Tâm-Quảng-Nhuận: Phật Đản Trên Dòng Sử Việt | Vesak Along the Course of Vietnamese History

Trong chiều dài lịch sử dân tộc, mỗi mùa trăng Vesak đi qua đều như một lần đánh thức ký ức chung của một dân tộc từng lấy từ bi làm nền tảng tinh thần để đứng dậy giữa những đổ nát chiến tranh, chia lìa ý thức hệ và những cơn chấn động của thời cuộc. Từ ngọn lửa tự thiêu của Bồ Tát Thích Quảng Đức năm 1963, cho đến sự ra đời của Giáo Hội Phật Giáo Việt Nam Thống Nhất năm 1964, lịch sử Phật giáo Việt Nam hiện đại chưa từng tách rời khỏi thân phận dân tộc. Đó không phải là lịch sử của quyền lực, mà là lịch sử của sự chịu đựng, hy hiến và gìn giữ phẩm giá tâm linh của một dân tộc trước mọi hình thái bạo lực tinh thần.

Vì lẽ này, khi đón nhận Thông bạch Đại lễ Phật Đản Phật lịch 2570 của Viện Tăng Thống GHPGVNTN, chúng ta đọc mà không đơn thuần chỉ nhìn thấy một văn kiện tổ chức lễ nghi hành chánh. Theo đó, nơi những dòng chữ trang nghiêm ấy là cả một quá trình sử lịch được đúc kết bằng máu, nước mắt, đạo tình và chí nguyện bảo tồn mạng mạch Phật giáo Việt Nam suốt hơn nửa thế kỷ dâu bể. Từ trong khung cảnh Phật Đản hôm nay, Giáo hội đã nhắc lại sự kiện đản sinh của Đức Thế Tôn đồng thời cũng nhắc lại hành trình gìn giữ ánh sáng giác ngộ giữa những thời đại mà bóng tối nhiều lần phủ xuống vận mệnh dân tộc và đạo pháp.

Bằng phẩm chất từ hòa, văn phong điềm tĩnh của truyền thống Phật giáo Việt Nam, chúng ta cảm nhận một sức nặng tinh thần rất lớn khi Thông bạch nhắc lại sự kiện “Phật giáo ba miền Nam – Trung – Bắc hòa hợp, thống nhất thành lập Tổng Hội Phật Giáo Việt Nam (1951)” rồi tiếp nối bằng sự hình thành GHPGVNTN như một biểu tượng cho “thành tựu của phong trào chấn hưng Phật giáo”, điều này một lần nữa xác định rằng sự thống nhất của Phật giáo Việt Nam không phải là một cấu trúc hành chánh nhất thời, đó là kết tinh của một khát vọng lịch sử lâu dài về sự hòa hợp dân tộc, hòa hợp tông môn và bảo vệ quyền tồn tại độc lập của đạo pháp.

Đặc biệt hơn, ngay bây giờ, khi nhớ lại ca từ của tác giả Huynh trưởng Lê Cao Phan trong nhạc phẩm “Phật Giáo Việt Nam”, mở ra một ý nghĩa vô cùng sâu sắc cho hàng ngũ GĐPTVN hôm nay. Bởi, đây không đơn giản chỉ là một bài nhạc lễ ca vang trong những buổi chào Phật kỳ, mà sau hơn 60 năm lịch sử, điều này đã trở thành một ký ức tinh thần. Một lời nhắc nhở về sự tồn tại của Phật giáo Việt Nam vốn không bao giờ là điều tự nhiên hiển nhiên. Sự thống nhất ấy tồn tại được là nhờ có những thế hệ đã âm thầm hy sinh gánh lấy trách nhiệm lịch sử trong những hoàn cảnh mà rất nhiều giá trị bị áp lực, phân hóa hay rã tan.

