Sen Trắng Hoa Kỳ 
Trong truyền thống Phật giáo, ngày húy nhật của một bậc Trưởng lão vốn là thời khắc để chúng ta tưởng niệm về một cá nhân đã khuất, đồng thời sâu xa hơn là dịp để hàng hậu học quán chiếu lại hành trạng của bậc tiền nhân và tự hỏi mình đang đứng ở đâu trong dòng chảy của lịch sử đạo pháp. Đối với hàng ngũ Huynh trưởng và đoàn sinh Thanh, Thiếu của Gia Đình Phật Tử, ngày húy nhật của Hòa thượng Thích Quảng Độ, Đức Đệ Ngũ Tăng Thống của Giáo Hội Phật Giáo Việt Nam Thống Nhất mang một ý nghĩa sâu xa, đó là lời nhắc nhở về trách nhiệm tiếp nối một di sản tinh thần được xây dựng bằng trí tuệ, lòng kiên định và sự hy sinh thầm lặng của nhiều thế hệ Tăng Ni và Phật tử.
Sinh năm 1928 tại Thái Bình, xuất gia từ tuổi thiếu niên, cuộc đời của Đức Đệ Ngũ Tăng Thống là một hành trình dài gắn liền với vận mệnh của Phật giáo Việt Nam và khát vọng tự do tôn giáo, nhân phẩm con người. Trong suốt nhiều thập niên, Ngài không những là một học giả Phật học uyên thâm, một dịch giả và nhà giáo dục, mà còn là một biểu tượng của tinh thần bất khuất trước mọi áp lực của thời cuộc. Ngài từng trải qua nhiều năm tù đày, quản chế và bị sách nhiễu vì những nỗ lực bảo vệ tự do tôn giáo và nhân quyền tại Việt Nam.
Nhưng điều làm nên chiều sâu của hành trạng ấy không giới hạn ở những thử thách mà Ngài đã trải qua. Điều quan trọng hơn chính là thái độ mà Ngài đã chọn, nghĩa là một thái độ kiên trì, ôn hòa và bất bạo động, lấy giáo lý từ bi và trí tuệ của đạo Phật làm nền tảng cho mọi hành động. Trong suốt cuộc đời mình, Ngài luôn nhấn mạnh rằng sự tồn tại của GHPGVNTN không phải là một cấu trúc quyền lực, mà là sự tiếp nối của một lý tưởng tâm linh và đạo đức trong lòng dân tộc.
Chính vì vậy, việc tưởng niệm húy nhật của Đức Đệ Ngũ Tăng Thống không thể chỉ đóng khung lại những nghi lễ tưởng niệm. Đối với thế hệ trẻ Phật tử, đặc biệt là đoàn sinh Thanh, Thiếu và hàng ngũ Huynh trưởng, đây còn là dịp để nhận thức rõ hơn về một truyền thống mà mình đang thừa hưởng. Truyền thống ấy không phải được xây dựng bằng danh xưng hay khẩu hiệu, mà bằng những con người đã sống trọn đời cho lý tưởng phụng sự đạo pháp và dân tộc.
Ý thức ấy càng trở nên quan trọng trong bối cảnh hiện nay, khi khoảng cách giữa các thế hệ ngày càng lớn và ký ức lịch sử dễ dàng bị lãng quên. Nếu không có sự nhắc nhớ và học hỏi, những hành trạng như của Đức Tăng Thống sẽ dần chỉ còn lại trong sách vở. Nhưng khi được nhận thức đúng đắn, những hành trạng ấy lại trở thành nguồn cảm hứng mạnh mẽ cho đời sống tu học và phụng sự của thế hệ trẻ hôm nay và mai sau.
Đối với người Huynh trưởng Gia Đình Phật Tử, tưởng niệm một bậc Tăng Thống còn là một lời nhắc về vai trò của mình trong việc gìn giữ và chuyển trao lý tưởng ấy cho đàn em. Mỗi giờ sinh hoạt, mỗi buổi học Phật pháp, mỗi sinh hoạt trại hay mỗi công tác Phật sự tại tự viện đều có thể trở thành những mắt xích nhỏ trong dòng tiếp nối ấy. Khi hiểu được ý nghĩa của những nhân vật lịch sử như Đức Đệ Ngũ Tăng Thống Hòa thượng Thích Quảng Độ, người Huynh trưởng sẽ không chỉ hướng dẫn bằng kỹ năng tổ chức, mà còn bằng một chiều sâu nhận thức về truyền thống của Phật giáo Việt Nam đầy bi tráng.
Ngày húy nhật vì thế vừa là một ngày tưởng niệm. Đó là một điểm dừng trong dòng thời gian để chúng ta nhìn lại con đường mà những người đi trước đã mở ra. Từ đó, mỗi Huynh trưởng và mỗi đoàn sinh có thể tự hỏi mình đang làm gì để xứng đáng với những hy sinh và tâm nguyện mà các bậc tiền bối đã gửi lại cho thế hệ hôm nay?
Khi những câu hỏi ấy được đặt ra một cách chân thành, ngày húy nhật của Đức Đệ Ngũ Tăng Thống không còn chỉ là một kỷ niệm lịch sử. Nơi đây trở thành một lời nhắc nhở sống động về lý tưởng phụng sự đạo pháp vẫn đang tiếp tục được viết nên bởi chính những bước chân của thế hệ hiện tại.
