Tâm Tường: Những dòng tâm sự cùng Ban Quản Trại và Trại sinh Huyền Trang VI Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ

Trại huấn luyện Huyền Trang là khóa trại dành cho những Huynh Trưởng đã kinh qua hai trại huấn luyện căn bản Lộc Uyển và A Dục. Đây là những Huynh Trưởng ưu tú được tuyển chọn để bước vào một chương trình huấn luyện cao hơn, tập trung vào lý thuyết lãnh đạo, kiến thức Phật học, cũng như tư cách cầm đoàn. Trong tương lai, chính những trại sinh này sẽ có cơ hội đảm nhận một trong những trách nhiệm quan trọng của tổ chức Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam, vai trò Liên Đoàn Trưởng.

Vì là một trại huấn luyện Huynh Trưởng mang ý nghĩa trọng yếu trong hệ thống sinh hoạt của Gia Đình Phật Tử, nên việc hình thành Ban Quản Trại không phải là điều qua loa. Ban Hướng Dẫn Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ đã phải trải qua nhiều phiên họp liên tục mới có thể hình thành được một Ban Quản Trại với thành phần nhân sự đầy đủ, quy tụ các Huynh Trưởng từ nhiều Ban Hướng Dẫn Miền — từ Đông sang Tây, từ cực Nam lên tận cực Bắc của nước Mỹ.

Nhờ hệ thống viễn liên hiện đại, việc trao đổi và thảo luận trở nên thuận tiện hơn, tiết kiệm được nhiều thời gian và công sức. Tuy nhiên, trong các buổi họp, những ý kiến khác biệt vẫn khó tránh khỏi. Điều đó là điều tự nhiên trong sinh hoạt tập thể. Bởi lẽ, nếu không sống lâu trong tổ chức Áo Lam, không thật sự thấm nhuần tinh thần Lục Hòa của Phật giáo, người Huynh Trưởng khó có thể vượt qua những trở ngại khách quan lẫn chủ quan để đi đến sự đồng thuận cho một chương trình huấn luyện quan trọng như Trại Huynh Trưởng cấp II Huyền Trang — một truyền thống giáo dục đã tồn tại hơn tám thập niên trong tổ chức Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam.

Có những lúc sự trao đổi tưởng chừng rơi vào bế tắc. Nhưng rồi, nhờ sự cảm thông, nhờ sự gìn giữ “tình Lam”, mọi khúc mắc dần được khai thông. Sau tất cả, mọi việc cũng lắng dịu và trôi qua trong sự hòa hợp. Ban Quản Trại được hình thành; tiếp đó là công việc tuyển sinh, rồi từng bước chuẩn bị cho các giai đoạn của kỳ trại, từ ngày khai mạc cho đến ngày bế mạc, với ước mong mọi việc diễn ra suôn sẻ và tốt đẹp.

Ngày khai khóa Giai đoạn I – Hàm thụ

Chỉ còn chưa đầy một tháng nữa, các trại sinh sẽ lại nôn nao lên đường về vùng đất hiền hòa và ấm áp của miền Nam California để tham dự ngày khai khóa Hàm thụ của Trại Huynh Trưởng cấp II – Huyền Trang VI, mang theo trong lòng biết bao niềm vui xen lẫn niềm hãnh diện.

“Có biết chăng” — để hình thành được một kỳ trại như thế này, cả một tập thể Áo Lam đã phải vượt qua biết bao trở ngại. Và trở ngại lớn nhất, theo suy nghĩ của người viết, cũng chính là thành quả đáng quý nhất của tinh thần Huyền Trang: vượt qua được cái “tôi” của chính mình.

Nhờ vậy, chúng tôi xin bày tỏ lòng tri ân sâu sắc đối với các anh chị Huynh Trưởng đã dày công đóng góp từ những bước khởi đầu cho đến khi hoàn chỉnh toàn bộ chương trình của Trại Huyền Trang VI.

Từ Huynh Trưởng Trại Trưởng cho đến các anh chị thành viên Ban Quản Trại — tất cả đều đã tận tâm đóng góp công sức. Điều đó thật đáng trân trọng và cũng rất đáng hãnh diện. Đồng thời, qua sự dấn thân ấy, mỗi người cũng ý thức rõ rằng mình đang hy sinh để góp phần xây dựng một thế hệ Huynh Trưởng trẻ kế thừa, tiếp nối chí nguyện, lý tưởng và mục đích mà mình đã và đang phụng sự — đó chính là tổ chức Gia Đình Phật Tử.

