INTRODUCTION
The early twentieth century marked one of the most profound periods of transformation in modern Vietnamese history. Under the impact of colonial rule, the expansion of Western-style education, and changes in economic, cultural, and social life, many traditional institutions were compelled to adjust to new historical circumstances. Vietnamese Buddhism was no exception. In response to the challenges of the age, the call for Buddhist revival gradually extended beyond the sphere of religious life to encompass aspirations for national cultural renewal, educational reform, and the formation of a lay Buddhist community endowed with knowledge, moral integrity, and a spirit of service to society. It was within this broader current that the Vietnamese Buddhist Revival Movement emerged, inaugurating a new period in the development of modern Vietnamese Buddhism[1].
Upon the intellectual and organizational foundations established by the Buddhist Revival Movement[2], a process of Buddhist youth education gradually took shape through a succession of models, from the Đồng Ấu Phật Tử groups and Phật Học Đức Dục to Gia Đình Phật Hóa Phổ. This process reflected sustained efforts to renew methods of Dharma propagation, expand lay Buddhist education, and cultivate younger generations amid the transformation of Vietnamese society. In 1951, together with the establishment of the General Association of Vietnamese Buddhism, the name Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam was formally unified as part of the nationwide movement toward Buddhist unification. From that point onward, GĐPTVN gradually developed into an educational organization for Buddhist children, adolescents, and young adults, occupying an important place in Vietnamese Buddhist life and taking the ideal of Bi–Trí–Dũng—Compassion, Wisdom, and Courage—as the foundation for character formation and service to society.
The events of April 1975[3] opened a new chapter in the history of the Vietnamese people. Through successive waves of evacuation, flight by sea, and resettlement in many countries, particularly the United States, an overseas Vietnamese community gradually emerged under conditions of displacement. In their new homeland, Vietnamese refugees were required not only to rebuild their lives through the difficult work of economic survival, but also to preserve the language, culture, religious traditions, and historical memory they had carried with them. The earliest Vietnamese Buddhist temples in the United States therefore gradually became centers of spiritual, cultural, and communal life. Within these spaces, local GĐPT units were established one after another in response to a natural need: to educate younger generations, preserve Vietnamese cultural identity, and continue the ideal of service to the Dharma within a new social environment[4].
The history of GĐPTVN in the United States reflects, first and foremost, the development of a Buddhist educational organization. More broadly, it is also the story of the vitality of an immigrant community seeking to preserve its roots while undergoing the process of social integration. It is the journey of successive generations of Huynh trưởng and Đoàn sinh who quietly built the organization from modest gatherings in temple courtyards, borrowed classrooms, and private homes, gradually forming a network of Buddhist youth education extending across numerous states[5].
During its half-century of presence, GĐPTVN in the United States has passed through a succession of distinct stages. Some periods were marked by vigorous growth alongside the expansion of the Vietnamese American community; others brought challenges involving organizational structures, personnel, generational succession, and changing social circumstances. Each stage left its own distinctive imprint, reflecting the organization’s capacity to adapt to historical change while also demonstrating the enduring vitality of a Buddhist educational ideal within a culturally pluralistic society.
This historical inquiry does not seek to reconstruct the entire past as a complete narrative account. Rather, it endeavors to develop a framework of historical interpretation through which events that may initially appear fragmented can be understood in relation to one another and within their broader historical contexts.
The primary scope of this study extends from 1976 to 2026, while also tracing the intellectual, educational, and organizational foundations established in Vietnam before 1975. This return to the historical origins of the organization is necessary because GĐPTVN in the United States did not emerge as an entirely new institution. It represents the continuation and adaptation of an educational tradition cultivated over several decades in Vietnam.
Methodologically, this study draws upon both primary and secondary sources[6], including organizational documents, congress proceedings, official circulars, decisions, internal publications, correspondence, photographs, memoirs, oral testimonies, and relevant scholarly works. When sources provide differing accounts, the study gives priority to the comparison of multiple independent forms of evidence while maintaining appropriate caution concerning events that cannot yet be fully verified.
In addition to reconstructing events, this study seeks to situate them within their respective historical contexts. Such an approach makes it possible to identify more clearly the factors that contributed to the formation, development, and transformation of GĐPTVN in the United States during each historical period. Accordingly, the inquiry adopts an approach grounded in evidence, context, and analysis, so that each event may be situated within the organization’s broader process of development rather than merely recorded as an isolated occurrence.