Nhưng ở đây, Thông bạch của Viện Tăng Thống cũng cho thấy một điều rất đặc biệt của GHPGVNTN, đó chính là Giáo hội không tự xem mình như một cơ chế quyền lực. Giáo hội nhìn mình như một sự tiếp nối của mạng mạch. Chính nội hàm “mạng mạch” ấy làm nên chiều sâu đặc thù. Vì mạng mạch không thể tồn tại chỉ bằng văn kiện hay tổ chức. Giáo hội tồn tại bằng ký ức lịch sử, bằng đạo hạnh Bản thể Tăng già, bằng niềm tin của quần chúng Phật tử và nhất là, bằng sự dấn thân của những thế hệ trẻ kế thừa.

Cho nên, đối với hàng ngũ Huynh trưởng GĐPTVN, Thông bạch này vừa là lời mời tham dự Đại lễ Phật Đản, cùng lúc như một tiếng chuông thức tỉnh trách nhiệm lịch sử của tuổi trẻ Phật giáo Việt Nam trong lẫn ngoài nước.

Một thế hệ lớn lên ở hải ngoại hôm nay có thể không còn trực tiếp trải nghiệm những biến động dữ dội của Pháp nạn 1963, của những năm tháng tranh đấu bảo vệ quyền sống của đạo pháp hay những thăng trầm mà Giáo hội đã trải qua sau 1975. Nhưng lịch sử không vì khoảng cách địa lý mà mất đi trọng lượng. Trái lại, chính trong bối cảnh lưu vong văn hóa và tan loãng căn tính hiện nay, vấn đề giữ gìn một truyền thống Phật giáo Việt Nam mang chiều sâu dân tộc và trí tuệ lại trở nên cấp thiết hơn bao giờ hết.

Thông bạch nhắc đến bao chướng duyên, nghịch cảnh mà GHPGVNTN vẫn nguyện bảo tồn, nhưng không than trách và không bi lụy. Chỉ một cụm từ ngắn gọn ấy thôi cũng đủ để chúng ta hiểu rằng phía sau sự tồn tại lặng lẽ của Giáo hội hôm nay là cả một thực trạng đầy khó khăn. Đó chính là bản lĩnh rất đặc biệt của Phật giáo Việt Nam truyền thống, chịu đựng mà không nuôi dưỡng hận thù; gìn giữ mà không cực đoan; tồn tại nhưng không đánh mất phẩm hạnh từ bi.

Và chính vì vậy, sức tác động tinh thần của Thông bạch càng trở nên mạnh mẽ, vì đặt ra cho GĐPTVN một câu hỏi lớn: nếu mạng mạch ấy tiếp tục tồn tại, thì ai sẽ là người kế thừa?

Không phải ngẫu nhiên mà Thông bạch nhiều lần nhắc trực tiếp đến Huynh trưởng và Đoàn sinh GĐPTVN trong và ngoài nước. Điều đó cho thấy một hoài bão của Viện Tăng Thống, GĐPT không đơn thuần chỉ là một đoàn thể sinh hoạt thanh thiếu niên. Ở đó là thành phần hữu cơ trong tiến trình bảo tồn và tiếp nối lý tưởng Phật giáo Việt Nam. Một thế hệ Huynh trưởng biết giữ phẩm hạnh, giữ lý tưởng phụng sự và giữ tinh thần vô úy chính là thành trì vững vàng của Phật giáo Việt Nam giữa thời đại biến động.

Điều cần thiết hôm nay không phải là khơi dậy nơi tuổi trẻ một tâm thức nặng về phản ứng hay phân cực, mà là nuôi lớn chiều sâu nhận thức, lòng từ và bản lĩnh nội tâm để đủ khả năng gìn giữ đạo pháp giữa những biến động của thời đại. Bởi điều Phật giáo Việt Nam cần hơn hết là xây dựng một thế hệ đủ chiều sâu nhận thức để hiểu vì sao cha anh mình đã đi qua một hành trình lịch sử đầy gian nan như vậy mà vẫn không đánh mất lòng từ. Đủ bình tĩnh để thấy rằng bảo vệ đạo pháp không phải bằng sự cuồng nộ, mà bằng trí tuệ, nhân cách và khả năng đứng vững giữa những áp lực của thời đại. Đủ tha thiết với dân tộc và văn hóa Việt Nam để không tan biến trong đời sống tiêu thụ toàn cầu hóa.

