Từ những hình thái sơ khai như Gia Đình Phật Hóa Phổ, rồi qua nhiều giai đoạn chuyển biến cùng vận nước và vận đạo, danh xưng ấy dần kết tinh thành một biểu tượng giáo dục mang đậm tinh thần Phật giáo Việt Nam, lấy con người làm trung tâm, lấy lý tưởng giác ngộ và phụng sự làm cứu cánh, lấy tình Lam làm chất keo nối kết những tâm hồn trẻ tuổi trong cùng một dòng sinh mệnh văn hóa và tâm linh.

Suốt hành trình ấy, danh xưng chưa bao giờ cố định như một khái niệm hành chánh. Nó đi cùng những cuộc chia ly của đất nước, theo chân người Việt vượt biển, băng rừng, bước vào những miền đất lưu xứ. Từ quê nhà sang Âu Châu, Úc Châu, Canada và Hoa Kỳ, hai chữ “Việt Nam” trong danh xưng GĐPT dần mang thêm một tầng ý nghĩa khác, không chỉ là địa lý hay quốc tịch mà trở thành ký ức văn hóa, một nơi để người trẻ nhận ra mình thuộc về đâu giữa thế giới đa ngữ và đa căn tính của thời đại mới.

Chính vì vậy, khi bước sang dấu mốc kỷ niệm 75 năm danh xưng GĐPT Việt Nam, câu hỏi về “GĐPT Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ” nên hay không nên thay đổi danh xưng “GĐPT Hoa Kỳ” để đi sâu hơn vào xã hội Mỹ và mở rộng đến người bản xứ không còn là một thảo luận đơn thuần về định hướng phát triển. Trong một xã hội như Hoa Kỳ, nơi các thế hệ trẻ gốc Việt ngày càng lớn lên bằng tiếng Anh, nơi môi trường giáo dục và văn hóa vận hành trên một hệ quy chiếu khác, việc giữ một danh xưng thuần Việt đôi lúc khiến nhiều người lo ngại rằng tổ chức sẽ dần thu hẹp vào phạm vi cộng đồng di dân, khó mở rộng ảnh hưởng đến xã hội chung. Từ đó xuất hiện những suy nghĩ về việc thay đổi tên gọi theo hướng Anh ngữ hóa hay trung tính văn hóa hơn để dễ tiếp cận người Mỹ bản xứ.

Nhưng vấn đề cốt lõi thật ra chưa bao giờ nằm ở cái tên.

Tên gọi của một tổ chức chưa bao giờ chỉ là một nhãn hiệu hành chánh. Đặc biệt với GĐPT Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ, danh xưng ấy còn là ký ức lịch sử, là căn cước văn hóa, là dấu vết của một hành trình lưu vong, và sâu hơn nữa, là một mô hình giáo dục Phật giáo được hình thành từ chính kinh nghiệm tồn sinh của người Việt trong thế kỷ biến động.

Nhưng nếu GĐPT là một định chế giáo dục cộng đồng đặt trên nền tảng Phật giáo Việt Nam, thì danh xưng không còn đơn giản là “branding”; nó là phần nổi của một dòng sinh mệnh văn hóa và tâm linh.

Điều đáng suy nghĩ là xã hội Mỹ chưa bao giờ thực sự yêu cầu các cộng đồng nhập cư phải đánh mất căn tính mới được hội nhập. Người Do Thái vẫn giữ Hebrew School. Người Nhật vẫn giữ Japanese Buddhist Temple hay Buddhist Temple Youth. Người Tây Tạng vẫn giữ Tibetan Buddhism. Người Hoa vẫn giữ Chinese Buddhist Associations. Chính nước Mỹ trưởng thành trên nguyên lý đa văn hóa — nơi giá trị của một cộng đồng không nằm ở mức độ “Mỹ hóa” bề ngoài, mà ở khả năng đóng góp một giá trị riêng cho xã hội chung.

Vấn đề của GĐPT Hoa Kỳ hôm nay không phải vì cái tên “Việt Nam” nên người Mỹ không đến. Thực tế, phần lớn người bản xứ không bị ngăn bởi danh xưng, mà bị ngăn bởi những yếu tố sâu hơn đó chính là rào cản ngôn ngữ, mô hình sinh hoạt còn khép kín văn hóa và thiếu một hệ thống diễn giải giá trị Phật giáo bằng ngôn ngữ giáo dục hiện đại.

Nói cách khác, điều giới trẻ Mỹ hoặc người bản xứ cần không phải là một cái tên mới, mà là khả năng hiểu được “Tổ chức này đang giúp tôi trở thành con người như thế nào?”

