An Encouraging Letter – Being Present to Nurture the Bodhi Mind
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Leaders of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in the United States,
Each year, the Unified Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam – United States of America devotes great effort to organizing Dharma Retreats and Buddhist Study Programs for both the Sangha and the lay community. These gatherings are far more than occasions for reunion. They are sacred opportunities for Buddhists to return to the Dharma, listen to the Buddha’s teachings, renew their faith, and deepen their original aspiration on the path of cultivation.
Looking at the program of this year’s Twelfth North American Buddhist Study Retreat, one quickly realizes that it is by no means intended exclusively for monastics. Over the course of four continuous days, participants engage in chanting services, meditation, daily practice, Dharma lectures, discussion forums, English-language sessions, and numerous classes specifically designed for lay practitioners. From the early hours of dawn until evening, the entire schedule forms an uninterrupted journey of spiritual cultivation for all who aspire to nurture the Bodhi Mind.
This naturally invites us to pause and reflect.
The Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association was founded to educate lay Buddhists according to the spirit of Vietnamese Buddhism. We have long regarded ourselves as devoted upāsakas of the Triple Gem, protectors of the Dharma, and the educational arm of the Sangha entrusted with guiding Buddhist youth. If this is indeed our aspiration, then we may well ask ourselves: Has our presence in the Sangha’s Dharma activities truly reflected the commitment we profess?
Each of us undoubtedly has legitimate responsibilities and personal circumstances. Family obligations, professional commitments, geographical distance, and responsibilities within our local units are all genuine challenges. No one would deny these realities.
Yet there is another truth that deserves our sincere reflection.
A GĐPT Leader cannot mature solely through administrative experience, organizational skills, or years of service. These are certainly valuable, but they are not sufficient. What truly shapes the character of a Buddhist leader is an ever-deepening life of spiritual cultivation. Without continually nourishing that inner life, one may remain exceedingly busy with Buddhist activities while gradually losing the depth that comes from being a genuine student of the Buddha.
A lamp can continue to illuminate others only so long as it is continually replenished with oil.
For this reason, the Sangha’s retreats are not simply events to attend. They are opportunities to return—return to the Triple Gem, return to our original aspiration, and return to ourselves after months of devoted service amid the demands of daily life.
Perhaps what the Sangha hopes to see from the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association is not merely our presence whenever additional volunteers are needed for ceremonies, logistics, or organizational support. More precious still is the presence of our Leaders and mature members as sincere practitioners—lay Buddhists who continue to grow steadily in the Dharma.
For the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association has never been an end in itself.
Rather, it is a path of Buddhist education whose purpose is to bring people closer to the Triple Gem, closer to the Sangha, and closer to the life of awakening. If one day we devote abundant time to organizational affairs while becoming increasingly absent from the Sangha’s Dharma assemblies, then perhaps it is time for each of us to ask whether the means have gradually become mistaken for the end.
These words are offered neither as criticism nor as comparison. They are simply a gentle reminder to myself and to all of us.
Each retreat we attend is another opportunity to become once again a student of the Buddha. Every chanting service, every Dharma talk, every discussion quietly nourishes the Bodhi Mind, enabling us to return to our local units with greater serenity, broader vision, and a deeper spirit of Lam fellowship.
It is my earnest hope that, in this retreat and in those yet to come, we will see more Grey Shirts among the Dharma assembly—not so that others may measure the size of our organization, but so that we ourselves may continue to grow on the path of cultivation and selfless service.
For ultimately, the true measure of a GĐPT Leader is not simply how many Buddhist activities have been completed, but how profoundly one’s own life has been transformed through the Dharma.
It is my heartfelt wish that each of us will join these Dharma assemblies with the spirit of children returning to our common home within the Triple Gem.
In particular, I would like to encourage our Regional Leadership Councils, local leadership bodies, and all GĐPT Leaders residing in the host city or neighboring communities where these retreats are held to regard this as a particularly auspicious opportunity.
Your presence represents far more than individual participation. It naturally strengthens the bond between the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association and the Sangha. Whether assisting at the registration table, helping coordinate activities, welcoming participants, or simply standing respectfully among the assembly in your Grey Shirt, every gesture contributes meaningfully to the success of the Buddha’s work.
Accordingly, local Leadership Councils, blessed with the advantages of proximity and available manpower, are warmly encouraged to participate actively and support the Sangha’s Dharma activities whenever they are held within their region. Such participation is not merely an act of sharing responsibilities with the organizing committee; it also nurtures the mutual respect and cooperation that naturally arise between two communities united by the common aspiration of protecting and propagating the Buddhadharma. This is not an obligation imposed from without, but the natural expression of living together beneath the same roof of the Buddha’s teaching.
Indeed, if every time the Sangha conducts a Dharma activity within a locality, we are able to gather GĐPT Leaders and mature members to study, practice, and serve together, then over time the image of the GĐPT Leader will no longer be known only through our own organizational activities, but will become an integral and familiar presence within the broader life of the Sangha itself. In this way, the meaning of being upāsakas devoted to the Triple Gem will be expressed not merely through words, but through our presence and our actions.
Namo Constant Diligence Bodhisattva Mahāsattva.
