Mới đó mà nửa thế kỷ trôi qua, bất chợt nhìn lại, ngỡ như mới hôm nào mình vẫn bên nhau trong một buổi lửa Trại trên đồi thông, hay những giờ ngồi thiền tịnh niệm ở một tu viện, trung tâm Tu học trong thành phố. Tiếng gọi Anh Chị em cùng họp đoàn vẫn thân thương, nhiều cảm mến còn vang vọng bên tai.
Năm nay, 2026, GĐPT Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ tổ chức Đại hội Huynh trưởng kỳ 12 và Lễ hội kỷ niệm 50 năm xây dựng và phát triển để nối kết tập thể áo Lam với nhau, cùng vui chung trong ngày hội lớn và nhắm đến hướng tiến cho tương lai của tổ chức. Trong vận hội này, chúng ta sẽ cùng ôn lại những kỷ niệm thân thương của một đoạn đường dài bên nhau, và cũng như hoạch định các sinh hoạt sắp tới cho thế hệ kế thừa.
Chuyến xe kỷ niệm đưa tôi về ngôi chùa thân thương ở San Francisco, với đơn vị Cựu Kim Sơn, trong một buổi sinh hoạt cuối tuần năm 1977. Anh Minh Dũng Phú tòan Cương, chị Thuyền Vị Nguyễn thị Ngà cũng như một số Huynh trưởng vừa định cư ở Hoa kỳ, cùng họp mặt với mục đích xây lại mái nhà Lam trên xứ người. Thô sơ, gắn bó, và hết sức tin tưởng vào châm ngôn Bi Trí Dũng. Tôi gia nhập đơn vị, để tìm lại khung cảnh ấm cúng của ngày nào trên quê hương với những người bạn Lam, giờ thì đã xa nhau nửa quả địa cầu, không biết có cơ may đoàn tụ bên nhau hay không. Những ngày đó, giúp tôi nhận ra một thứ tình cảm sâu sắc, đầy ắp thương yêu và xây dựng cho tuổi trẻ.
Sau một thời gian ngắn, tôi quyết định chọn con đường xuất gia, nhưng trong lòng luôn nhớ đến quý Anh chị Huynh trưởng và một số Đoàn sinh của thời đó. Anh Minh Dũng không còn, nhưng hình ảnh của đơn vị Thiện Tâm, do Anh đứng tên sáng lập sau này ở vùng San Jose, vẫn là hình ảnh đẹp đẽ mà tôi luôn ghi nhớ trong lòng.
Tiếp một chặng đường nữa, khoảng 20 năm sau, với đơn vị Chánh Tâm và Chánh Đức trong hệ thống của miền Thiện Minh, trải qua một thời điểm đặc biệt trên dòng lịch sử, dù gặp nhiều sóng gió và có lắm thử thách, tôi cũng may mắn gặp những Huynh trưởng thật sự vì Tổ chức, và qua đó, tôi cũng biết được những hy sinh quý báu, cũng như thâu lượm vài ba bài học về hạnh Kiên nhẫn, Cảm thông… cho đến, những năm gần đây, qua việc tổ chức ngày Truyền Thống hàng năm ở miền Bắc Cali này. Hai miền Liễu Quán và Thiện Minh, cùng với Liên đoàn Huệ Năng Cựu Huynh trưởng cùng nắm tay, góp ý, góp sức để nuôi dưỡng Tổ chức, đem lại sức sống cho toàn thể Lam viên trong vùng. Tôi hết lòng biết ơn quý Anh Chị Huynh trưởng các cấp đã thể hiện rõ nét tinh thần Bất khả phân, làm việc theo Quyết định chung của tập thể Huynh trưởng qua các kỳ Đại hội gần 20 năm qua, can đảm xác nhận là, dù trong hoàn cảnh khó khăn, dị biệt nào, chúng ta cũng luôn luôn cùng một màu Cờ, sắc Áo để làm nơi nương tựa, nuôi dưỡng Niềm tin cho Thế hệ trẻ – Huynh trưởng và Đoàn sinh sinh ra và lớn lên ở Mỹ.
