Seventy-five years have passed since the name Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam was unified, and half a century since GĐPTVN established its presence in the United States. Looking back, its history resembles a river flowing through many different terrains. At times it moves peacefully across open plains; at others it descends through steep and rugged rapids. In some places the current must divide into separate branches; elsewhere it quietly sinks beneath the earth, only to reappear in a distant land. As the terrain of each era differs, so too does the character of the sacrifice and devoted service offered by each generation. Thus, the meritorious contributions of those who came before and those who followed cannot be measured as greater or lesser, more or less; for each of our Brothers and Sisters was present precisely where history placed them, shouldered the responsibilities entrusted to them by their time, and quietly contributed a drop of their own life to the ever-flowing Blue River.
Each of those drops, taken by itself, may seem small. Yet because they know how to join one another, they become a current; because they follow one another, they gather strength; because they are willing to let go of their own names, they are able to carry the waters forward. The history of a Buddhist educational organization, in the final analysis, is built not only upon major events, titles, or documents that have been preserved, but also upon countless unnamed years: a study session faithfully maintained, a younger member supported and guided, a difficult period endured without abandoning the Blue Shirt, a decision to step back so that the common work might move forward. Such merit makes little noise, yet endures more deeply than anything else. It does not seek to display itself before the eyes, but quietly casts its beneficent influence through the collective memory of the community and through the character of the generations that receive its legacy.
Along that river, Huynh trưởng Cấp Dũng Nguyên Thanh – Nguyễn Văn Hà has traveled a path long enough that the years of his life are no longer merely a number, but have become the imprint of a lifetime of service. If Cấp Dũng is regarded only as a rank, its meaning becomes far too narrow. For the true worth of a Huynh trưởng does not lie in how high a rank one has attained, but in how much of the original aspiration remains pure after passing through so many vicissitudes; in how much fidelity to the Dharma, to the Organization, and to the younger members who once placed their trust in him still endures through all the changes of time. What is worthy of reverence in a senior Huynh trưởng, therefore, is not that he stands above those who came later, but that he has stood at the very front of the wind, so that those behind him might have a measure of shelter in which to continue their journey.
To respectfully celebrate your longevity today is, for us younger members, also an occasion to bow before a bed of alluvium along the river of GĐPT Việt Nam. Alluvium does not speak of itself; it simply and quietly enriches the riverbanks. Merit is much the same. Once it has entered deeply into the life of the Organization, words of praise become secondary. What remains is for succeeding generations to recognize that the ground upon which they now stand has been patiently built up by countless hands before them. A life in the Blue Shirt tradition is cherished most deeply not because one has made one’s name resound greatly, but because one has helped the river travel farther after one’s own passage through it.
May your years ahead be blessed with serenity, and may your Dharma-mind grow ever more lucid and peaceful. In the evening light of a long journey, may the sound of the source-stream still be heard within your heart. And may the drops of water that have gathered alongside you throughout these many years continue to join, sustain, and carry one another forward—so that the Blue River, from the homeland to lands overseas, from one generation to the next, however varied the terrains of history through which it must pass, may always preserve one true direction: toward the source of the Dharma, toward the educational ideal, and toward that place where one knows how to offer oneself in service without any need for one’s name to be proclaimed.
Namo Ever-Joyful Bodhisattva Mahāsattva.
