. We can cling to a person, an opinion, an organization; and most dangerously, we can cling to our own pain until suffering itself becomes an identity. At that point, we no longer carry memory; memory begins to bind us.

An organization grounded in Compassion, Wisdom, and Courage—Bi, Trí, Dũng—cannot educate the younger generation through hatred inherited from those who came before. Compassion without Wisdom can dissolve into sentimentality; Wisdom without Compassion can become cold; Courage deprived of both Compassion and Wisdom can easily become confrontation. To heal the divisions within GĐPT, therefore, does not mean erasing history, much less compromising the truth. It means looking directly into history without allowing history to determine the entirety of our future. A Buddhist organization cannot be afraid of truth, for Buddhism is not founded upon blind belief. The Buddha placed wisdom at the heart of the path to liberation. Before every form of power—political, religious, or even authority within our own organization—the Buddhist must preserve Right View. Yet Right View is not anger. To criticize a system does not mean hating the people who live within it. To disagree with a Buddhist organization does not give us the right to disparage the monks and nuns associated with it. To preserve the tradition of the Unified Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam does not require us to turn Buddhists belonging to another tradition or institutional structure into adversaries. If we do so, we may win an argument while already having lost on the ground of the Dharma. The Buddha did not teach us to replace one attachment to views with another; he taught us to see clearly how attachment to views itself arises.

This is also among the most important capacities GĐPT must cultivate in young people today: the ability to think independently without losing compassion. In a world where digital algorithms profit from anger, division, extremism, and instantaneous human reactions, the ability to stop, look deeply, recognize one’s own prejudices, and only then act has itself become a form of Buddhist practice. After fifty years, GĐPTVN in the United States occupies a distinctive historical position from which to undertake this work. We belong to Vietnam while living within American society. We inherit Asian Buddhism while our children mature within Western civilization. We carry the memory of the refugee generation while educating generations with no direct memory of war. This position has produced profound crises of identity, yet understood through the spirit of the Middle Way, it can also become a unique strength. GĐPT in the United States can serve as a bridge between Vietnamese Buddhism and global Buddhism, between Vietnamese and English, between tradition and contemporary educational thought, between the homeland and the Vietnamese diaspora, between the memory of our forebears and the future of our children.

To fulfill this role, the organization must move from a mentality of preservation toward one of transmission. Preservation asks how we can keep intact what we have inherited. Transmission asks the more difficult question: what is so essential that it must be carried into the next generation, and how must its forms be transformed so that its essence may remain alive? A living tradition is not a tradition that never changes. A living tradition is one capable of change without losing its soul. From this understanding, the question “What does the homeland need from us?” must also be answered in ways more concrete than declarations of love for one’s country: a scholarship for a disadvantaged youth member; a high-quality Youth Leader training program; a digital Vietnamese-language Buddhist library; educational materials for children appropriate to the present age; training in youth psychology, abuse prevention, leadership, technology, and communications; exchange programs through which young people in Vietnam and abroad may meet one another without first being required to choose a side before they are permitted to call one another brothers and sisters; an archival repository of GĐPT history so that documents now being scattered are not lost with the passing of the elder generation; and serious scholarship on the history of Vietnamese Buddhism and GĐPTVN, in which painful chapters are recorded with the discipline of the historian rather than the anger of victor or vanquished. Above all, the homeland needs a younger Vietnamese generation endowed with moral integrity, independent thought, and the capacity still to suffer at the suffering of others. If GĐPT can accomplish this, it will have served the homeland without the need for any political slogan.

The question should also be asked in the other direction: What does the Sangha need from GĐPT? It is not only GĐPT that needs the Sangha; the Sangha also needs GĐPT. A Sangha without a younger generation risks gradually becoming an institution of memory. A temple in which the voices of children are no longer heard may one day be left with only the sound of the bell among aging heads. GĐPT is precisely one of the places where Buddhism encounters its future. An Oanh Vũ child today may become an intellectually engaged lay Buddhist thirty years from now; a youth member today may become a physician, teacher, engineer, scholar, social advocate, or may enter the monastic life; a young Youth Leader today may become the person who preserves the continuity of Buddhist education for an entire community. GĐPT therefore should not be regarded merely as a subordinate arm of the Sangha, but as an educational body within the Buddhist community—a place where the Dharma is transformed into character before that character enters society. If the monastic Sangha safeguards the living continuity of the Dharma, then the education of young people is one of the paths by which that continuity enters the future.

Fifty years ago, many Vietnamese departed believing that one day they would return. Some have returned. Some never did. Some have been laid to rest in their second homeland. And there are children born in America who do not know whether they can call any place “homeland” with the same feeling their parents once did. Yet for a Buddhist, return has never been merely a movement of the body. Within the deepest meaning of taking refuge lies already an act of return: returning to take refuge in the Buddha, returning to take refuge in the Dharma, returning to take refuge in the Sangha. After fifty years, therefore, the most important return for GĐPTVN in the United States is not a return to a territory, an institutional structure, or a historical era that has passed. It is a return to the original vow and to the question: why did our predecessors establish this organization?