Thái độ tương kính, tương thuận của người Huynh trưởng thật là đáng quý vô cùng trong hoàn cảnh hiện tại. Khi cùng nhìn về một hướng, có mục đích chung thì tình Lam sẽ được thể hiện một cách đẹp đẽ. Đến với nhau, chỉ với một tấm lòng vì Tổ chức, cho Đàn em và vui chung với Mọi người. Trong tâm niệm kết hợp để nuôi dưỡng tình Lam thân thương, bảo vệ Tổ chức được vẹn toàn trong khả năng và giới hạn của mình. Đó cũng là trách nhiệm của người Huynh trưởng trước hiện trạng trí tuệ nhân tạo đang phát triển mạnh mẽ, xã hội thay đổi không ngừng, chưa biết nhân lọai sẽ đi về đâu.
Với sự đóng góp không ngừng, những hy sinh lớn lao của hàng hàng lớp lớp Huynh trưởng qua bao nhiêu năm tháng đã chứng tỏ tổ chức GĐPT sẽ tiếp tục là hướng tiến cho Tuổi trẻ đi vào cuộc sống với Niềm tin trong sáng của đạo Phật và Lý tưởng sáng ngời cho thế hệ kế thừa đang cố gắng giữ gìn những nét Văn hóa tốt đẹp của Dân tộc Việt nam trên xứ người.
Và mới sáng hôm nay, trong mùa Phật đản 2026, đọc được tin các em Đoàn sinh đơn vị Chánh Hạnh ở Vacaville, đoạt giỏi thưởng xuất sắc, từ các sáng tác về bài học trong Bát Chánh đạo bằng tiếng Anh, đưa lên mạng xã hội cho mọi người thấy sức sống, lợi ích của Tổ chức GĐPT Việt nam đang có mặt trong cuộc sống hàng ngày. Mặc áo Lam, đeo huy hiệu Hoa Sen trắng, với khuôn mặt Tự tin, vui vẻ, các Em diễn tả và chia sẽ những kiến thức bổ ích của mình mà các em đã học được từ GĐPT cho các Bạn cùng lứa tuổi, có chung suy tư, hoàn cảnh trong xã hội hôm nay.
Kết nối hai Thế hệ trong tinh thần Tứ chúng đồng tu, cùng sinh hoạt bên nhau, chúng ta đã có những Nhân tố hết sức vững mạnh và lâu dài, đáp ứng cho những Hoài bảo sâu xa của quý Anh chị Huynh trưởng đã dày công với Tổ chức. Còn đối với Thế hệ kế thừa, được học hỏi từ Kinh nghiệm của những người đi trước và không ngừng học tập, lắng nghe những Sáng kiến mới, hợp với thời đại, cũng thấy mình có đủ Tự tin, Vui vẻ với sức sống trong hạnh Lục hòa, Tinh tấn trên đường đạo, cũng như sinh hoạt giữa cuộc đời.
Mai đây, tôi sẽ cùng với Huynh trưởng Chánh Hòa về tham dự Đại hội, trong lòng có một niềm tin tưởng sâu xa, là, dù dòng thời gian tiếp tục, âm thầm trôi qua 50 năm nữa, tình Lam của chúng ta vẫn luôn đậm nét Thương yêu, đầy Cảm thông, nhiều Tin tưởng và Vui vẻ bên nhau.

50 Years: Deepening the Spirit of Lam Brotherhood
Half a century has passed in what feels like the blink of an eye. Looking back now, it seems as though it was only yesterday that we were gathered together around a campfire on a pine-covered hill, or sitting quietly in meditation at a monastery or Dharma center in the city. The familiar call, “Brothers and Sisters, let us gather,” still echoes warmly in my ears, carrying with it countless memories and affections.
This year, 2026, the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in the United States (GĐPTVN-USA) will convene its 12th National Leadership Congress and celebrate the 50th Anniversary of its establishment and development. This milestone event brings together members of the Lam family across the country to rejoice in our shared heritage and to look toward the future of the organization. It is an opportunity to revisit the cherished memories of our long journey together while also planning the activities and direction for the generations that will follow us.
