BA THỪA BỒ-ĐỀ

Ở đây, có một người lạc lối trong rừng hoang đầy nguy hiểm, chợt cảm thấy an ổn. Do bởi đâu? Điều chắc chắn là khi nhận biết ra ta đang ở đâu, chung quanh này, gần đây hay xa hơn, có những gì. Vậy thì, sự thực quá hiển nhiên, cái làm cho người ấy cảm thấy an toàn, và tất nhiên cùng lúc với cảm giác sung sướng, đó chính là sự hiểu biết. Nhận rõ được sự thực, nhận biết thực tế ta đang ở đâu, ta đang làm gì, và nếu đó là nhận thức cứu cánh, nghĩa là biết rõ sự sống và sự chết, biết rõ sau đời này, sau khi thân thể này mục rã, ta sẽ là gì, ở đâu, biết một cách chắc chắn, tự mình biết, tự mình thấy, chứ không do ai khác; nhận thức ấy được gọi là giác ngộ, hay bồ-đề. Tuy vậy, nhận thức và giác ngộ là hai giai đoạn diễn ra trước sau như một quá trình nhân quả. Do nhận thức chính xác mà đạt được giác ngộ.

Nếu nói theo ngôn ngữ kinh điển, giác ngộ hay bồ-đề xuất hiện do bởi sự phát sinh của hai loại trí, tận trí và vô sinh trí. Tận trí, là nhận thức khởi lên, biết rằng ta đã dứt sạch các phiền não ô nhiễm; và cũng biết rõ rằng chúng vĩnh viễn không bao giờ sinh khởi trở lại, đây là vô sinh trí của A-la-hán. Bằng tận trí và vô sinh trí, A-la-hán tự tuyên bố: “Sự sinh của ta đã hết, phạm hạnh đã lập, điều cần làm đã làm xong, sau đời này không còn đời nào nữa.” Đó là cứu cánh của Thanh văn. Cứu cánh đó được gọi là bồ-đề của Thanh văn.

Cứu cánh của Thanh văn, mục đích tối thượng của các Thánh đệ tử, là đạt đến mức trí tuệ trong sáng, không bị che mờ bởi các phiền não khuấy động, do đó nhìn rõ sự thực của sống và chết. Mục đích này được mô tả sinh động trong kinh Tiễn Dụ. Một người bị trúng tên độc, việc cấp bách là nhổ mũi tên ra, và chữa trị vết thương, chứ không phải tìm hiểu mũi tên từ đâu bắn tới, làm bằng loại cây cỏ gì. Trong tình trạng như vậy, rõ ràng những vấn đề thế giới này hữu hạn hay vô hạn, thường hằng hay không thường hằng, những vấn đề như vậy hãy gác qua một bên. Tất nhiên vấn đề không phải chỉ dừng lại ở đó. Đức Phật đã từng nói, những điều ta biết nhiều như lá trong rừng cây mà những điều ta giảng dạy cho các đệ tử chỉ như nắm lá trong lòng tay. Cho nên, nhu cầu giải thoát thực trạng khổ đau là một thực tế nhân sinh, nhưng nhu cầu hiểu biết tiền tế hậu tế, hiểu cái vô thủy và vô chung của vũ trụ, cũng là một thực tế không thể chối bỏ của nhân sinh. Có những chúng sinh chỉ mong nhanh chóng đạt được giải thoát, sạch hết phiền não, thân tâm trong sáng như hư không, để sau khi trút bỏ sắc thân bèo bọt này, không còn tiếp tục thọ thân nào khác nữa. Nhưng cũng có chúng sinh ước nguyện hơn thế dù phải kéo thêm nhiều đời nhiều kiếp nữa với những thọ thân đầy khổ lụy này, mà cứu cánh là thành Phật.

Nếu khi ta nghe các luận sư Đại thừa nói rằng mỗi chúng sinh sinh ra đều được mã hóa với ba chủng tánh bồ-đề: chủng tánh bồ-đề Thanh văn, chủng tánh bồ-đề Độc giác, và chủng tánh bồ-đề Phật Chánh giác, mà điều này lại không tìm thấy trong các kinh điển được cho là nguyên thủy, đừng vội kết luận là những thêm thắt ngụy tạo. Lý luận của các luận sư này cũng chỉ đơn giản thôi: Tất nhiên phải có chúng sinh ước nguyện thành Phật; nếu không, thế gian này làm sao có Phật xuất hiện? Vả lại, thế giới không chỉ tồn tại với một quả đất này là duy nhất, mà trong vô tận không gian, hiện hữu vô số đại thiên thế giới; trong những thế giới đó há không có Phật? Thế giới vô tận, chư Phật Như Lai cũng vô lượng, và vì vậy chúng sinh phát nguyện thành Phật cũng vô số. Thêm nữa, trong các đệ tử của Phật, há không ai có ý tưởng mai sau sẽ đạt đến cứu cánh như vị Tôn Sư Chí Tôn của mình hiện tại, là Phật? Kinh điển nguyên thủy không bao giờ nói ngài Xá-lợi-phất muốn thành Phật, mà chỉ bằng lòng với sở đắc hiện tại, dù chính ngài cũng nhận thức rõ ràng rằng, như kinh điển cho thấy, trí tuệ của mình còn cách bậc Đại giác rất xa, quá xa vô lượng thế giới. Những vị Bồ-tát kết tập kinh Pháp Hoa cho rằng, há những bậc đệ tử thượng tôn như Xá-lợi-phất mà không ước nguyện thành, thì ai là người đủ tầm vóc để ước nguyện thừa kế di sản của Như Lai? Vì Phật cũng thường bảo các đệ tử: “Các ngươi hãy là người thừa kế trí tuệ của Ta, chứ đừng là những kẻ thừa kế tài vật của Ta.” Kế thừa trí tuệ của Như Lai, tất nhiên là thành Phật. Trong một hoàng triều mà các hoàng tử, những người có khả năng nhất, tài ba lỗi lạc nhất, lại không muốn thừa kế di sản, thì cơ nghiệp của hoàng đế sẽ ra sao? Vì vậy, các vị kết tập Pháp Hoa khẳng định, ngài Xá-lợi-phất nhất định có ước nguyện thành Phật để kế thừa sự nghiệp Như Lai, và nhất định sẽ thành Phật.