Trong chiều sâu ấy, mùa Phật Đản không những chỉ là lễ đài, cờ hoa hay nghi thức mà thật sự trở thành một ký ức tập thể của dân tộc Phật giáo Việt Nam. Một lời nhắc nhớ về ánh sáng đản sinh năm xưa nơi vườn Lâm Tỳ Ni vốn không dành cho sự cầu an cá nhân. Ánh sáng ấy từng đi qua những ngọn lửa tranh đấu, những mái chùa đổ nát, những cuộc chia ly lịch sử và những thế hệ âm thầm giữ đạo giữa bóng tối.

Song, điều bi tráng nhất của Phật giáo Việt Nam không nằm ở những biến cố từng xảy ra, mà nằm ở chỗ, sau tất cả những thăng trầm ấy, chúng ta vẫn còn nghe vang lên bài ca “Phật Giáo Việt Nam” trong các lễ đài Phật Đản, vẫn còn nhìn thấy màu áo lam của GĐPT tiếp tục hiện diện giữa quê nhà và xứ người, vẫn còn những thế hệ trẻ cúi đầu trước Tam bảo bằng tất cả lòng kính tin trong trẻo.

Chính điều đó mới là dấu hiệu cho thấy một truyền thống bất diệt.

Và cũng chính điều đó làm cho Thông bạch Phật Đản năm nay của Hòa thượng Chánh Thư Ký Xử Lý Viện Tăng Thống Giáo Hội Phật Giáo Việt Nam Thống Nhất – Hòa thượng Thích Đức Thắng – vẫn mang sức lay động tinh thần rất sâu đậm đối với những ai còn thao thức với vận mệnh của Phật giáo Việt Nam, và con đường tiếp nối của GĐPTVN trong thế kỷ này.

Vesak Along the Course of Vietnamese History

Across the long course of the nation’s history, each Vesak moon seems to awaken once again the shared memory of a people who once drew upon compassion as their spiritual foundation in order to rise from the ruins of war, ideological division, and the upheavals of turbulent times. From the self-immolation of Bodhisattva Thích Quảng Đức in 1963 to the founding of the Unified Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam (GHPGVNTN) in 1964, the history of modern Vietnamese Buddhism has never been separated from the destiny of the nation itself. This has never been a history of power, but rather a history of endurance, sacrifice, and the preservation of spiritual dignity before every form of violence inflicted upon the human spirit.

For this reason, when receiving the Vesak Proclamation for Buddhist Era 2570 issued by the Institute of the Sangha Leadership of the GHPGVNTN, one does not merely encounter an administrative ceremonial document. Beneath its solemn words lies an entire historical journey forged through blood, tears, spiritual fellowship, and the vow to preserve the living lifeline of Vietnamese Buddhism through more than half a century of upheaval. Within the sacred atmosphere of Vesak today, the Sangha not only recalls the birth of the Blessed One, but also the long journey of safeguarding the light of awakening throughout periods when darkness repeatedly descended upon the fate of both the nation and the Dharma.

Through the gentle spirit and composed language characteristic of the Vietnamese Buddhist tradition, one feels an immense spiritual gravity when the Proclamation recalls the historic moment in which “the Buddhists of the North, Central, and South united to establish the General Buddhist Association of Vietnam (1951),” followed by the formation of the GHPGVNTN as a symbol of “the achievements of the Buddhist revival movement.” This once again affirms that the unity of Vietnamese Buddhism was never a temporary administrative structure, but the crystallization of a long historical aspiration toward national harmony, sectarian reconciliation, and the protection of the independent existence of the Dharma.

More profoundly still, when recalling the lyrics written by GĐPT Leader Lê Cao Phan in the hymn Vietnamese Buddhism, an extraordinarily deep meaning unfolds for the GĐPTVN of today. For this is far more than a ceremonial song sung during Buddhist flag salutes. After more than sixty years of history, it has become a spiritual memory in itself — a reminder that the existence of Vietnamese Buddhism has never been something naturally guaranteed or self-evident. That unity has endured only because generations before us silently accepted sacrifice and carried the burden of historical responsibility through periods in which so many values were subjected to pressure, fragmentation, and disintegration.