Nếu GĐPT vẫn giữ cách vận hành nội bộ nặng tính truyền thống khép kín, dùng hoàn toàn tiếng Việt, sinh hoạt dựa trên ký ức cộng đồng hơn là nhu cầu giáo dục hiện đại, thì dù đổi thành bất cứ tên nào, người bản xứ cũng khó ở lại lâu dài. Ngược lại, nếu GĐPT thực sự xây dựng được một mô hình giáo dục Phật giáo khai phóng, một môi trường song ngữ trưởng thành, khả năng nuôi dưỡng kỹ năng lãnh đạo thanh thiếu niên, tinh thần phụng sự cộng đồng, đời sống chánh niệm thực tiễn và năng lực đối thoại với xã hội Mỹ đương đại, thì ngay cả khi vẫn giữ nguyên tên “Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam,” tổ chức vẫn có khả năng thu hút người không phải gốc Việt.

Bởi con người ngày nay không tìm đến một cái tên. Họ tìm đến một nơi cho họ ý nghĩa sống.

Cốt lõi vì thế không nằm ở danh xưng mà nằm ở nội hàm của tổ chức. Một tổ chức yếu về nội dung thường nghĩ đổi tên sẽ giải quyết khủng hoảng phát triển. Nhưng một tổ chức có chiều sâu sẽ hiểu rằng tên gọi chỉ có sức sống khi bên trong nó còn có linh hồn.

Nhìn vào mô hình sinh hoạt của Làng Mai, chúng ta sẽ thấy một điều rất đáng suy ngẫm cho câu chuyện danh xưng và hướng đi của GĐPT Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ hôm nay: bản sắc Việt Nam chưa từng là rào cản lớn nhất đối với sự hội nhập. Trái lại, trong nhiều trường hợp, chính chiều sâu văn hóa và tâm linh đặc thù ấy lại trở thành điều hấp dẫn thế giới.

Làng Mai vẫn giữ rất nhiều yếu tố Việt Nam từ thiền trà, pháp đàm, tụng niệm, cung cách sinh hoạt tăng thân, tinh thần hiếu kính, cách dùng chuông, cách ăn cơm chánh niệm, cho đến âm hưởng nhẹ nhàng của văn hóa Á Đông. Ngay cả hình bóng của quê hương Việt Nam — tre trúc, thiền thất, nếp sống cộng cư, ngôn ngữ từ ái — vẫn hiện diện rất rõ. Nhưng điều đặc biệt là tất cả những yếu tố ấy không được giữ như một “bảo tàng văn hóa” nhưng được chuyển hóa thành một ngôn ngữ sống có khả năng chạm vào nỗi khổ và khát vọng chung của con người hiện đại.

Chính nơi đó là bài học rất lớn.

Người bản xứ đến với Làng Mai không phải vì họ muốn trở thành người Việt. Họ đến vì ở đó họ tìm thấy sự bình an nội tâm, đời sống tỉnh thức, cảm giác được lắng nghe, một cộng đồng không đặt nặng thành tích và một con đường tâm linh có khả năng chữa lành. Nói cách khác, điều thu hút thế giới không phải là yếu tố “Việt Nam” đơn thuần mà là khả năng chuyển tải giá trị phổ quát thông qua một hình thái văn hóa Việt Nam đã được khai mở.

Đây chính là điểm GĐPT cần suy nghĩ sâu.

Nếu GĐPT chỉ giữ “Việt Nam” như một ký ức cộng đồng khép kín, một không gian sinh hoạt chủ yếu dành cho người Việt nói tiếng Việt thì theo thời gian, tổ chức sẽ tự thu hẹp mình vào phạm vi sắc tộc. Nhưng nếu GĐPT hiểu “Việt Nam” như một nền tảng văn hóa giáo dục có khả năng đóng góp cho xã hội đa văn hóa Hoa Kỳ, thì hai chữ ấy lại trở thành một giá trị độc đáo.

Thật ra, xã hội Mỹ hôm nay không thiếu những tổ chức thanh thiếu niên. Điều họ thiếu là những cộng đồng nuôi dưỡng chiều sâu nội tâm, môi trường đạo đức không cực đoan, giáo dục nhân bản không bị thương mại hóa và những không gian giúp tuổi trẻ vượt qua cô đơn, khủng hoảng tinh thần cùng sự mất phương hướng của thời đại. Đó chính là nơi GĐPT có thể đóng góp.

Bởi cốt lõi của GĐPT chẳng bao giờ chỉ là “giữ văn hóa Việt.” Cốt lõi nằm ở giáo dục con người qua tinh thần Phật giáo. Văn hóa Việt chỉ là chiếc thuyền chuyên chở một dòng tuệ giác và tình người đã được kết tinh qua nhiều thế hệ.

