By Dharma Master T’ai-Hsu: The Practice of Bodhisattva Dharma | The Eight Precepts

The Eight Precepts are the discipline of laypeople engaged in short training periods or in preparation to leave home. Because the world of laypeople with its work and family obligations can be fatiguing both mentally and physically, the Buddhist tradition allows and encourages periods of retreat. During these periods, the lay disciples accept the Eight Precepts and experience a bit of the peace of a well-ordered and disciplined life. In this way, they can develop more understanding of the Buddhadharma and enjoy a clarity of mind analogous to the happiness of springtime. The layman’s precepts are the same as the first nine of the Sramanera’s precepts, the sixth and seventh being combined to make a total of eight. It is customary in Buddhist countries to observe these precepts on the new- and full-moon days of the lunar calendar. The precepts close the doors to the realms of woe (apaya-bhumi) and open the doors to the heaven–worlds and the realms of the sage.

Bát Quan Trai Giới là kỷ luật của những người cư sĩ tại gia trong những thời tu tập ngắn hạn hoặc chuẩn bị xuất gia. Vì hàng cư sĩ với công việc và nghĩa vụ gia đình có thể gây mệt mỏi cả về tinh thần lẫn thể chất, truyền thống Phật giáo cho phép và khuyến khích những khoảng thời gian nhập thất. Trong những giai đoạn này, các đệ tử tại gia chấp nhận Bát Quan Trai Giới và trải nghiệm một chút bình yên của một cuộc sống có trật tự và kỷ luật. Bằng cách này, họ có thể phát triển thêm hiểu biết về Phật pháp và tận hưởng tâm trí minh mẫn tương tự như hạnh phúc của tuổi thanh xuân. Giới luật của cư sĩ giống như chín giới đầu tiên của giới Sramanera, giới luật thứ sáu và thứ bảy được gộp lại để tạo thành tổng cộng tám giới. Theo thông lệ ở các quốc gia Phật giáo, người ta tuân thủ những giới luật này vào những ngày rằm và mồng một Âm lịch. Giới luật đóng cánh cửa dẫn ta đến chốn khổ (apaya-bhumi) và mở cánh cửa đến cõi trời và cõi hiền nhân.