Yet here, the Proclamation of the Institute of the Sangha Leadership also reveals something deeply distinctive about the GHPGVNTN: the Sangha does not regard itself as a mechanism of power. Rather, it understands itself as the continuation of a living spiritual lifeline. It is precisely this notion of “lifeline” that gives the Sangha its unique depth. For such a lifeline cannot survive through documents or institutions alone. The Sangha endures through historical memory, through the spiritual integrity of the Sangha itself, through the faith of the Buddhist faithful, and above all through the commitment of younger generations willing to continue the path.

Thus, for the ranks of GĐPT leaders and youth members, this Proclamation is not only an invitation to participate in Vesak celebrations, but also a bell awakening a sense of historical responsibility within the younger generations of Vietnamese Buddhism, both within Vietnam and throughout the diaspora.

A generation raised overseas today may no longer directly experience the fierce upheavals of the 1963 Buddhist Crisis, the years of struggle to protect the very right of the Dharma to exist, or the many hardships the Sangha endured after 1975. Yet history does not lose its weight because of geographical distance. On the contrary, amid today’s conditions of cultural exile and the gradual erosion of identity, the task of preserving a Vietnamese Buddhist tradition rooted in both national depth and wisdom has become more urgent than ever before.

The Proclamation speaks briefly of the countless adversities and obstacles that the GHPGVNTN still vows to preserve itself through, yet without complaint or bitterness. That single phrase alone is enough to reveal that behind the Sangha’s quiet existence today lies an immensely difficult reality. And therein lies the distinctive strength of traditional Vietnamese Buddhism: to endure without nurturing hatred; to preserve without extremism; to survive without losing the virtues of compassion.

Precisely because of this, the spiritual impact of the Proclamation becomes even more profound, for it raises a fundamental question before GĐPT today: if this lifeline is to continue, who shall inherit it?

It is no coincidence that the Proclamation repeatedly addresses GĐPT leaders and youth members both within Vietnam and abroad. This reveals an aspiration held by the Institute of the Sangha Leadership itself: GĐPT is not merely a youth organization. It is an organic component in the preservation and continuation of the ideals of Vietnamese Buddhism. A generation of GĐPT leaders capable of preserving moral integrity, the spirit of service, and fearless resolve becomes a steadfast fortress for Vietnamese Buddhism amid the uncertainties of the modern age.

What is needed today is not the cultivation of a mentality burdened by reaction or polarization among the young, but rather the nurturing of deeper understanding, compassion, and inner resilience sufficient to safeguard the Dharma amid the upheavals of our era. For what Vietnamese Buddhism needs above all is the formation of a generation mature enough to understand why previous generations endured such painful historical journeys without losing their compassion. Calm enough to recognize that protecting the Dharma is not accomplished through rage, but through wisdom, character, and the ability to stand firm beneath the pressures of the age. Deeply devoted enough to Vietnamese culture and identity so as not to dissolve into the currents of global consumerism.

Within this depth of meaning, Vesak becomes far more than ceremonial platforms, flags, flowers, or rituals. It truly becomes a collective memory of the Vietnamese Buddhist people. A reminder that the light born long ago in Lumbinī Garden was never intended merely for personal peace and blessing. That light has passed through flames of struggle, ruined temples, historical separations, and generations who quietly safeguarded the Dharma amid darkness.

And perhaps the most tragic yet majestic aspect of Vietnamese Buddhism lies not in the calamities it has endured, but in the fact that after all these upheavals, we can still hear the hymn Vietnamese Buddhism echoing through Vesak celebrations; we can still see the Grey Shirt of GĐPT present both in the homeland and abroad; and we can still witness younger generations bowing before the Three Jewels with pure and sincere reverence.

That alone is the sign of an imperishable tradition.

And it is precisely this that gives this year’s Vesak Proclamation, issued by Most Venerable Thích Đức Thắng, Secretary General of the Institute of the Sangha Leadership of the GHPGVNTN, such profound spiritual resonance for all those who continue to remain concerned with the destiny of Vietnamese Buddhism and the path of continuation entrusted to GĐPT in this century.