Làng Mai thành công không cần phải đổi tên để trở nên “quốc tế” hơn, mà vì ở đó làm cho giá trị cốt lõi của mình trở nên dễ tiếp cận với nhân loại. Ở đó giữ gốc nhưng mở cửa. Ở đó không đánh mất bản sắc nhưng cũng không biến bản sắc thành hàng rào.

Có lẽ điều cần suy tư nhân dịp kỷ niệm 75 năm “Danh xưng GĐPT Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ” không phải là nên bỏ chữ “Việt Nam” hay không, mà là làm sao để hai chữ “Việt Nam” ấy không trở thành một giới hạn khép kín nhưng là một giá trị văn hóa mở — đủ sâu để giữ gốc rễ, đủ rộng để bước vào thế giới.

Khi ấy, GĐPT Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ sẽ không tồn tại như một cộng đồng hoài niệm về quá khứ mà như một đóng góp sống động của Phật giáo Việt Nam vào tương lai tinh thần của xã hội Mỹ.

Bởi tận cùng, điều giữ cho một tổ chức tồn tại lâu dài không phải là mức độ đổi tên cho giống xã hội chung, mà là khả năng giữ được căn tính trong khi vẫn mở rộng vòng tay đối thoại với thế giới.

Một cây cổ thụ không lớn mạnh bằng cách chối bỏ gốc rễ. Nó lớn mạnh vì rễ bám sâu hơn, trong khi cành lá vẫn mở ra với bầu trời.

Seventy-five years ago, amid a nation still engulfed in war and the violent upheavals of modern history, the name “Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam” did not emerge merely as the title of a Buddhist youth organization, but as a quiet affirmation of the direction and aspiration of an entire generation. From its early forms such as Gia Đình Phật Hóa Phổ, and through many transformations shaped by the fortunes of both nation and Dharma, the name gradually crystallized into an educational symbol deeply rooted in Vietnamese Buddhism — placing the human being at the center, taking awakening and service as its ultimate purpose, and nurturing “Tình Lam” as the spiritual bond connecting young hearts within a shared stream of cultural and spiritual life.

Throughout that journey, the name was never fixed as a mere administrative designation. It traveled alongside the separations and dislocations of the nation itself, following Vietnamese refugees across oceans and forests into lands of exile and resettlement. From Vietnam to Europe, Australia, Canada, and the United States, the words “Việt Nam” within the name GĐPT gradually acquired another layer of meaning: no longer simply geography or nationality, but a cultural memory — a place where younger generations could recognize where they belong amid the multilingual and multi-identity realities of the modern world.

For this reason, as GĐPT Việt Nam enters the milestone of its 75th anniversary, the question of whether “GĐPT Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ” should change its name to “GĐPT Hoa Kỳ” in order to integrate more deeply into American society and attract non-Vietnamese participants is no longer merely a discussion about organizational strategy. It is a question that touches the very foundation of the organization’s self-understanding: what does GĐPT wish to become in its future?

Such concerns are not without reason. In a society like the United States — where younger Vietnamese generations increasingly grow up speaking English, and where educational and cultural life operate according to a different framework — maintaining a purely Vietnamese name can sometimes lead to fears that the organization may gradually confine itself within the boundaries of an immigrant community, unable to extend its influence into broader society. From there arise proposals to adopt a more Anglicized or culturally neutral name in order to become more approachable to mainstream America.

Yet the core issue has never truly been the name itself.

The name of an organization has never been merely an administrative label. Especially for GĐPT Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ, that name carries historical memory, cultural identity, the traces of an exilic journey, and more profoundly, an entire Buddhist educational model shaped through the survival experience of the Vietnamese people in a century of upheaval.

Thus, the question of “changing the name in order to integrate into American society and attract non-Vietnamese participants” is ultimately not about renaming at all, but about how the organization understands itself. If GĐPT sees itself merely as an ethnic association, then adopting a fully English or culturally neutral name may indeed appear to be a reasonable strategy for broader integration and participation. But if GĐPT understands itself as a community-based educational institution grounded in Vietnamese Buddhism, then its name is no longer simply “branding”; it becomes the visible expression of a living cultural and spiritual lineage.

What is worth reflecting upon is that American society has never truly demanded that immigrant communities erase their identities in order to belong. Jewish communities still maintain Hebrew Schools. Japanese communities continue to preserve Japanese Buddhist Temples and Buddhist Temple Youth organizations. Tibetans still uphold Tibetan Buddhism. Chinese communities continue to sustain Chinese Buddhist Associations. America itself matured upon the principle of multiculturalism — where the value of a community lies not in how outwardly “Americanized” it becomes, but in the unique contribution it brings into the larger society.

