Trong niềm kính tiếc sâu xa, Giáo hội Phật giáo Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ cùng môn đồ pháp quyến Chùa Giác Minh đã long trọng tổ chức tang lễ Đại lão Hòa thượng Thích Thanh Cát, bậc tôn túc trưởng lão của Phật giáo Việt Nam hải ngoại, Chủ tịch Giáo hội Phật giáo Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ, Tăng thống Giáo hội Liên Tông Phật giáo Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ, Viện chủ Chùa Giác Minh tại East Palo Alto, California. Đại lão Hòa thượng đã viên tịch vào chiều ngày 26 tháng 6 năm 2026, trụ thế 101 tuổi, hạ lạp 80 năm, để lại niềm kính tiếc vô hạn đối với Tăng Ni, Phật tử và đông đảo cộng đồng người Việt tại Hoa Kỳ. Tang lễ được cử hành từ ngày 7 đến ngày 10 tháng 7 năm 2026 tại Chùa Giác Minh theo truyền thống Phật giáo Việt Nam, trang nghiêm, thanh tịnh và thấm đượm đạo tình.
Sự viên tịch của Đại lão Hòa thượng không những là sự mất mát của một tự viện hay một tổ chức Giáo hội, điền đó còn đánh dấu sự khép lại của một thế hệ cao tăng đã trực tiếp gắn bó với hành trình hình thành và phát triển của Phật giáo Việt Nam trên đất Hoa Kỳ từ những ngày đầu của làn sóng người Việt định cư sau năm 1975.
Đại lão Hòa thượng thuộc dòng thiền Vĩnh Nghiêm, một pháp phái có cội nguồn từ Tổ đình Vĩnh Nghiêm ở Bắc Giang, Việt Nam. Qua nhiều thế hệ truyền thừa, dòng Vĩnh Nghiêm không chỉ nổi bật về giới luật và thiền môn mà còn có vai trò đặc biệt trong phong trào chấn hưng Phật giáo Việt Nam ở thế kỷ XX. Nhiều bậc danh tăng của truyền thống này đã góp phần xây dựng nền giáo dục Phật giáo, đào tạo Tăng tài và đưa đạo Phật hội nhập với đời sống dân tộc trong nhiều giai đoạn lịch sử.
Mang theo chí nguyện hoằng pháp nơi xứ người, Hòa thượng đã kiến lập Chùa Giác Minh tại vùng East Palo Alto. Từ một đạo tràng nhỏ ban đầu, ngôi chùa dần trở thành một trong những trung tâm Phật giáo Việt Nam đầu tiên và có ảnh hưởng sâu rộng tại vùng Bắc California. Trong nhiều thập niên, Chùa Giác Minh không giới hạn là nơi lễ bái và tu học của Phật tử Việt Nam mà còn là điểm tựa tinh thần của biết bao gia đình di dân trong những năm đầu ổn định cuộc sống nơi đất khách.
Đối với cộng đồng Phật giáo Bắc California, Chùa Giác Minh mang ý nghĩa vượt lên một cơ sở tín ngưỡng. Đây là nơi gìn giữ tiếng Việt, văn hóa Việt, nghi lễ truyền thống và tinh thần Phật giáo Việt Nam giữa môi trường đa văn hóa của Hoa Kỳ. Nhiều thế hệ thanh thiếu niên đã trưởng thành từ mái chùa này, tiếp nối đạo tâm và ý thức phụng sự cộng đồng.
Đối với nhiều cựu đoàn sinh và huynh trưởng Ái Hữu Gia Đình Phật Tử Vĩnh Nghiêm, Chùa Giác Minh là nơi gắn bó mật thiết, và kính trọng Hòa thượng như bậc ân sư.
Tang lễ của Đại lão Hòa thượng sẽ quy tụ đông đảo chư tôn đức Tăng Ni từ nhiều truyền thống, tự viện và Giáo hội cùng Phật tử, thân hữu khắp California cũng như nhiều tiểu bang khác trở về đảnh lễ, tưởng niệm và tri ân.
Cuộc đời của Đại lão Hòa thượng Thích Thanh Cát là chứng tích của một thế hệ tăng sĩ đã mang theo truyền thống Phật giáo Việt Nam vượt qua biển lớn để bén rễ nơi quê hương mới. Những công trình vật chất rồi sẽ đổi thay theo thời gian, nhưng điều còn lại lâu bền hơn chính là một ngôi già lam đã trở thành mái nhà của bao thế hệ, một truyền thống tu học được tiếp nối và một tinh thần phụng sự âm thầm được trao truyền từ đời này sang đời khác. Trong mạch nguồn ấy, Chùa Giác Minh sẽ luôn là một phần của di sản mà Đại lão Hòa thượng đã dày công vun bồi, để ánh sáng Phật pháp tiếp tục lan tỏa trên vùng đất Bắc California cho nhiều thế hệ mai sau.

