Northern California GĐPT Tradition Day
Unity Already Lives in the Shared Spirit and Activities of GĐPT
For many years, the question of “unification” between the two Central Guiding Boards of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association (GĐPTVN) in the United States has been a matter of concern for many GĐPT leaders. Since the 2004 convention, numerous efforts have been made through bodies such as the Coordinating Committee and the Unification Study Committee, along with meetings, conferences, and dialogues seeking a common organizational structure. These are worthy efforts, born of a sincere commitment to preserving and strengthening our shared GĐPT family.
Yet, following the Tradition Day celebrations held in Northern California, perhaps we should pause and ask ourselves: Could what we have been seeking all these years already be here?
Tradition Day of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association is much like an ancestral memorial gathering in an extended family. It carries forward a cherished Vietnamese cultural tradition in which younger generations honor their roots, their ancestors, and those who devoted their lives to building the family’s moral and spiritual legacy. On this day, members, youth, and leaders return from many places to their shared home. Together, they offer incense with heartfelt devotion, arrange fresh flowers, light lamps of gratitude, and make offerings in remembrance. After the solemn ceremonies, everyone gathers to recall the virtue, service, sacrifices, and contributions of earlier generations to the organization and society.
These stories serve more than remembrance. They pass a precious spiritual legacy on to future generations: lessons in gratitude and in the responsibility to uphold and enrich the values nurtured by those who came before us. Gratitude is expressed not only through words or memorial ceremonies, but also by carrying forward their aspirations through better, more meaningful deeds—honoring those who have passed and bringing credit to the organization’s traditions. Tradition Day is therefore more than a celebration. It is a return to our roots, reminding each of us where we come from and how we should live to be worthy of those who opened the way.
A Beautiful Sunday, and an Even More Beautiful Sight
On a sunny Sunday, in the peaceful surroundings of Micke Grove Regional Park in Lodi, California, nine GĐPT chapters from the Liễu Quán and Thiên Minh regions—Thiện Tâm, Anoma, Huyền Không, Chánh Tâm, Chánh Hạnh, Chánh Hòa, Thiền Tôn, Chánh Đức, and Kim Quang—came together to celebrate GĐPT Tradition Day, despite their affiliations with two different Central Guiding Boards.
More than 250 people attended, including GĐPT leaders, youth members, parents, former leaders from the Huệ Năng fellowship and the Tâm Chánh and Hồng Liên groups, and guests. Especially meaningful was the presence of twelve venerable Buddhist monastics, who offered their spiritual support and remained throughout the program. Among them were Senior Venerable Nun Thích nữ Đồng Kính and Venerable Thích Từ Lực, both with roots in GĐPT, whose love, guidance, and care have long sustained the organization. This turnout reflected more than the success of a single gathering. It revealed something greater: the enduring bonds and shared identity of GĐPT.
When the whistle sounded for assembly, the first thing everyone could readily see was the complete coordination of the ranks.
From the calls:
“Buddhists—Be ready!”
“Buddhists—Be diligent!”
to the auspicious hand gesture used in the GĐPT salute, everyone responded with the same solemnity, familiarity, and precision.
When Sen Trắng (White Lotus), the GĐPT anthem, began, its familiar words rang out, gentle yet powerful. No one needed to distinguish which chapter belonged to which guiding board or organizational body. Everyone sang in the same rhythm, breathed together, and shared the same ideal.
The solemn spiritual atmosphere became even more apparent during the incense offering ceremony. Wisps of incense rose before the seats of the venerable monastics and drifted throughout the assembly. Leaders and youth members, elders and young children alike, turned wholeheartedly toward the Three Jewels. Together, they recited the name of Śākyamuni Buddha, the Repentance Liturgy for the Six Periods of the Day, and the Four Great Vows. They also read the names of recently departed GĐPT leaders in prayers for rebirth in the Pure Land and joined in the dedication of merit.
If ritual is the soul of the organization, then that soul clearly remains whole and indivisible.
This unity was evident not only in the ceremonies, but also in every activity throughout the day. Games were lively. Activity booths drew enthusiastic groups of youth members. The GĐPT band performed familiar songs. Displays celebrating the organization’s heritage vividly reflected its distinctive identity.
Together, these activities created an atmosphere that anyone who has worn the gray GĐPT uniform would recognize immediately. No one asked which organization the person beside them belonged to. No one drew distinctions based on neckerchiefs, organizational backgrounds, or administrative affiliations.
What everyone saw were the familiar faces of GĐPT leaders and youth members, united by the ideals of Compassion, Wisdom, and Courage. That was the most precious thing of all.
A Hundred Rivers Flow into One Ocean
Buddhist teachings offer a beautiful image: Rivers and streams may arise from many different sources, but they eventually flow into one great ocean. There, the waters lose their separate identities and share the single salty taste of the sea.
The same can be said of GĐPT.
Differences may exist in administrative structures, names, or organizational models. But when we return to our purpose of educating children and young people in the spirit of Buddhism; when we preserve our shared traditions, practice the same ceremonies, sing the same White Lotus anthem, and make the same vow to serve the Three Jewels, we meet at the very heart of who we are.
That is genuine unity: a unity that does not require a formal document to proclaim it or a resolution to confirm it. It is expressed through our actions, our shared activities, and the bonds of affection among those who wear the gray uniform.
For many years, we have devoted considerable time and effort to seeking unification.
Yet, looking at what unfolded during this Tradition Day celebration, we can confidently say that unity already lives in the daily life of GĐPT. It is present in our shared ceremonies, traditions, ideals, and bonds of fellowship—and, above all, in the hearts of our members.
The question before us today, therefore, is no longer how to achieve unity, but how to cherish, nurture, and strengthen the unity that already exists.
Tradition Day in Northern California was more than an annual gathering. It was living evidence that the spirit of GĐPT continues to bring us together and allows us to function as one body.
If we look only at outward forms, we may see different organizational names. But if we look with the understanding of Buddhist practitioners, we will recognize a clear reality:
GĐPT has never lost its unity in tradition, ritual, ideals, or the bonds of affection that hold its members together.
Rather than continuing to search so hard for what is already here, perhaps we should join in preserving, nurturing, and developing these shared values. As the Buddha’s teaching reminds us, rivers may begin in different places, but all eventually flow into the ocean. For those who wear the gray GĐPT uniform, that ocean is the ideal of serving the Dharma and the Vietnamese people in the inseparable spirit of Compassion, Wisdom, and Courage.