The challenge facing GĐPT in the United States today is not that Americans are discouraged by the word “Việt Nam.” In reality, most non-Vietnamese are not prevented by the name itself, but by deeper obstacles: language barriers, culturally closed forms of operation, and the absence of a contemporary educational language capable of expressing Buddhist values meaningfully to modern society.

In other words, what American youth and non-Vietnamese participants seek is not a new name, but the ability to understand this question:

“What kind of human being is this organization helping me become?”

If GĐPT continues to function through inward-looking traditional structures, relying entirely on Vietnamese language and operating more from communal nostalgia than from the educational realities of contemporary youth, then regardless of what new name it adopts, non-Vietnamese participants are unlikely to remain for long. Conversely, if GĐPT can genuinely cultivate an open and liberating Buddhist educational model, a mature bilingual environment, youth leadership development, a spirit of community service, practical mindfulness, and the ability to engage contemporary American society, then even while retaining the name “Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam,” it will still possess the capacity to attract those beyond the Vietnamese community.

For people today do not come searching for a name. They come searching for a place that gives meaning to their lives.

The true essence therefore does not lie in the title, but in the inner substance of the organization itself. Organizations lacking depth often believe that changing a name can resolve a developmental crisis. Yet organizations with genuine depth understand that a name possesses vitality only when there remains a living soul within it.

Looking at the model of Plum Village, we may find an important lesson for the question of identity and direction facing GĐPT Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ today: Vietnamese identity has never been the greatest obstacle to integration. On the contrary, in many cases, it is precisely the depth of that distinct Vietnamese spiritual and cultural heritage that becomes attractive to the world.

Plum Village continues to preserve many distinctly Vietnamese elements: tea meditation, Dharma sharing, chanting, communal monastic living, filial reverence, the use of bells, mindful eating, and the gentle atmosphere of East Asian culture. Even the imagery of Vietnam itself — bamboo groves, meditation huts, communal simplicity, compassionate language — remains vividly present. Yet what is remarkable is that these elements are not preserved as a “cultural museum,” but transformed into a living language capable of touching the suffering and aspirations of modern humanity.

Therein lies the great lesson.

Non-Vietnamese practitioners do not come to Plum Village because they wish to become Vietnamese. They come because there they encounter inner peace, mindful living, the experience of being deeply heard, a community not driven by achievement, and a spiritual path capable of healing. In other words, what attracts the world is not “Vietnamese-ness” in itself, but the ability to transmit universal values through a Vietnamese cultural form that has been opened and transformed for humanity at large.

This is precisely the point GĐPT must contemplate deeply.

If GĐPT preserves “Việt Nam” merely as a closed communal memory — a social space primarily reserved for Vietnamese-speaking Vietnamese people — then over time the organization will gradually narrow itself into an ethnic enclosure. But if GĐPT understands “Việt Nam” as a cultural and educational foundation capable of contributing to the multicultural fabric of American society, then those two words become something uniquely valuable.

The reality is that America today does not lack youth organizations. What it lacks are communities that nurture inner depth, ethical environments free from extremism, humanistic education untouched by commercialization, and spaces capable of helping young people overcome loneliness, spiritual crisis, and the profound disorientation of modern life. This is precisely where GĐPT can contribute.

For the essence of GĐPT has never merely been “preserving Vietnamese culture.” Its essence lies in educating human beings through the spirit of Buddhism. Vietnamese culture is simply the vessel carrying a stream of wisdom and compassion refined through generations.

Plum Village did not become globally influential by abandoning its identity in order to appear “more international.” Rather, it succeeded because it made its core values accessible to humanity. It preserved its roots while opening its doors. It did not lose its identity, yet neither did it transform identity into a barrier.

Perhaps this is what deserves reflection on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the name “Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam”: the real question is not whether the words “Việt Nam” should remain or disappear, but how those words can become not a closed limitation, but an open cultural value — deep enough to preserve its roots, yet spacious enough to step into the world.

If that can be realized, then GĐPT Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ will not exist merely as a community nostalgic for the past, but as a living contribution of Vietnamese Buddhism to the spiritual future of American society.

For ultimately, what enables an organization to endure is not the extent to which it changes its name to resemble mainstream society, but its ability to preserve its identity while still extending its arms in dialogue with the world.

A great ancient tree does not grow stronger by denying its roots. It grows stronger because its roots sink deeper into the earth, even as its branches continue opening toward the sky.