Và trong giờ phút tưởng niệm trang nghiêm ấy, xin được nhắn gởi đôi lời tâm sự chân thành. Tôi thân còn mang trọng bệnh cuối đời, sức khỏe không cho phép đồng hành cùng Anh-Chị-Em trong mọi Phật sự như những năm tháng trước. Nhưng tâm và trí vẫn luôn hướng về tất cả, để được hiện diện trong chính thệ nguyện chung thủy với vận mệnh Đạo pháp và Dân tộc. Trong hành trình ấy, hình ảnh Giáo Hội Phật Giáo Việt Nam Thống Nhất mãi là ngọn hải đăng soi sáng con đường; và mỗi đời Tăng Thống chính là một ánh lửa được thắp lên để giữ cho ánh sáng ấy không bao giờ tắt.
Nguyện cho Chánh Pháp trường tồn, Dân tộc sáng lạng quang huy.
Kính nhờ quý Anh Chị Em lam viên, khi đến trước bàn Phật và trước tôn ảnh Đức Tăng Thống, thắp dùm tôi một nén hương tưởng niệm. Từ nơi phòng điều dưỡng này, tôi xin lắng tâm hướng vọng Giác linh, nguyện cầu Đức Trưởng Lão Hòa Thượng thùy từ chứng giám cho tấm lòng của hàng hậu học vẫn còn đang cố gắng giữ gìn và tiếp nối con đường mà Ngài và chư vị tiền bối đã khai mở.

Consciousness of Continuity
on the Memorial Day of the Fifth Supreme Patriarch
of the Unified Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam
In the Buddhist tradition, the memorial day of a venerable elder is not merely a moment to remember an individual who has passed away. More profoundly, it is an occasion for those who come after to contemplate the life and conduct of the predecessors and to ask themselves where they stand within the flowing current of the Dharma’s history. For the ranks of GĐPT Leaders and the Thanh and Thiếu members of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association, the memorial day of the Most Venerable Thích Quảng Độ, the Fifth Supreme Patriarch of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam, carries a particularly profound meaning. It is a reminder of the responsibility to continue a spiritual legacy built upon wisdom, steadfastness, and the quiet sacrifices of many generations of monks, nuns, and lay Buddhists.
Born in 1928 in Thái Bình and ordained at a young age, the life of the Fifth Supreme Patriarch was a long journey intertwined with the destiny of Vietnamese Buddhism and the aspiration for religious freedom and human dignity. For many decades, he was not only an erudite Buddhist scholar, a translator, and an educator, but also a symbol of unwavering integrity in the face of historical pressures. He endured years of imprisonment, house arrest, and harassment because of his efforts to defend religious freedom and human rights in Vietnam.
Yet the depth of his life cannot be measured merely by the trials he endured. What truly defined his legacy was the attitude he chose—an attitude of perseverance, compassion, and nonviolence, grounded in the wisdom and loving-kindness of the Buddha’s teachings. Throughout his life, he consistently affirmed that the existence of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam was never meant to be a structure of power, but rather the continuation of a spiritual and ethical ideal rooted in the life of the Vietnamese nation.
For this reason, commemorating the memorial day of the Fifth Supreme Patriarch cannot remain confined to ceremonial observances alone. For the younger generation of Buddhist youth—especially the Thanh, Thiếu members and the ranks of GĐPT Leaders—this day is also an opportunity to recognize more clearly the tradition they have inherited. That tradition was not built upon titles or slogans, but upon individuals who devoted their entire lives to the service of the Dharma and the nation.
Such awareness becomes even more important in the present time, when the distance between generations continues to grow and historical memory can easily fade. Without remembrance and learning, the lives of figures such as the Supreme Patriarch may gradually remain only in books. Yet when properly understood, their example becomes a powerful source of inspiration for the life of study, practice, and service among the youth of today and tomorrow.
For a GĐPT Leader, commemorating a Supreme Patriarch is also a reminder of one’s role in preserving and transmitting this ideal to the younger generation. Each gathering, each Dharma class, each training camp, and each act of service at a temple can become a small link in this chain of continuity. When one understands the meaning of historical figures such as the Fifth Supreme Patriarch, the Most Venerable Thích Quảng Độ, leadership is no longer limited to organizational skills alone, but is enriched by a deep awareness of the solemn and heroic tradition of Vietnamese Buddhism.
Thus, the memorial day is both a day of remembrance and a moment of pause in the stream of time. It invites us to look back upon the path opened by those who came before us. From there, every GĐPT Leader and every youth member may ask themselves: what are we doing to be worthy of the sacrifices and aspirations that our predecessors have entrusted to the generations of today?
When these questions are asked sincerely, the memorial day of the Fifth Supreme Patriarch ceases to be merely a historical recollection. It becomes a living reminder that the ideal of serving the Dharma continues to be written by the very footsteps of the present generation.
And in this solemn moment of remembrance, allow me to share a few words of personal reflection. My body now carries a grave illness in the final stage of life, and my health no longer permits me to accompany all of you in every Buddhist undertaking as in the past years. Yet my mind and heart remain constantly directed toward you all, so that I may still be present in the shared vow of steadfast loyalty to the destiny of the Dharma and the Nation.
Within that journey, the image of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam will forever remain a lighthouse illuminating the path, and each generation of Supreme Patriarchs is like a flame that has been lit to ensure that this light will never fade.
May the True Dharma endure, and may the nation shine in dignity and radiance.
I respectfully ask all Lam members that when you come before the Buddha altar and the portrait of the Supreme Patriarch, please light a stick of incense on my behalf in remembrance. From this nursing room, I quietly direct my mind in reverence toward his awakened spirit, praying that the Most Venerable Patriarch may compassionately bear witness to the sincerity of those who continue striving to preserve and carry forward the path opened by him and by the venerable predecessors.