Not to create another center of power within Buddhism; not so that later generations might contend over ownership of history; and certainly not so that the Grey Shirt might become a mark separating one person from another. Their aspiration was the education of youth. It was a vow so simple that perhaps we have had to journey through three quarters of a century before recognizing its full magnitude: to educate a young person to know how to love others; to help an adolescent learn self-mastery; to give a young adult the capacity to look upon life through Right View; to train a Youth Leader who can place the ideal above the ego. If we can do these things, Buddhism endures. If Buddhism endures within human beings, the Sangha endures. If the Dharma remains alive in the way one generation treats the generation that follows, GĐPT endures. But if we preserve every name, emblem, rank, ritual, and institutional structure while losing the capacity to help a young person become more understanding, more compassionate, and freer from greed, hatred, and delusion, then even if such an existence continues for another hundred years, it will amount only to prolonging the shadow of a past.

Fifty years of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in the United States, therefore, should perhaps not be marked by an exclamation point, but by a question mark: What shall we contribute to the homeland, to the Sangha, to those Grey Shirt brothers and sisters in Vietnam whom we may never have met, and to Vietnamese young people born throughout the world who now stand amid multiple identities, multiple cultures, and a future changing beyond even our own capacity to imagine? Perhaps the answer remains within an old vow: A Buddhist opens the heart in loving-kindness and respects all life. After all the divisions of history, if the Grey Shirt community can still extend compassion even toward those who are different from us, the homeland has not been lost. If we still possess enough wisdom to look upon history without becoming prisoners of history, the tradition has not been lost. If we still possess enough courage to defend truth without nourishing hatred, the spirit of the Sangha has not been lost. And if, from California, Paris, Sydney, and Toronto to Huế, Đà Nẵng, Saigon, or a small GĐPT unit in the Vietnamese countryside, young people can still put on the Grey Shirt and recognize one another as brothers and sisters within the same educational ideal, then fifty years of exile will no longer be merely the story of a departure. It becomes a return—not a return to where we stood in 1975, but to a place deeper than every border and every division: a return to the Dharma, to the Sangha, to the homeland in its cultural and spiritual meaning, and to our responsibility to transmit a path of life to the generations yet to come.

Then, at last, the ultimate homeland of the Buddhist—the Grey Shirt—is not found in possession. The homeland is found in continuity.

At this point, as we bring to a close this special commemorative series marking the 75th Anniversary of the name Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam and the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in the United States, we recognize that these pages have offered only a few modest strokes within a journey far greater than any single account could contain—a journey shaped by the dedication, sacrifice, tears, and steadfast perseverance of generations of pioneers, Venerable monastics, Youth Leaders, and youth members, many of whose names have quietly receded into the passage of time. We look back in gratitude; yet the deepest expression of gratitude is not found in praising the past, but in humbly asking ourselves whether the lives we lead today are worthy of what has been entrusted to us. Seventy-five years of a name and fifty years of presence in a land far from home are not so much numbers in which to take pride as milestones reminding us of our responsibility. For history acquires its true meaning only when the values preserved through the devotion of entire lifetimes are still able to take root and blossom in another generation.

We therefore close this commemorative series with a small but heartfelt faith: that despite the uncertainties of our time, despite the differences that remain within the organization and the wounds that have yet to heal, those who wear the Grey Shirt may still have enough love for one another not to deepen the burdens history has already left behind; enough wisdom to distinguish what is essential from what belongs only to passing forms; and enough humility to understand that no generation can claim Gia Đình Phật Tử as its own. We are merely those entrusted with one portion of the path. Others walked it before us, and others will come after us. What we can do is keep the flame from going out; preserve within the Grey Shirt the warmth of our spiritual kinship; keep the education of young people firmly grounded in Compassion, Wisdom, and Courage—Bi, Trí, Dũng; and carry within our hearts a vision that does not forget the homeland, does not drift away from the Sangha, and does not depart from the Dharma.

One day, when those of us writing and reading these words have ourselves become part of memory, may the generations that follow remember us not merely through great commemorations, photographs, or historical milestones, but recognize that there once was a generation that knew how to bow in gratitude before the noble dedication of those who came before; that knew how to feel the pain of divisions within the organization; that continued to love the homeland even while living far from it; and that tried, with whatever strength it possessed, to pass on to the young a Gia Đình Phật Tử still pure enough for them to discover within it a path of return to their own deepest selves.

If that can be so, then seventy-five years, or even a hundred years from now, will ultimately be only numbers passing through time. What remains will be the continuity of the path.

And within that continuity, we respectfully offer a word of gratitude to all who have gone before us, a word of loving fellowship to those who are walking beside us today, and a quiet aspiration for the generations of Grey Shirts yet to come:

May we never preserve the organization at the expense of the human being; never protect the past by closing the door to the future; and never allow the differences of a passing moment to make us forget that, beneath this Grey Shirt, what first brought us together was always a simple and wholesome aspiration—to learn the Buddha’s teachings so that we may transform ourselves, to love and care for others, and together to make this life a little less burdened by suffering.

Perhaps this is the humblest way to express our gratitude to the past—and the most beautiful promise we can offer to the future.
