ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

No historical work can be completed through the efforts of one person alone. Behind every page of documentation, every comparison of historical sources, and every interpretation that has taken shape lies the assistance, sharing, and encouragement of many people, whether directly or indirectly.

Throughout the preparation of this historical study, I have received invaluable support from venerable members of the Sangha, fellow Leaders, senior members of the organization, historical witnesses, and many brothers and sisters of the Áo Lam community both within and beyond the United States. Many generously shared documents, organizational records, photographs, memoirs, correspondence, and memories preserved over many decades; others devoted their time to reading drafts, offering comments, making corrections, and supplementing details without which the historical picture of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in the United States would undoubtedly have remained incomplete, and this study could scarcely have assumed its present form.

I also wish to express my sincere appreciation to the authors of the scholarly studies, memoirs, conference papers, internal publications, and archival materials consulted in the course of preparing this work. Although each was produced under different circumstances, all have contributed to preserving the shared memory of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association (GĐPTVN) and have helped establish a foundation upon which succeeding generations may continue to research, systematize, and critically compare its history.

With gratitude, I wish to acknowledge all those forms of quiet assistance that I cannot fully name within these few lines. Some encounters lasted only a brief moment yet opened an entirely new direction of inquiry; some telephone conversations, letters, old photographs, or even a single confirmation from a witness were enough to illuminate gaps in the historical record. Every contribution, great or small, has become part of this work.

In particular, I reverently bow in homage and gratitude for the teaching and guidance of my revered Dharma Masters, who directly or indirectly nurtured in me faith in the Three Jewels, a method of Buddhist study, and a spirit of service. Their teachings, examples of practice, and spiritual bearing have been not only a foundation for my own life of inner transformation, but also a continuing source of inspiration throughout the research and preparation of this work.

With profound reverence, I commemorate my late revered Dharma Master, Elder Most Venerable Thích Tuệ Sỹ (1945–2023), a towering figure of modern Vietnamese Buddhism, who opened for generations of monastics and lay Buddhists a path of scholarship inseparable from wisdom, ethical discipline, and responsibility toward Buddhist history. I also reverently commemorate Most Venerable Thích Phước An (1947–2026), a deeply respected Dharma Master who bestowed upon me much instruction, support, and encouragement along the path of Buddhist practice and service; and the late Most Venerable Thích Hạnh Tuấn (1956–2015), the First Commissioner-General of the Youth Department of the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha in the United States, who helped lay the foundations for the guidance and education of Buddhist youth and left a significant imprint upon the development of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in the United States.

I also respectfully offer my gratitude to Most Venerable Thích Chơn Trí, Abbot of Pháp Vân Temple in Pomona, California; Most Venerable Nguyên Siêu, President of the Executive Council of the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha in the United States; Most Venerable Thích Từ Lực, Abbot of Phổ Từ Temple in Hayward, California; and Venerable Thích Giới Minh, Commissioner-General of the Youth Department of the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha in the United States. Through their compassionate protection, instruction, encouragement, and the many favorable conditions they have provided, these venerable teachers have enabled me to continue learning, deepen my aspiration for the Dharma, and proceed with greater steadfastness along the path of serving the True Dharma and the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association.

For those revered Dharma Masters who have entered Nirvana, I offer my wholehearted remembrance and vow to cherish forever the debt of their teaching and guidance throughout the remainder of my journey of Buddhist practice and service. For the venerable teachers still present among us, I respectfully pray that they may enjoy ease in body and mind and longevity in the Dharma, continuing to stand as great sheltering trees, protecting and illuminating the path for later generations in their study of Buddhism and service to the True Dharma.

I also offer my heartfelt gratitude to the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association—the educational home that has nurtured generations of Buddhists through the ideal of Compassion – Wisdom – Courage and the spirit of selfless service. Throughout the organization’s journey of nearly a century and its half-century of presence in the United States, countless generations of Leaders have quietly planted seeds of Bodhi through weekly activities, training courses, camps, and seemingly ordinary acts that together have sustained the living current of Gia Đình Phật Tử. It was within this educational environment that the fundamental values of my Buddhist study and practice, my sense of responsibility toward the organization, and my awareness of preserving history as part of the responsibility of succession were nurtured.

Within this continuum of gratitude, I bow in gratitude to my Father and Mother—those who gave me life and homeland and, from my earliest years, planted within me the seed of Áo Lam through the very lineage of my family. Before I was old enough to understand the meaning of an ideal or the nature of service, the Grey Shirt was already present in my life as part of the family tradition; before I knew how to name the path I would one day follow, the footsteps of my Father and Mother had quietly led me toward the temple, toward Gia Đình, and toward those of the Áo Lam community who would later become an inseparable part of my life. That seed was not transmitted through lofty instruction, but through life itself—through the ways of the family, through sacrifice, and through a living current passed from bloodline into consciousness. With the passing years, what began simply as a wholesome affinity inherited through family gradually became my own choice, a bond in the Dharma, a responsibility, and a path in life that I vow to follow until the end of my journey.

Today, as I turn again through nearly a century of the history of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association and half a century of Áo Lam life on American soil, I understand more deeply that great histories sometimes begin with very small things: a family home, a hand leading a child to the temple, a Grey Shirt first worn before the child could fully understand the meaning of its color. If in this life I have been able to preserve even a measure of aspiration toward the Dharma and Gia Đình, to cherish an old page of history, to hold affection for a generation that has passed, and to care about those who will come after, then deep within all these things remain the presence of my Father and Mother. I respectfully dedicate this modest work as an offering of incense from the heart, in gratitude for the profound debt of birth and upbringing and for the legacy through which my parents transmitted to me the seed of Áo Lam through a family bloodline—a seed that, throughout the course of one life, I vow to preserve as part of a spiritual lineage.

I respectfully extend my gratitude to the Guidance Committee of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in the United States across its many periods; to fellow Leaders, honored senior pioneers, Áo Lam members, and youth members throughout the Regions and local units who have accompanied me with understanding, encouragement, and support along my path of Buddhist study and practice and throughout the preparation of this work. Guidance has sometimes come through a single word of instruction, a trust placed in me, an understanding offered during difficult times, or simply the enduring presence of the bonds of Áo Lam. All have become sources of encouragement that enabled me to persevere in collecting documents, comparing historical sources, and bringing this study to completion.

Finally, I wish to express my profound gratitude to my life companion, Phổ Ái Trần Anh Hoài Thương.

Throughout the preparation of this study, as well as during many other Buddhist undertakings, her understanding, encouragement, and willingness to share the burdens of daily life have been a steadfast source of support, allowing me to devote my full energy to research and service. Perhaps during this period more than ever, I have come to understand that behind every hour spent immersed in historical sources, every night kept awake over the manuscript, and every journey undertaken in search of historical materials lies the quiet sacrifice of one who willingly assumes the responsibilities of everyday life so that I may devote myself wholeheartedly to the Buddhist undertakings to which I have committed my heart.

Her companionship has been more than support for me alone; it has also been a quiet form of sustaining support for the shared work of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association. I wish to acknowledge that devotion with my deepest gratitude and appreciation.

If this historical study should prove useful in preserving the historical record and contribute in any measure to the research, education, and training of generations to come, then whatever merit it may possess belongs first to the nurturing grace of the Three Jewels, the guidance of the venerable members of the Sangha, the formative influence of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association, and the collective support of all those who have quietly accompanied me. Any omissions, errors, or interpretations that may remain inadequate are entirely my responsibility.

Homage to the Ever-Joyful Bodhisattva Mahāsattva.