The vehicle of memory carries me back to a beloved temple in San Francisco, where the Kim Sơn Unit gathered on a weekend in 1977. Brother Minh Dũng Phú Toàn Cương, Sister Thuyền Vị Nguyễn Thị Ngà, and several other leaders who had recently resettled in the United States came together with a single purpose: to rebuild the Lam family on foreign soil. Those early days were simple, closely knit, and sustained by an unwavering faith in the ideals of Compassion, Wisdom, and Courage. I joined the unit in hopes of rediscovering the warmth and fellowship I had known in Vietnam among fellow members who were now scattered across the globe, uncertain whether we would ever have the chance to reunite. Those days helped me recognize a profound kind of affection—one filled with love, dedication, and a sincere commitment to nurturing young people.
After a relatively short period, I decided to pursue the monastic path. Yet I have always carried in my heart the memory of the leaders and youth members from those early years. Brother Minh Dũng has since passed away, but the image of Thiện Tâm Unit, which he later founded in the San Jose area, remains a beautiful and enduring memory that I continue to treasure.
Another chapter unfolded some twenty years later through Chánh Tâm and Chánh Đức Units within the Thiện Minh Region. Passing through a particularly challenging period in our organizational history, marked by many difficulties and trials, I was fortunate to encounter leaders who were genuinely devoted to the organization. Through them, I came to understand the depth of sacrifice that sustains our movement and to learn invaluable lessons in patience, understanding, and perseverance. In more recent years, these experiences have continued through the annual Traditional Day gatherings in Northern California. The Liễu Quán and Thiện Minh Regions, together with the Huệ Năng Federation of Former Leaders, have joined hands in mutual support and cooperation, nurturing the organization and bringing renewed vitality to Lam members throughout the region.
I am deeply grateful to leaders at every level who have embodied the spirit of indivisibility and unity. For nearly twenty years, they have faithfully upheld the collective decisions reached through our national congresses. They have had the courage to affirm that regardless of difficulties or differences, we remain united under the same flag and the same gray shirt, providing a place of refuge and confidence for younger generations—both leaders and youth members who were born and raised here in America.
The spirit of mutual respect and harmony among leaders is especially precious in the present age. When we share a common vision and a common purpose, the beauty of Lam fellowship naturally reveals itself. We come together with sincere hearts for the sake of the organization, for the younger generation, and for the joy of serving alongside one another. Through this commitment, we nurture our beloved Lam spirit and protect the integrity of the organization to the best of our abilities and within the limits of our circumstances. This, too, is part of the responsibility of today’s leaders as we face a rapidly changing world shaped by artificial intelligence and unprecedented social transformation, uncertain of where humanity may ultimately be heading.
The countless contributions and tremendous sacrifices made by generations of leaders over the decades have demonstrated that the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association will continue to offer a meaningful path forward for young people. It provides them with a life grounded in the pure faith of Buddhism and inspired by noble ideals, while helping future generations preserve the finest cultural values of the Vietnamese people in their adopted homeland.
Just this morning, during the 2026 Vesak season, I read the wonderful news that youth members of Chánh Hạnh Unit in Vacaville received top honors for their creative presentations on lessons from the Noble Eightfold Path, delivered in English and shared through social media. Their work offered a vivid demonstration of the vitality and relevance of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in everyday life. Wearing the gray GĐPT uniform and the White Lotus emblem, with confidence and joy shining on their faces, these young members shared the beneficial teachings they had learned through GĐPT with friends of their own age who face similar questions and challenges in today’s society.
By connecting generations within the spirit of the Fourfold Buddhist Community practicing together, we have cultivated a foundation that is both strong and enduring, capable of fulfilling the deepest aspirations of the many leaders who have dedicated their lives to this organization. For the younger generation, learning from the experience of those who came before while remaining open to new ideas suited to contemporary realities provides both confidence and joy. Through the practice of harmony, diligence, and continuous learning, they can move forward on the Buddhist path while engaging meaningfully with the world around them.
Soon, I will travel with Leader Chánh Hòa to attend the Congress. Deep within my heart rests a profound confidence that even as time continues its quiet passage and another fifty years unfold, our Lam spirit will remain rich with love, filled with understanding, strengthened by trust, and sustained by the joy of being together.