The Closing of a Century of Buddhist Service, the Beginning of a Lasting Legacy for Vietnamese Buddhism in Northern California
With profound reverence and sorrow, the Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha in the United States, together with the disciples and devotees of Giác Minh Pagoda, will solemnly conduct the funeral services for Most Venerable Thích Thanh Cát, one of the most senior patriarchs of Vietnamese Buddhism in the diaspora, President of the Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha in the United States, Patriarch of the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha in the United States, and Abbot of Giác Minh Pagoda in East Palo Alto, California.
The Most Venerable entered parinirvāṇa on the afternoon of June 26, 2026, at the venerable age of 101, with 80 Rain Retreats (Vassas) in the monastic life. His passing leaves an immeasurable sense of loss among the Sangha, Buddhist faithful, and the Vietnamese community throughout the United States. Funeral services will be held at Giác Minh Pagoda from July 7 through July 10, 2026, following the traditional Vietnamese Buddhist liturgy in an atmosphere of dignity, serenity, and deep spiritual devotion.
The passing of the Most Venerable represents far more than the loss of a respected monastery or a Buddhist organization. It marks the conclusion of an extraordinary generation of eminent monks whose lives were inseparably linked with the establishment and growth of Vietnamese Buddhism in the United States during the earliest years following the arrival of Vietnamese refugees after 1975.
Most Venerable Thích Thanh Cát belonged to the Vĩnh Nghiêm Dharma lineage, a distinguished tradition tracing its roots to Vĩnh Nghiêm Patriarchal Monastery in Bắc Giang Province, Vietnam. Through many generations of transmission, the Vĩnh Nghiêm lineage has been renowned not only for its strict observance of the Vinaya and its meditative heritage, but also for its significant contribution to the twentieth-century Buddhist Revival Movement in Vietnam. Numerous eminent masters of this lineage helped shape modern Buddhist education, cultivate generations of monastics, and bring the Dharma into the heart of Vietnamese society during pivotal periods of the nation’s history.
Inspired by the Bodhisattva aspiration to propagate the Dharma abroad, the Most Venerable established Giác Minh Pagoda in East Palo Alto. Beginning as a modest temple, it gradually became one of the earliest Vietnamese Buddhist centers in Northern California and has remained an influential spiritual home for the Vietnamese Buddhist community throughout the region. For decades, Giác Minh Pagoda has served not only as a place of worship and Buddhist practice but also as a spiritual refuge for countless Vietnamese immigrant families as they built new lives far from their homeland.
For the Vietnamese Buddhist community in Northern California, Giác Minh Pagoda has always represented far more than a religious institution. It has preserved the Vietnamese language, cultural heritage, traditional Buddhist rituals, and the living spirit of Vietnamese Buddhism within America’s multicultural society. Generations of young Buddhists have grown up beneath its roof, nurturing both their spiritual practice and their commitment to compassionate service.
For many former members and leaders of the Vĩnh Nghiêm Buddhist Youth Association, Giác Minh Pagoda has remained a deeply cherished spiritual home, while Most Venerable Thích Thanh Cát has long been regarded with profound respect as a compassionate teacher and spiritual mentor whose quiet guidance left an enduring imprint upon their lives.
The funeral services are expected to gather numerous senior monks and nuns representing various Buddhist traditions, monasteries, and Sanghas, together with Buddhist devotees and friends from throughout California and many other states, all returning to pay their final respects and express their gratitude to a great master whose life was devoted entirely to the Three Jewels.
The life of Most Venerable Thích Thanh Cát stands as a living testimony to a generation of Vietnamese monks who carried the Buddhist tradition across the Pacific and enabled it to take deep root in their adopted homeland. Physical structures may one day change with time, yet what endures is far more precious: a monastery that has become the spiritual home of generations, a living tradition of Buddhist cultivation passed from teacher to disciple, and a quiet spirit of selfless service transmitted from one generation to the next.
Within that unbroken stream of Dharma, Giác Minh Pagoda will forever remain an essential part of the legacy that Most Venerable Thích Thanh Cát devoted his life to cultivating, allowing the light of the Buddhadharma to continue illuminating Northern California for generations yet to come.