The history of an educational organization, however, cannot be understood solely through events that can be assigned precise dates. Many significant transformations unfold slowly, accumulating quietly within the life of individual units and successive generations of Huynh trưởng and Đoàn sinh before becoming visible, sometimes many years later, as changes in organizational structure. A historical study of GĐPTVN in the United States must therefore move beyond a sequence of administrative events to identify the long-term processes operating within its educational life.
The value of historical inquiry lies not in the number of events it records, but in its ability to place those events within the appropriate context and thereby discern broader patterns of historical development. The same event may be interpreted differently by successive generations, depending upon their distance from the past, the sources available to them, and the questions posed by their own time. Historical research is therefore not a journey toward a single “final conclusion,” but an ongoing dialogue among historical evidence, memory, and the understanding of the researcher. When approached with intellectual objectivity and appropriate historical methods, temporal distance may illuminate relationships that contemporaries themselves were not yet in a position to perceive.
At the same time, the history of a community exists not only in official documents or congress proceedings, but also in the collective memory of those who lived through it. Memoirs, internal publications, commemorative accounts, and retrospective studies produced in different periods, despite bearing the subjective perspectives of their authors, remain valuable sources for understanding how a community narrates its own history. In this sense, the history of GĐPTVN in the United States is also a history of memory transmitted through successive generations of the Grey Shirt community.
Accordingly, this study seeks both to reconstruct what occurred and to explain why particular transformations emerged, what they reveal about the development of GĐPTVN in the United States, and which experiences may be transmitted to future generations. Such interpretation is not intended to replace historical facts, but to enable those facts to become a form of knowledge capable of illuminating the present[7].
In the course of this inquiry, the development of GĐPTVN in the United States is understood as having taken place across several interrelated dimensions, including organizational structure, Huynh trưởng training, the life of local units, and the formation of succeeding generations. Examining these dimensions together makes it possible to present a more comprehensive historical portrait of the organization’s half-century of presence in the United States.
From this perspective, the history of GĐPTVN in the United States is understood not merely through documents, congresses, or leadership structures, but also through the life of its local units, the role of the Huynh trưởng, the maturation of its Đoàn sinh, and the continuing transmission of the ideal of Bi–Trí–Dũng within a new cultural environment. Only by bringing together the organizational and educational dimensions can a reasonably complete picture of this half-century of presence be drawn.
This historical inquiry hopes to contribute an additional documentary foundation for the study of GĐPTVN history while opening further avenues of research into organizational history, Buddhist education, and the life of the Vietnamese community in the United States. Every historical work is, ultimately, an invitation to enter into dialogue with the past in a spirit of honesty, objectivity, and responsibility[8].
In this respect, documenting the half-century presence of GĐPTVN in the United States may also be understood as an act of heritage-making, through which experiences, memories, and values are transmitted and protected from being lost amid the passage of time.

[3] On May 23, 1975, the United States Congress enacted the Indochina Migration and Refugee Assistance Act (Public Law 94–23), establishing the legal framework for the admission and resettlement of refugees from Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. This legislation provided a foundation for the initial formation of Vietnamese communities in the United States after 1975.
[4] Within overseas Vietnamese communities, Vietnamese Buddhist temples served not only as places of religious practice but also as centers for the preservation of language and culture, education, and communal life. GĐPTVN developed primarily within this cultural environment.
[5] In this study, the term “GĐPTVN in the United States” refers to the organization’s historical development from 1976 to 2026. The presentation of its successive stages is based upon organizational documents, resolutions, congress proceedings, internal publications, archival photographs, and memoirs produced by multiple generations of Huynh trưởng.
[6] In this study, primary sources include organizational documents, official decisions, circulars, congress proceedings, correspondence, photographs, memoirs, and oral testimonies. Secondary sources include published scholarly studies, historical inquiries, articles, and synthetic works. When sources differ, the study gives priority to comparison among multiple independent sources before reaching an interpretation.

[8] Objectivity in historical research does not mean absolute neutrality toward every perspective. It requires, above all, fidelity to the historical evidence, transparency of method, and a conscious distinction between historical facts and the researcher’s interpretations. All conclusions in this study are understood within the limitations of the presently available sources and remain open to revision when new and credible evidence emerges.