Với ý nguyện rõ ràng ấy, đây vừa là trách nhiệm, vừa là sự hy sinh, đồng thời cũng là tấm gương sống động cho các Huynh Trưởng kế thừa và đàn em noi theo. Bởi nhất cử nhất động của người Huynh Trưởng đều phản chiếu tư cách lãnh đạo và góp phần đào tạo nên những thành viên nòng cốt cho một tổ chức đã có bề dày lịch sử hơn tám mươi năm.

Thật đáng mừng — bởi đó chính là tinh thần Huyền Trang.

Những dòng tâm sự này phát sinh từ cảm xúc chân thành của một “Người Huynh Trưởng Già” — người được Ban Quản Trại phân công phụ trách Tiểu ban Thông Tin – Báo Chí. Vì vậy, chúng tôi có bổn phận chuyển tải thông tin đến quý anh chị trên hành trình đến với trại qua các giai đoạn:

• Giai đoạn I – Hàm thụ
• Giai đoạn II – Thực tập và hội thảo tại đất trại
• Giai đoạn III – Thực tập tại đơn vị

Cùng với phần luận khóa được thực hiện trong thời gian thực tập tại đơn vị.

Vì thế, người Huynh Trưởng Già này cũng luôn tất bật với những nỗi âu lo, vừa cố gắng hoàn thành trách nhiệm được giao, vừa nỗ lực chuyển tải thông tin một cách chính xác và kịp thời để giúp anh chị em trại sinh chuẩn bị đầy đủ hành trang tinh thần cho chặng đường sắp tới.

Đôi khi, để giải tỏa phần nào những lo lắng ấy, tôi vẫn hay đùa vui: “Các anh chị đừng quá lo — dù sao Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam cũng là một ‘thương hiệu’ mà!”

Nói vui như vậy, nhưng có lẽ đôi khi cũng vô tình tạo thêm áp lực. Tuy nhiên, tôi vẫn tin rằng áp lực ấy, nếu được chuyển hóa đúng cách, sẽ trở thành một động lực tích cực, giúp anh chị em nỗ lực hơn trong quá trình học tập và rèn luyện.

Ban Quản Trại dự định tổ chức ngày khai khóa Hàm thụ tại Tổ đình Minh Đăng Quang, Santa Ana, Nam California. Chỉ trong một thời gian ngắn nữa, hàng trăm Huynh Trưởng ưu tú của Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ sẽ hội tụ nơi đây, mang theo trong lòng nhiều suy tư và trăn trở.

Sự hoàn bị về kiến thức lãnh đạo cũng như kho tàng Phật học là điều vô cùng cần thiết. Nhưng tất cả những điều ấy vẫn chưa thể so sánh với trách nhiệm và lý tưởng mà mỗi anh chị đã từng phát nguyện từ ngày tốt nghiệp Trại A Dục: bảo vệ và xây dựng Gia Đình Phật Tử.

Giờ đây, trách nhiệm ấy không chỉ dừng lại ở một đơn vị nhỏ mà còn gắn liền với sự tồn vong và phát triển của toàn thể tập thể Áo Lam trên đất nước Hoa Kỳ.

Các anh chị Huynh Trưởng trẻ hôm nay thật có phước duyên khi được tham dự một khóa trại đặc biệt — đặc biệt từ địa điểm tổ chức cho đến những con người góp mặt trong kỳ trại. Không phải lúc nào cũng có thể hội đủ những nhân duyên tốt đẹp như thế. Mong rằng anh chị hãy trân quý phước duyên quý báu này.

Con đường tu học và phụng sự lý tưởng còn dài ở phía trước. Mai kia, nếu có lúc “gối mỏi chân chồn”, phải đối diện với những chướng duyên hay nghịch cảnh, nếu trong tâm khởi lên ý niệm muốn thối thất Bồ-đề, muốn quay lưng với tổ chức đã từng cưu mang và giáo dưỡng mình khôn lớn — xin anh chị hãy hồi tưởng lại những giây phút thiêng liêng khi quỳ dưới Đại Hùng Bửu Điện, tiếp nhận ánh sáng tuệ giác của chư Phật qua bao thế hệ tiền bối truyền trao.

