Mỗi mùa hè đến, khi nắng bắt đầu dịu và những cơn mưa đầu mùa rơi lách tách trên mái chùa, là lúc chư Tăng khắp nơi cùng bước vào mùa An Cư Kiết Hạ – một mùa rất đặc biệt trong đạo Phật. Đó không phải là kỳ nghỉ hè, mà là khoảng thời gian quý báu để các thầy ở yên một nơi, cùng nhau học đạo, giữ giới, và nuôi lớn tâm từ bi.
Vậy “an cư” có nghĩa là gì? Tại sao lại gọi là “kiết hạ”? Và liệu các em – những chú sen non trên con đường học Phật – có thể an cư được không?
Hôm nay, chúng ta sẽ cùng theo chân Sư Ông Lá Sen và ba chú tiểu nhỏ tên Búp, Sen và Mít trong một mùa mưa thật đặc biệt… nơi mà những hạt mưa không chỉ rơi ngoài sân chùa, mà còn thấm vào tận trái tim các chú, nuôi dưỡng sự an vui, tỉnh thức.

Dear little ones,
Every summer, when the sun begins to soften and the first drops of rain tap gently on the temple roof, monks everywhere enter a very special time in Buddhism called the Rains Retreat.
It’s not a holiday—it’s a precious season when all the monks stay in one place to study, practice mindfulness, and strengthen their kindness and discipline.
But what does “rains retreat” really mean? Why do the monks stop traveling? And can you—our young little lotuses on the path of the Dharma—join the retreat too?
Today, we’ll follow the footsteps of Venerable Lotus Leaf and three little novices named Bup, Sen, and Mit through a very special rainy season…
A season when the rain doesn’t just fall outside the monastery—it also waters the seeds of peace and mindfulness deep in their hearts.

Ngày xửa ngày xưa, trong khu rừng yên tĩnh, có một vị sư già hiền từ tên là Sư Ông Lá Sen. Mỗi sáng, Sư Ông thức dậy từ sớm, ngồi thiền dưới gốc cây, chăm sóc vườn rau, và dạy các chú tiểu học đạo.
Once upon a time, in a quiet forest, there lived a kind old monk named Venerable Lotus Leaf. Every morning, he would rise early to meditate beneath the Bodhi tree, tend to his vegetable garden, and teach the young novices the way of the Dharma.
Năm ấy, khi trời bắt đầu chuyển sang mùa mưa, các chú tiểu tò mò hỏi:
Búp: – Sư Ông ơi, sao năm nào đến hè, thầy cũng không đi đâu hết vậy?
Sen: – Con thấy mưa ướt hết đường, mình đi trì bình chắc té mất!
That year, when the rainy season began to arrive, the little novices grew curious.
Bup: Venerable Sir, how come you never go anywhere during summer?
Sen: If we walk outside in the rain, we might slip while doing alms round!
Sư Ông: – Đó là vì đến mùa An Cư Kiết Hạ rồi, các con ạ. Đây là thời gian đặc biệt để chư Tăng ở yên một chỗ, cùng nhau tu học tinh tấn suốt ba tháng mùa mưa.
Mít: – Ở yên một chỗ mà cũng tu được ạ?
Venerable: Ah, that’s because the Rains Retreat has begun, dear ones. It’s a special time when all monks stay in one place to practice together diligently for three whole months during the rainy season.
Mit: Can you really practice well just by staying in one place?
Sư Ông: – Thuở xưa, Đức Phật và chư Tăng thường đi khất thực khắp nơi. Nhưng mùa mưa, đường trơn trượt, lội nước dễ dẫm lên côn trùng. Nên Đức Phật dạy, vào mùa mưa, hãy ở yên một nơi, để không hại sinh linh và có thời gian quán chiếu, học hỏi, và sống chung trong hòa kính.
Venerable: A long time ago, the Buddha and his disciples would travel far and wide for alms. But during the rainy season, the roads became slippery and muddy, and it was easy to step on tiny creatures. So the Buddha taught us: in the rainy season, stay in one place—to avoid harming life, to reflect deeply, to learn, and to live in harmony.
Sư Ông: – Trong ba tháng ấy, ai cũng cố gắng sửa mình, giữ giới, học pháp, sống thương yêu nhau. Mỗi ngày đều là cơ hội tu hành.
Sen: – Vậy tụi con có được an cư không, thầy?
Sư Ông (cười): – Có chứ! Nếu các con biết ở yên, chăm chỉ học đạo, không chạy nhảy lung tung, đó cũng là An Cư của trái tim!
Venerable: During these three months, everyone tries their best to improve themselves—keeping precepts, learning the Dharma, and living with loving-kindness. Each day is a precious chance to cultivate the path.
Sen: Can we join the Rains Retreat too, Venerable?
Venerable (smiling): Of course! If you can sit still, study diligently, and not run around, that is also a Rains Retreat—in your heart.
Từ hôm ấy, ba chú tiểu cố gắng tu tập chăm chỉ. Dù mưa rơi ngoài sân, lòng các chú vẫn an vui như ánh nắng trong tâm.
From that day on, the little novices tried their best to practice. Even as the rain fell outside, their hearts felt bright and peaceful—just like sunshine within.
Hết ba tháng, mọi người cùng làm lễ Tự tứ – ai có lỗi lầm thì vui lòng nhận lời nhắc nhở, để cùng nhau tiến bộ. Tình huynh đệ càng thêm thắm thiết.
After three months, everyone gathered for the Pavarana Ceremony—where they kindly accepted reminders from one another to help improve. Brotherly love grew stronger than ever.
An cư là để tâm an,
hạ tịnh là để lòng sáng.
Thế là mùa An Cư trôi qua, không chỉ giúp các thầy thêm đạo hạnh, mà các chú tiểu cũng học được bài học quý giá: ở yên để lớn lên trong chánh niệm.
Staying in place brings peace to the heart.
Summer retreat brings light to the soul.
And so the Rains Retreat came to an end. Not only did the monks grow in virtue, but the young novices also learned a precious lesson: Be still to grow strong in mindfulness.
