Anh chị em Áo Lam thân mến,
Ngày hôm nay, trên đất nước Hoa Kỳ – nơi chúng ta đang cùng nhau tu học và phụng sự – là một ngày lễ trọng đại: Ngày Độc Lập. Một ngày tưởng niệm cội nguồn của khát vọng tự do và tự quyết, là dấu mốc mở đầu cho hành trình xây dựng một quốc gia mà mỗi người đều có quyền mưu cầu hạnh phúc theo cách của riêng mình.
Nhưng trong lòng người áo Lam, ngày Độc Lập không những là ngày của pháo hoa, cờ xí hay diễn văn hùng hồn. Đó là dịp để tự nhắc lại một câu hỏi nền tảng: thế nào là độc lập đích thực? Và làm sao người Huynh trưởng Gia Đình Phật Tử, giữa thời đại đầy biến động này, có thể sống và phụng sự như một con người tự do?
Trong giáo lý Phật đà, độc lập là trạng thái không bị cai trị. Và sâu xa hơn, đó là tâm không bị chi phối, trí không bị mê hoặc, và hạnh nguyện không bị bóp méo bởi dục vọng hay hoàn cảnh.
Đức Phật dạy rằng: “Không phải bởi sinh làm người quý tộc mà trở thành cao quý. Mà chính là do hành vi, do tâm hạnh – con người ấy có tự tại trong chánh niệm và trí tuệ – đó mới là bậc thượng nhân.”
Cũng vậy, người Huynh trưởng không cao quý bởi cấp bậc hay vị trí trong hàng ngũ, mà bởi tâm lực tinh tấn, bởi sự độc lập với những ràng buộc thế tục, và khả năng gìn giữ lý tưởng Lam giữa cơn sóng dữ cuộc đời.
Anh chị em thương quý,
Chúng ta đang sống trong một thế giới mà tự do thường bị đánh đồng với chọn lựa cá nhân, hưởng thụ không giới hạn, và sự từ chối mọi ràng buộc. Nhưng tự do đích thực, theo tinh thần Phật giáo, là một phẩm chất tâm linh được tôi luyện bằng Giới – Định – Tuệ. Là khi ta biết chọn việc đúng mà không cần ép buộc. Là khi ta chọn hy sinh mà không cần ai vinh danh. Là khi ta dám buông bỏ bản ngã để sống vì đại nguyện lớn hơn chính mình.
Người Huynh trưởng áo Lam, vì vậy, vừa là người tổ chức sinh hoạt, hướng dẫn đoàn sinh, hay giữ kỷ cương đạo tràng. Vừa là một hành giả – đang tu trong đời, đang tinh tấn vượt thoát những buộc ràng của tham – sân – si, đang nỗ lực giữ vững trái tim tự do giữa những thử thách rất thật của cuộc sống: cơm áo, thời gian, bất đồng, thị phi.
Ngày hôm nay, khi khắp nơi nhộn nhịp tiếng nhạc mừng Quốc Khánh, chúng ta – những người con Phật sống giữa lòng nước Mỹ – hãy dành một phút thầm lặng để tự hỏi chính mình:
- Mình có đang tự do khỏi sự biếng nhát, khỏi tính buông xuôi?
- Mình có đang tự chủ trong quyết định tu học, trong cách đối đãi với tổ chức, với anh chị em?
- Mình có đang độc lập khỏi những ảo tưởng về danh phận, để thật sự phụng sự với tất cả tình thương?
…
Nếu một quốc gia cần bản Tuyên Ngôn Độc Lập để tự xác định mình giữa thế giới, thì người Huynh trưởng cũng cần có một tuyên ngôn nội tâm: “Tôi nguyện sống đời tinh tấn, hành xử bằng từ bi và trí tuệ, không để phiền não dắt dẫn tâm hành. Tôi nguyện tự do khỏi ngã chấp, để đồng hành cùng đàn em trên con đường Phật pháp.”
Đó là một lời nguyện không cần ghi trên giấy, nhưng phải khắc trong lòng. Và phải được thực hiện từng ngày, trong từng buổi sinh hoạt, từng buổi họp, từng lần khó khăn xảy đến.