Why would a man who has been lost in a dangerous jungle suddenly feel unworried? It is certain that he might find out where he is and what is around him, near and far. Thus, all that can make him feel safe and, at the same time, pleased is his own knowledge of the situation in which he is caught up. Similarly, if we can, on our own, know exactly where we are, and what we are doing, and where we are destined to go in the next life, and what we would become after our bodies are destroyed, we have attained a kind of knowledge called bodhi or enlightenment in Buddhism. Nevertheless, knowledge and enlightenment are considered to be two consecutive stages of a causal process; and the latter may be achieved thanks to the former alone.

In Buddhist texts, bodhi is said to manifest itself on the basis of two types of knowledge: kṣayajñāna and anutpādajñāna[1]. It is by means of them that an arhat[2] proclaims that his rebirth comes to an end, his holy life has been carried out, what needs to be done has been fulfilled, and there is no more life after this life. It is the aim of śrāvakas[3], or rather, śrāvaka-bodhi.

The goal of śrāvakas or the ultimate aim of the noble immediate disciples of the Buddha is to achieve pure wisdom, which is not clouded by all kinds of afflictions, and thus to gain a deep insight into the reality of birth and death. The goal is picturesquely described in the Arrow Sūtra: For a person who is injured with a poisoned arrow, what should be done on the spot is not to investigate where the arrow is shot from or what it is made of, but to pull it out and treat the wound immediately. In such a situation, it is obvious that the questions as to whether the world is finite or infinite, permanent or impermanent, must be neglected.

In reality, the matter should not be considered so simple. The Buddha ever said that what he knew was as much as the leaves in a forest, and what he taught was like a handful of them. Therefore, the need for liberation from suffering is a fact in human life; but the need for understanding the no-beginning and the no-ending of the universe, which has become an undeniable fact in human life, too, is not less indispensable. Some people want to eliminate all the afflictions and liberate themselves from suffering as soon as possible so that they would no longer get any more bodies after abandoning their current ones. Otherwise, some want to achieve Buddhahood even though they have to suffer innumerable lives in their unpleasant bodies. If the doctrine that every sentient being is endowed with three kinds of bodhi, viz., Śrāvakabodhi, Pratyekabodhi, and Samyaksaṃbodhi, is said not to be found in the so-called original texts, it should not be interpreted as being falsely invented by Mahāyāna exegetists. Their grounds are not too difficult to understand: there are really some sentient beings who have taken a vow to attain the consummate enlightenment of a buddha; for, without them, who is the Buddha who would come into existence in the world?

Cosmologically, the universe consists of not only our earth, but a countless number of worlds in which, who may say that there would not be any Buddha found. The universe is infinite, the buddhas are innumerable; and so are sentient beings who take a vow to achieve Buddhahood. In addition, is it true that not any immediate disciple among the Buddha’s did generate the aspiration to the supreme enlightenment that he achieved? In the early Buddhist texts, Śāriputra is said not to have made any decision of achieving Buddhahood. He was, instead, allegedly satisfied with his own achievements even though he realized that he had not yet been so perfectly enlightened as the Buddha. Those who compiled the Lotus Sūtra, however, set forth the question as to who would have enough qualifications to inherit the Tathāgata’s career apart from his most qualified disciples like Śāriputra. For the Buddha ever told his disciples that they should have inherited his wisdom, but not his material heritage. To inherit his wisdom has connotations of achieving supreme knowledge and becoming a buddha. Just as a king whose sons refuse to follow his career will eventually lose all of his achievements, how could the Buddha’s teaching as a whole be experienced and realized and spread at its utmost if his followers refuse to attain the perfect enlightenment he ever did? So, the compilers of the Lotus Sūtra come to the conclusion that Śāriputra did take a vow to achieve Buddhahood for preserving the Tathāgata’s career, and that he must have been successful.