Hãy nhớ lại lời phát nguyện trước Tam Bảo:

“… nguyện trọn đời phụng sự lý tưởng Gia Đình Phật Tử;
Thuấn nhã đa tánh khả tiêu vong,
Thước ca ra tâm vô động chuyển.”

(Tạm dịch: Tánh hư không kia rồi cũng có ngày biến hoại, nhưng tâm nguyện kiên định của con sẽ không bao giờ lay chuyển.)

Xin hãy nhớ lại những giây phút linh thiêng ấy để không phụ ơn Tam Bảo, không phụ ơn tiền nhân, không phụ lòng các bậc trưởng thượng; để tiếp tục bước đi trên con đường vừa tự giác vừa giác tha, vừa tu học vừa phụng sự lý tưởng — nhé các anh chị trại sinh Huyền Trang thân quý.

Nhân ngày khai khóa Hàm thụ Trại Huyền Trang VI, tôi nhất tâm cầu nguyện cho tất cả Huynh Trưởng trại sinh. Chúng ta hãy dũng mãnh khởi bước với ý chí Kim Cương, để khi dừng chân, tâm thức đã thấm nhuần ánh sáng Bát Nhã.

Anh chị em trại sinh Huyền Trang hôm nay — rồi mai kia sẽ nhận ra rằng Tổ chức Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam, Đạo Pháp và Dân Tộc — rốt cuộc cũng chỉ là một dòng mạch duy nhất của lý tưởng phụng sự.

Người Huynh Trưởng Già này thân kính chúc Ban Quản Trại Trại Huyền Trang VI và toàn thể anh chị Huynh Trưởng trong tổ chức Áo Lam thân yêu luôn vững tâm đạo, tiếp tục dìu dắt các em Đoàn sinh trở thành những người Phật tử hiền thiện trong tổ chức Gia Đình Phật Tử, để nối tiếp bước chân của các thế hệ đi trước trên con đường hoằng dương Chánh Pháp và gìn giữ tổ chức thân yêu này.

Reflections with the Camp Leadership
and Trainees of Huyền Trang VI
Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in the United States

The Huyền Trang Training Camp is a program designed for Youth Leaders who have completed the two foundational training camps, Lộc Uyển and A Dục. These are outstanding leaders who have been selected to enter a more advanced training program focusing on leadership theory, Buddhist studies, and the qualities required to guide and lead a youth unit. In the future, many of these trainees will have the opportunity to assume one of the important responsibilities within the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association: the role of Unit Leader (Liên Đoàn Trưởng).

Because it is a leadership training camp of great significance within the organizational structure of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association, the formation of the Camp Leadership Team is by no means a casual undertaking. The Executive Council of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in the United States had to convene numerous meetings before establishing a fully constituted Camp Leadership Team, bringing together leaders from different regional councils—from the East Coast to the West Coast, and from the southernmost to the northernmost parts of the United States.

Thanks to modern telecommunication systems, communication and discussion became much more convenient, saving considerable time and effort. Nevertheless, differing opinions during meetings were unavoidable. This is a natural aspect of collective organizational life. Indeed, without long years of participation in the Blue Scarf community and without deeply internalizing the Buddhist spirit of Sixfold Harmony (Lục Hòa), it would be difficult for a Youth Leader to overcome both objective and subjective obstacles in order to arrive at consensus for such an important training program as the Huyền Trang Level II Leadership Camp—a training tradition that has endured for more than eight decades within the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association.

There were moments when discussions seemed to reach an impasse. Yet through mutual understanding and the preservation of the cherished “Lam spirit”, many difficulties were gradually resolved. In the end, harmony prevailed. The Camp Leadership Team was successfully formed; recruitment followed; and careful preparations began for each phase of the camp—from the opening day to the closing ceremony—with the hope that everything would unfold smoothly and meaningfully.

Opening Day of Phase I – Correspondence Study

In less than a month, the trainees will once again eagerly set out for the warm and peaceful land of Southern California to attend the opening session of the Correspondence Phase of Huyền Trang VI Level II Leadership Camp, carrying with them a mixture of joy and pride.

Few may realize that in order for this camp to come into being, the entire Blue Scarf community had to overcome numerous challenges. And perhaps the greatest challenge—yet also the most meaningful achievement of the Huyền Trang spirit—is the ability to transcend one’s own ego.

For this reason, we wish to express our deepest gratitude to all the Youth Leaders who have dedicated their time and effort—from the earliest stages of planning to the completion of the entire program of Huyền Trang VI.