Anh chị em thân thương,
Tự do không đến từ bên ngoài. Mà đến từ nội lực được tôi luyện trong tinh tấn.
Độc lập không phải là đứng một mình, mà là đứng vững trên lý tưởng mình đã chọn.
Và người Huynh trưởng – nếu biết tu tập theo tinh thần ấy – chính là một hiện thân của Đạo giữa đời, là một biểu tượng tự do nội tâm nêu cao âm thầm nhưng mạnh mẽ trong lòng tổ chức.
Nhân ngày 4 tháng 7, 2025, kính chúc toàn thể anh chị em, từ cấp Tập đến cấp Dũng, từ thành viên mới đến những Trưởng cao niên, luôn vững chãi như ngọn núi giữa giông bão, tự do như bầu trời không ngằn mé, và tinh tấn như ngọn lửa chưa từng lịm tắt trong tim người phụng sự.

Dear beloved Lam-colored brothers and sisters,
Today, here in the United States—the land where we live, study, and serve together—is a day of great national celebration: Independence Day. It commemorates the origin of a people’s yearning for liberty and self-determination, and marks the beginning of a journey to establish a nation where every person has the right to pursue happiness in their own way.
Yet for us, the wearers of the Lam-colored shirt, Independence Day is not merely a time for fireworks, flags, and stirring speeches. It is also a moment to quietly return to a foundational question:
What is true independence?
And how can a GĐPT Leader, in this age of upheaval, live and serve as a truly free person?
In the Buddha’s teachings, independence is not only a political state of being free from control. More profoundly, it is the inner state where the mind is unshaken by circumstances, the intellect is not deceived by delusion, and one’s vows and aspirations are not distorted by desire or fear.
The Buddha taught:
“One is not noble because of birth into a noble caste, but by action and virtue. The one who lives in mindfulness and wisdom, self-mastered and free, that is the true noble one.”
Likewise, a GĐPT Leader is not noble because of rank or position, but through the strength of their diligent heart, their spiritual independence from worldly entanglements, and their ability to uphold the Lam ideal amid life’s crashing waves.
Dear brothers and sisters,
We live in an age where freedom is often confused with limitless personal choice, indulgence, and the rejection of all boundaries. But true freedom, in the Buddhist sense, is a spiritual quality forged through Sīla – Samādhi – Prajñā (Morality – Concentration – Wisdom). It is the ability to choose the right without coercion, to sacrifice without seeking praise, and to let go of ego in service of a vow greater than oneself.
A GĐPT Leader is not only an organizer of activities, a guide to younger members, or a guardian of order in the Dharma space. They are also a practitioner in the world, diligently overcoming the bonds of greed – hatred – delusion, striving to keep their inner freedom alive amidst real-life challenges: daily survival, time constraints, disagreements, and social criticism.
And so today, while music and celebration echo across the land, we—children of the Buddha living in America—are invited to pause for a moment and silently ask ourselves:
- Am I truly free from laziness, from resignation?
- Am I self-directed in my practice, in how I relate to the Sangha, to my fellow leaders and companions?
- Am I independent of illusions about position or reputation, so I may serve with pure compassion?
If a nation requires a Declaration of Independence to define itself among the world, then a GĐPT Leader, too, needs a Declaration of Inner Resolve:
“I vow to live a life of diligence, to act with compassion and wisdom,
not allowing afflictions to dictate my path.
I vow to be free from ego-clinging,
so I may walk alongside the next generation on the Dharma path.”
This vow need not be written on paper,
but engraved in the heart,
and renewed each day—in every meeting, every training session, every challenge.
Beloved companions,
Freedom does not come from outside. It arises from an inner strength forged through perseverance.
Independence is not about standing alone, but standing firm in the ideals we have chosen.
And the GĐPT Leader—if they truly practice in this spirit—becomes a manifestation of the Dharma in daily life,
a quiet but powerful beacon of spiritual freedom within the heart of the organization.
On this Fourth of July, 2025, I respectfully send my deepest wishes to all of you—
from Tập-level to Dũng-level,
from the newest members to our most senior leaders—
that you may be as steadfast as a mountain in storm,
as free as the boundless sky,
and as diligent as the flame that never dies
in the heart of one who serves.