From the Camp Director to every member of the Camp Leadership Team, each person has wholeheartedly contributed their time and energy. Such dedication is truly admirable and worthy of great respect. At the same time, through this spirit of service, each of them recognizes that they are making sacrifices in order to nurture a new generation of Youth Leaders who will continue the aspirations, ideals, and mission that they themselves have long served—the mission of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association.

With this clear intention, such service represents both responsibility and sacrifice, while also serving as a living example for younger leaders and future generations to follow. For every action and every gesture of a Youth Leader reflects their leadership character and contributes to the cultivation of the core members of an organization with a history spanning more than eighty years.

This is truly a source of joy—for it is precisely the spirit of Huyền Trang.

These reflections arise from the sincere sentiments of an “Elder Youth Leader,” who has been entrusted by the Camp Leadership Team with responsibilities in the Information and Communications Subcommittee. Therefore, it is our duty to provide updates and information to our fellow leaders regarding the journey toward the camp through its various phases:

• Phase I – Correspondence Study
• Phase II – On-site Training and Workshops at the Camp
• Phase III – Practical Training at Local Units

Along with the completion of the Capstone Paper during the period of unit-based practice.

Thus, this Elder Youth Leader often finds himself busy with many concerns—striving to fulfill the responsibility entrusted to him while also ensuring that accurate and timely information is communicated so that all trainees may prepare themselves spiritually for the journey ahead.

Sometimes, to ease these concerns, I jokingly say:

“Don’t worry too much—after all, the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association is already a ‘brand’!”

Though said in jest, such words may inadvertently create a certain pressure. Yet I believe that when properly transformed, such pressure can become a positive motivation, encouraging everyone to strive even harder in their study and training.

The Camp Leadership Team plans to hold the opening ceremony of the Correspondence Phase at Minh Đăng Quang Patriarchal Temple in Santa Ana, Southern California. In a short time, hundreds of outstanding Youth Leaders of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in the United States will gather there, each carrying their own reflections and aspirations.

The mastery of leadership knowledge and the treasury of Buddhist teachings is certainly essential. Yet beyond all these, there remains something even more important: the responsibility and ideals that each of you vowed to uphold on the day you graduated from A Dục Training Camp—to protect and build the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association.

Today, that responsibility extends beyond the scope of a single unit. It is now connected to the very continuity and flourishing of the entire Blue Scarf community across the United States.

The younger Youth Leaders of today are truly fortunate to participate in such a special training camp—special not only because of its location, but also because of the remarkable individuals who will take part in it. Opportunities in which such auspicious conditions converge are rare. May each of you cherish this precious opportunity.

The path of cultivation and service to the ideal remains long ahead. Someday, when you may feel weary or discouraged, when you must face obstacles or adversity, when the thought of retreating from the Bodhi aspiration arises, or when you feel tempted to turn away from the organization that once nurtured and guided your growth—please remember those sacred moments when you knelt before the Great Hero Hall, receiving the light of wisdom of the Buddhas transmitted through generations of predecessors.

Remember the vow you made before the Three Jewels:

“…I vow to devote my entire life to serving the ideal of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association.

Even if the nature of space itself were to vanish one day,
my steadfast vow shall never waver.”

(Translation: Even the nature of space may one day cease to exist, but this resolute vow of mine will never be shaken.)

Please remember those sacred moments so that we do not betray the Three Jewels, do not forget the gratitude owed to our predecessors, and do not disappoint our elders. May we continue walking the path of both self-awakening and awakening others, cultivating ourselves while serving the shared ideal—dear trainees of Huyền Trang.

On the occasion of the opening of the Correspondence Phase of Huyền Trang VI Training Camp, I sincerely offer my prayers for all the trainees. Let us courageously take the first step with the unwavering determination of a Diamond-like will, so that when we finally pause our steps, our consciousness will already be illuminated by the wisdom of Prajñā.

One day, looking back, the trainees of Huyền Trang today will realize that the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association, the Dharma, and the Nation ultimately flow within a single current—the shared ideal of service.

This Elder Youth Leader respectfully wishes the Camp Leadership Team of Huyền Trang VI and all Youth Leaders within our beloved Blue Scarf community steadfastness in the Dharma, so that you may continue guiding younger members to grow into noble Buddhists within the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association, thereby continuing the path laid down by those who came before us in the mission of propagating the Dharma and preserving this cherished organization.
